[New Years Eve Party] Kisses At Midnight

Slowly Maurice Wultz took the stage in dramatic style after the singers and himself had taken a break to eat and several guests had taken the stage to perform. All in all the night was going well and the party was slowly beginning to wind down. Some of the security had taken turns on the dance floor and even the caterers were slightly inebriated at this point. No one minded if dancers had two left feet, and everyone was certainly pretty. Some costumes had held up well throughout the night, some had began to fail... but all was taken in good spirits.

However, there was one last thing Maurice wanted to say. He stepped forward and addressed the crowd from the stage. "It's a tradition world wide to steal or share a kiss at Midnight. This is Cheva's realm and her desire. It blesses relationships for the year to come. It renews hope and spreads love. There is no better way to start a New Year than beginning with love. There is no way to end an old year... than ending it with love. So if you are masked, its time to unmask. In many traditions, we mask ourselves to scare off evil spirits and unmask to invite good spirits back in. That is not the case in Sunberth. We mask for the anonymous nature of being. But the one thing you don't want to be anonymous is during a rite older than time to invite good fortune into your life. You want that fortune to recognize you and follow you everywhere." He said, his voice rich and sincere. His cheeks were slightly flushed and one could tell he'd had more than one drink himself.

"And if you opt out, please understand.. its opening yourself to heartache, loss, loneliness, and isolation for the whole of the year to come. So kiss away. Kiss every Gods cursed woman in this place! Life is short. We need all the joy we can get out of it!" He said with a fist pump. Then he launched into his traditional blessing poem for the New Year.

"Another year is coming to a close.
We can forget our troubles and woes.

For me, this year was tough.
It brought many emotions, was tearful and rough.

Now another year is approaching fast.
Let's hope it's a New Year with love and health; let's hope it's a blast.

May all of your dreams come true
And you find peace and love in all that you do.

May this world know the gentle sound of a hush.
May it calm all its anger and slow its pace from the rush.

May we all hear the sound of joy
And push away all that hurts that destroy.

The New Year I hope will be good to us all.
Care and calm, a helping hand when we fall.

Listen more, slow down, and say I love you.
Stop for a moment; take a breath, take in the view.

Appreciate your family; tell them you care.
Do something exciting, a thrill or a dare.

Enjoy all that the New Year may give.
We have but one life, so let's learn to live.

It's a New Year, a brand new start.
Always remember, live and love from your heart.

Wishing each and every one a year to behold,
And may it be full of wonders for you to unfold.

Love, hugs, and kisses too...
A very happy New Year from me to you."

He finished his speech with a flourish and exited stage right to wade into the crowd. Maurice found himself a lovely girl, a barmaid from The Drunken Fish, and took her hand. She grinned thoughtfully and bowed to him. Then together, in a booming voice, Maurice held up a chunk of Watchstone which had been suspended around his neck in the form of a pendant. It's color was already changing, wavering, as he started his countdown.

"Ten! Nine! Eight! Seven!....." The crowd joined him in the countdown, couples pairing up two by two... and sometimes even more. Even little kids that had gotten in due to their costumes paired up. Everyone signaled the countdown, and the whole party crowed chanted as one.

OOC :
Everyone grab a partner! Its time to kiss at midnight!

Despite his anxieties, and tendencies to avoid social environments, Kynier was glad that he had come. The last day of winter was coming to an end and it had been done in good spirits. Tasty food filled his belly and the energy of the bards and musicians had compelled his feet to dance. As the last song came to an end a hush spread over the crowd. Kynier looked up to the stage as Maurice addressed everyone. Slightly out of breath with the underside of his mask lined in sweat, Kynier listened to Maurice’s words about the year-end traditions.

Kynier gazed around at the crowd, considering the purposes behind having the masked event. It had been a splendid idea, he decided. Everyone was able to enjoy themselves without the fear of seeing an enemy, or anyone they had sought to avoid. Universal anonymity had granted everyone a freedom to enjoy themselves. And those with the Sunberthain spirit wouldn’t have had it any other way. But at the words of unmasking and kissing, Kynier felt himself flush and cast a weary glance around. Such affections to be shared with a stranger were not in his comfort zone.

The sight of the Watchstone took his attention as others sought to find someone to pair with for the moment of transition. Rather than search for a stranger to embrace, he held his hands behind his back and chose to watch the color change. The crowd united in the count down. Even Kynier found himself saying the numbers, though not at the top of his lungs like some of those around him. “Eight… Seven… Six…”

It was then the sensation struck him. A tickle in the back of his mind that compelled him to turn. He had been perfectly content to remained masked and risk the coming year to be full of heartache. Previous years had begun the same way and he had survived well enough. Yet, as he turned to find the source of that sensation, one woman in the crowd stood out to him. Hazel eyes beneath the mask covered in multicolored glass plates stared at the woman. “Five…” Kynier took a step towards her…

The tall man in the bird skull mask stepped up to her and touched her shoulder gently to get Kelski’s attention. She turned, catching his eyes with her silver gaze and smiled. The musicians were winding down and the party was slowly drawing to a close. It was almost the first of spring, the anniversary of the Valterrian, and something even more important to the Kelvic. “Are you having a good time?” She asked Gilthas as he pushed his mask back off his face as Maurice bid the crowd to do. Kelski would have done so as well, but her costume did not include one. The scales delicately affixed to her face with jeweler’s adhesive gave her an air of delicate alien beauty and she didn’t feel like her normal predatory self. So instead, she turned to face him.

He smiled. “It’s truly a lovely party. You had a good turnout.” The Mage said, pulling something from a pocket of his robe. He held it out to her.

Kelski glanced down to look at what Gilthas had in his hand, and here delicate white eyebrows rose. “What is this?” She asked curiously.

“I doubt you’ve ever been given one, so its long past overdue. Did you think I didn’t know?” He asked simply, his face soft though with an underlying tenseness that would lead someone to believe he wasn’t as relaxed as he seemed and was indeed prepared for a fight.

Kelski started to protest, then closed her moth into a thin line and looked up at him again. She reached out and let him set what was in his hand into her palm. She glanced down at it, turning it over and over in her hands. It looked like a bundle of silk, a small delicate roll of it. It was tied with a bright silk ribbon. The Sea Eagle delicately pulled the bow loose and let the silk unfurl in her hands. Her face formed an ‘o’ and she ran the length of the beautiful silk scarf through her hands, turning it over and over. It was a slash of crimson against her white and purple and black costume. Ombre like her normal hair, the scarf contained all the colors of coals heating… reds, blacks, oranges and bright yellows. The dying was so delicate it looked indeed like embers. And when the material moved, it rippled like heat through coals. Kelski brought it up to her cheek and touched it against her skin, her eyes tearing up.

“How did you know?” She asked simply, barely a whisper which was almost lost above the crowd.

“I’m a horrible old snoop and I once saw a memory of a girl wearing a slaves collar without a single coin in her pocket see a scarf exactly like this and covet it for its beauty…. Because it reminded her of the flames of her forge.” He said simply. “I paid attention, went back and found the vender, described the scarf to her, and she dyed another just like it for you.” He said simply.

Gilthas knew when to make things awkward and then when to retreat. So, he reached forward and kissed her on the top of her head. His smile was infectious. “Happy Birthday, Kelski. I hope you enjoyed the party you threw for yourself as much as the rest of us did. Next year, we’ll throw you one instead.” The Mage said to his Learner as his learner stood there dumbfounded, turning the beautiful scarf over and over again in her hands.

“Thank you…” She finally stammered, not sure what else to say. Her eyes were tear-bright and he could tell he had touched her deeply with his gesture.

“Now, it looks like the Master Bard is doing a countdown. There’s a pretty little singer in the Slag Heap Singers I’ve had my eye on…” Gilthas said with a twinkle in his eye. Then he made a show of looking around as if to spot the woman. That was when he glanced over her shoulder and spotted the other mage approaching. He caught Kynier’s eyes, his own full of the sort of warning a man would give someone about to take his daughter on a date. They were half threat half promise of the likes of ‘have her home by the 22nd bell, show her a good time; but not too good of a time’. Before he turned and disappeared into the crowd.

Kelski turned to see whom Gilthas was looking at and spotted Kynier. The entire crowd was counting down. And because the Kelvic hadn’t been paying attention to the last part, she wasn’t sure why they were counting down. “5,4…” She took a step towards Kynier, smiled once more at his costume, and said… “What happens when they hit 1?” She asked, glancing up at the stage in time to see the watchstone flicker colors. She looked back at Kynier, a bright red smoldering scarf twisting nervously in her hands.

[New Years Eve Party] Kisses At Midnight

At the start of the evening, Duncan struggled with the festive atmosphere. It wasn't shyness as much as it was simply feeling awkward. Lia had thankfully designed his costume with flexibility and ease of movement in mind yet he found himself moving stiffly. He knew nothing of dancing and tripped over his own feet more than once. He couldn't sing to save his life and he couldn't think of any real talents to put on display like so many others were. Despite all of that, as the night progressed, Duncan began to enjoy himself.

His enjoyment came in the form of the time he was spending with Lia. In all the ways Duncan felt awkward, she was the opposite. She was outgoing, lively and not surprising, moved with the grace of a cat. She laughed, danced and sang. Her joy was infectious and as the night was drawing to an end, Duncan had all but forgot about his uncertainty and difficulty assimilating the celebration around him.

As Maurice gave his speech, Duncan found it difficult to keep his attention off of Lia. Her silly costume and the way she played it up brought a smile to his face. He felt almost weightless when he looked at her; tingling starting at the tips of his toes and tickling its way up his legs, through his torso, down his arms to his fingers and up to the top of his head. Whenever he made eye contact with her, he felt his face flush. Whenever they danced, her scent, the touch of her skin; Duncan wanted to surround himself with the strange feelings that he experienced.

Duncan and Lia stood side by side as Maurice stepped aside and everyone began shouting the countdown. Lia was caught up in the countdown although Duncan was thinking about something else.

10

Duncan reached up and removed his mask.

9

He swallowed a lump that had formed in his throat.

8

He felt his face flush heavily.

7

The palm of his flesh hand was sweating.

6

He looked at Lia who in turn was dancing in place and yelling the countdown.

5

"Ok, you can do this." He thought to himself although some uncertainty remained.

4

He almost second-guessed himself; doubt tickling his mind. "What if I'm just imagining a connection? What if we are just good friends?"

3

As quickly as the doubt emerged, something deep inside him crushed it completely.

2

He reached out and took Lia's hand gently in his metallic one and pulled her to him. She looked at him with surprise; her eyes meeting his and her smile growing impossibly wide.

1

Duncan smiled and kissed Lia as the watchstone in Maurice's hand changed color. The kiss started soft but quickly became something much more. The feelings he was having for Lia instantly flared to life with an intensity that could have been overwhelming if Duncan hadn't embraced them so fully. For Lia, the feeling was exactly the same. She wrapped her arms around him just as he did her and they held each other close. As their lips remained locked together, both could physically feel the love they had for each other. The joy that washed over them was shared on a deeply personal level. There was a need for each other that transcended normal attachment.

With that kiss on the changing of one year to another, Lia and Duncan became bonded.

Even if she had worn a mask, he would’ve been able to pick the Sea Eagle out in the crowd. It was not because of the brilliant silver hue that she had somehow given her hair, nor the scales that adorned her exposed skin. It was the familiarity of her form, her movements, and the indistinguishable silver eyes. Despite what had happened, there was still that connection. One that Kynier had tried to ignore. Perhaps it was the foolish dancing that lifted his spirits, or the indulgent amount of spiced cider that made him feel more comfortable in his own skin. But tonight, he could not bring himself to ignore it anymore.

There was an instant of hesitation in his stride during his approach. Another man, an Ethaefel, was standing with her and exchanging words. Whoever he was, he appeared to look on her with affection until his gaze came up and met the sorcerer’s. Kynier had never seen the man before, yet it appeared as though the man somehow knew him based off the look in his eyes. Kynier was about to turn away, forget the notion, when the Ethaefel moved away first. When Kelski turned to see him, a smile subconsciously pulled at the corner of his mouth.

People refer to is as tunnel vision, but the description was too narrow to really explain it. Yes, his eyes were transfixed by hers the moment they came to him, but the voices of those around him became more distant as well. The world beyond the two of them continued to exist, but as nothing more than an acknowledgement. Feet moved down the path that formed between them, unobscured by anyone else, to stand by her. “4…”

Taking his place before her, Kynier pulled the scintillating mask over his head without pulling his eyes away from her. They flicked down quickly to see the ember and coal colored scarf coiling and uncoiling around her hands and fingers. Her question brought his eyes back up to stare into the endless depths of her own. “We… uh…” he muttered while taking a half step closer as she looked at the stone.

“3…” The smallest corner of his mind cried out that this was an unwise action. That he was only subjecting himself to more pain. It was a neglected cry. For selfishly, he wanted this moment to remember what it was like. To remember what it meant to not be afraid, and to… have something so precious that could not be stolen by even Yshul. “We kiss,” he said with greater confidence.

“2…” Kynier reached out with a hand to gently curl around the back of her neck at the base of her skull. Tender were his movements, yet with a strength meant to ensnare the Kelvic. Not to prevent escape, but to shelter and hold. His body came closer, to the point that his other hand only needed to move a few inches from his side to place itself on her hip. “1…”

Kynier closed his eyes as he set his lips upon hers, gently pulled her into him with his hands. The taste of her was sweet on his lips. He exhaled a sudden long breath as the tension flooded out of his body. The hand on her hip moved up to the center of her back as he invaded her space more. It was more than the simple kiss for good fortune in the new year. It was an end to withdrawal that afflicted more than his body. It felt like a kiss that would never come to an end, lasting longer than most than those around them had experienced. A terribly delicious release of worries and sorrows replaced by a sense of belonging. Belonging, and… a feeling of completion. The discovery of a missing piece that made the larger whole better than it was before.

Pulling his lips away from hers at the end felt like his breast plate had shattered. A feeling of pins and needles prickling his chest as the addiction to her affections reignited within. His forehead rested against hers as he took a desperate breath, eyes closed. The hand on her back fell to softly cup her side while the other rested on her shoulder. There was a powerful craving to steal another from the Kelvic, but he kept himself in place; just short of the strength he needed to walk away. Never did he want to let go, yet he knew he could not hold on. Gods damn me. Why must it hurt to love?

Opening his eyes, he took a deep inhale and pulled his head away from hers. Fragments of pain and pleasure resting behind his hazel gaze as he looked upon her. He did not see the silver-maned, scaled covered wonder that stood before him, but the real, more marvelous her behind the costume. For a moment he stared, basking in the joy of being this close once more. Sad about knowing that it had to end, but not right now. “Happy New Year," he whispered with a soft smile.
