[The Sanctuary] Sanctuary Means Survival

A battered herd of horses and three survivors return after a Zith Attack

Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

Continued from here.

The herd spilled through the Sea gates smelling of blood and fear and missing a few members. The lead stallion was burdened down with not only one rider but two. Vanator was wounded but by far in better shape than the Myrian who also rode with them on one of Kavala's seme mares. A bloodbane came in last, limping badly, her shoulder and flanks cut up. The strider Vanator originally rode was also in bad shape, her flanks and rump laid open. Kavala was sprawled across Vanator's lap, unconscious, held aloft on the big stallion by her brother's strong arm.

The Gates thankfully were unlocked, though one of them could easily remedy that as soon as the cavern was full of horses and bleeding people. Help was scattered throughout the cliff fortress, simply not knowing the emergency below. Had Kavala been awake and conscious, she'd have realized the cavern needed some sort of gong or bell to alert others that people were needed below.

Night was falling fast, as it was almost totally dark by the time the Sea Gates were closed. An urgency and restlessness filled the horses in the cavern. There was a thump on the Sea Gates. It was gentle at first, then harder and more violent against the stone doors, echoing through the Cavern.

The refugees had come home. But they'd brought the enemy on their heels.

"Is not over."

Razkar knew the second he heard the pounding on those stone doors that their fight was not over. They were lucky to get this far, wounded and retreating, the setting sun darkening the world little by little with each passing chime, giving the night to their enemy. Now they were inside some cavern, lined with feeding troughs, stalagmites growing out of the ceilings and a pool of water bubbling up in one corner.

The Myrian growled, heaving his leg over the flank of the house he'd been riding.

Makes no difference. Blood is blood, wherever it's spilled.

But the second his feet hit the sandy ground and a volt of pain shot through his body, he was reminded of the cold reality of their situation. His right leg was still on fire, fracture no better than when he first hauled himself onto the horse back in that blood- and body-strewn clearing. The cuts and slashes littering his body were mostly healed, but he'd still lost blood.

The female was unconscious. Her big friend was wounded. They were three against what sounded like an army, hammering on the stone gates louder and louder with each vibration. The horses huddled in a corner of the torch-lit cavern, sensing better than they the danger that lay beyond their sanctuary.

Razkar braced himself against the mare, gritting his teeth so hard he thought he might never open his mouth again. Think. Focus. Block it out. Block it or when then door opens - and they will - you will all die here.

His hands left the mare and went down to his belt. Ax and gladius greeted them. His bow was across his back, but... fourteen left from his quiver of twenty. He was armed. He had his weapons, he was...

He was staggering. His leg was next to useless beneath him and he felt himself sink down to the cold sand while winged monster screeched and scratched and battered entry at the gates.

He would not allow this.

"Hey! Hey!" He shouted, trying to get the attention of the two humans. "Need heal leg! Not much tim-"

The final word is drowned out as an almighty impact hammers onto the gates, stone blocks the size of carts pushed inwards for a moment like they weighed nothing. Razkar drew his weapons, baring his teeth and glaring at them.

"Need heal now!"

More than anything, it was the huge stallion and the draft mare that got them and the herd back to Sanctuary. They headed directly for the huge cave, large enough to hold all of them with some security. Vanator was sure the Zith would be back. They knew the three of them were severely wounded, time would only make them weaker, and the herd would be easy pickings. Unfortunately, a herd of horses, with many of them bleeding, left an easy trail to follow.

As soon as they made it inside, Van slide from the great horse's back, Kavala in his arms. Like Razkar, his landing was painful as every slash and laceration of his flesh was jarred. He moved to one side of the cave, near the freshwater pool, and laid Kavala gently in the sand. A large bruise had already colored her head where he had been forced to hit her.

Van ran to the gates, throwing his shoulder against the and locking them as the stranger again readied his already blooded weapons. The savage was injured badly in the leg. "I am going to call others, they can help." Vanator moved through the milling horsed to the tunnel entrance, running several yards down.

"We are under attack, we need everyone!" He bellowed down the tunnel, a forceful roar that felt like it ripped the flesh of his throat. "Kavala is hurt!" Hopefully that would bring the other staff urgently and ready.

The Drykas, the chopping ax still in his hand, half-ran, half-staggered back into the cave. His shirt was no more than blood soaked tatters, deep gashes ran across his shoulders and back. Vanator looked over at the heart-eating warrior with grim resolve. He gestured with his head towards the gates, the pounding on the other side waxing louder. The horseman leaned his shredded shoulder against the door, his feet digging in to act as a human brace. He nodded to Razhar to do the same, maybe they could buy some time until others arrived.

Razkar hated the feeling of being beholden to anyone, but the pragmatist in him knew that unless the healing woman woke up soon, they were doomed.

But he wasn't dead yet.

The human male braced himself against one of the stone gates, broad back to it, digging his heels into the sand. Razkar saw each blow send vibrations travelling up and down his body, but the man gritted his teeth and bore it, ax in one hand.

Would he allow a human to act thus, and him prostate on the ground?

Razkar howled in pain as he hauled himself to his feel, split bone grinding against split bone as he did. But upright he soon was, sweat lathering his face, tottering and staggering and doing a bizarre running hop until he slammed the right side of his body into the other stone door.

He turned slowly, agonizingly, until his back was flush against the stone, then dug in his good heel-

BOOM!

-and the impact of the next pounding nearly knocked him clear off his feet. He could hear them now, so clearly and so close. Dozens of claws on stone, talons on sand, screeching and growling from more throats than he could make out. It was like trying to discern one bee from a swarm of hundreds. And all of them pushing, pounding, hammering, screeching for blood and vengeance.

Razkar grinned through his pain and locked his good leg in position. Buy time for the woman. He gripped his hand ax tightly, and turned to Vanator.

"Need heal. Leg... petched." But the smile didn't face, and he even managed a throaty, gurgling chuckle. "But good when gate open."

He touched the gladius to his forehead, cool steel like a glass of water after a week in the parching desert. Reassuring and strong and solid.

And eager.

[The Sanctuary] Sanctuary Means Survival

Postby Elem Bree on October 25th, 2012, 6:06 am

Elem had just returned from his magical evening with I'sona, learning of the beauty of the deep and learning some of the Charoda's native tongue along the way. He recalled as he made his way toward the within that there was a strange keening sound in the air. He had never heard it before, thinking it to be a murder of crows or something similar. One could never tell out in these wild, untamed lands.

He had kicked his shoes off and was making melodic whistling and chirping sounds in the cavernous confines of his room. "Hello. I am Elem Bree!" He found the trill of Bree especially exciting and began to repeat it like some kind of mad bird. "Bree! Bree! Bree!" Quite pleased with himself, he soon removed his jacket and shirt, his golden medallion of the Society remaining around his neck, as usual. A nice bath would surely end the evening well, Elem thought to himself as he made his way down the short hall to the Bath. Perhaps he would even attempt some Char beneath the warm waters, to hear its sounds in its natural environment. An exciting endeavor.

The bath was amazing, another extraordinary creation in this extraordinary place. The stone beneath the water was a natural blue of some sort, making the water seem even more blue and pure than what could be natural. A curious and delighted eyebrow raised as his foot broke the water's surface. It would be so nice indeed. It almost reminded him of the majesty of the ocean floor behind the glass at the Gem. Almost.

A hideous echo of screams broke the spell of beauty in an instant. It sounded like...horses? Screaming? A voice could be heard shouting, a heavy tone Elem did not recognize. As he wandered int othe tunnel outside the bath, he soon heard the doors of the Sea Gates slamming closed. Then he heard the cacophony of violence that threatened to break down those same great doors. "What in Dira's Din?", was all Elem had to offer, his bare steps treading down the hallway of the tunnel that connected the Bath to the Cave.

Then it was Vanator's booming voice that put those light and cautious steps into a quicker pace. All Elem could think of when he emerged into the cave wearing only a pair of pants and a medallion were Serrif's words during their run.

"Demons are dismissable."

He would need that mantra for a solid week at least at the carnage he saw. His medical mind immediately took over, his body moving without word or warning to the emergency kits Kavala had shown him during his stay at the Sanctuary. Prewritten scrolls and emergency supplies in a cask were quickly broken into, his eyes surveying the trio of warriors and the horses. His mind, in fact, cooled and calmed, becoming an astute tool of assessment. Bandages were already being unraveled and ripped as he motioned to Vanator and approached the other man. Kavala was unconscious from a head wound, but the two men standing were currently the only defense against whatever hammered the doors.

Without so much as a look at the blood soaked savage, Elem wrapped his thigh tight above the obvious fracture. "Hold it still!"Rolling the cask over, his fingers flipped through the scrolls. Bonebreak. Opening the scroll, as if he had done it a hundred times as opposed to the never, he pointed the focus of the scroll at the area, ignoring any words of the man he treated, his free handsliding over the exposed flesh, his Mother's words preparing the wound, freeing it of disease or infection. "HEAL!, Elem exclaimed, the trigger touched and the barrier broken. A light flashed from the scroll into the man's thigh muscles. That would have to do. A vial of white powder was quickly produced after, its label of Stimulant apparent to Elem as he handed it to the killer. "Eat it now. Stand!"

Without a thought he quickly moved to Vanator, his hands aglow at once against the angry tears in the Drykas' back, the wounds sanitizing and closing as another vial was handed to him. "Eat it!I must attend to Kavala!" Now it was the otherwise flamboyant human who barked the commands as in this situation, he was the commander. Dropping to his knees, Elem surveyed the compound fracture in Kavala's leg. He had seen similar sights in Zeltiva, when dock timber rolled through the streets like matchsticks. "Thank Blessed Rak'keli you are asleep, Kavala." His eyes fluttered closed, his attention gone from the two fighters at his rear.

Elem's voice cleared and became quiet.

"Great Mother Rak'keli, guide my hands and my heart as I aid Your daughter in regaining her legs and her life. It is Your hand that works through me. In Your Grace, I beseech You." Taking a deep breath, Elem felt along the muscles of Kavala's scaled thigh, finding the proper end of the bone. Bandages were wound tight above the thigh, slowing the blood flow. he trusted his Mother fully. She had saved the man at the Ball, she would now save Kavala. Elem would save Kavala. Pulling the flesh of her rubbery thigh over and around the bone, another scroll was already being opened with teeth, the paper laid over the wound. Before it could steep with blood, the Bonebreak scroll was activatd with another shrill cry from the Zeltivan. However, he had to quicklly hold the leg in place beneath the muscle tissue, gripping her thigh in a fashion akin to baby bear high in a tree.

With a flash, the leg seemed joined. Further glow of his hand slid over the puncture, his words of prayer for its cleanliness uttered over and over in whispers over his mentor. Another scroll, perhaps too powerful but sounding fitting was activated. It simply said, 'Grievous Wound'. It seemed applicableso Elem used it, the leg sealing with the flash of light. His hands continued to move over her body in a fashion that in any other situation might seem inappropriate, the energy of Rak'keli pulsing through the Favored. One more scroll was fingered and opened.

Head Trauma.

Elem was on a roll but took great pains to use the water source to bathe her scalp, washing the blood from it. He prayed hard for her mind to be steeled and saved from the damage as he uttered the final flash, her pale face illuminated beneath it. Elem could feel a great expenditure in his work coming, but it made little difference to him at the moment, considering the tone. And there were still the horses. He took care to wrap her head and to release the tourniquet from her thigh. "Watch her.I have to tend to the horses." He moved toward them, his Gnosis mark spinning and rolling on his hand as he moved in to calm and heal the frightened creatures..

[The Sanctuary] Sanctuary Means Survival

Postby Serrif Von Chatlyn on October 25th, 2012, 4:08 pm

As usual his door had been propped open so he could hear what was going on around the Sanctuary. Hearing was always a good indicator of what was going on. He heard someone making their way around the Sanctuary rather late, sounded like it was Elem coming in from a meeting of sorts. He heard Rhy and Gianne nocking around. He half expected Rhy to do some kind of stealth sneak up on him just for fun. That girl did have a rather high prey drive at times.

He was at his desk jotting down something he wanted to do for Gianne; he had to keep such things a secret from Rhy because that girl would tell Gianne anything; and one never knew when her mouth would get her in trouble. So he jotted down some things he wanted to check on. A few little things here and there pieces of things and such. His thoughts were sometimes scattered because his mind operated focusing on everything and nothing at the same time. He was winding down, all until he heard a massive ruckus in the below area.

Seemed that the herd was being brought in; but unlike every other night there was a certain degree of chaos added to it. Something was not right here…and in the Sanctuary that usually meant that horrible things were to come. Chaos followed by a sudden call to arms. That was not what he was expecting. Not at all, then the urgency of the situation was followed up with Kavala is injured. With that he felt his stomach drop. He knew he would eventually have to fight for these people. But it seemed it was coming a little sooner than he expected.

Everyone inertly knew their role in what was to come. He ran through the list in his mind. Vanator was already at the gate as was Kavala. That left Gianne, Rhy, Elem, and himself. Elem was no fighter, this much Serrif knew from the morning runs and such they had together. But that was a good thing; because Elem would run likely for the medical supplies first, that meant that the immediate medical needs would be cared for. Leaving him to worry about the coming assault.

“Elem, support now!” Serrif yelled down the hall hoping that spurred Elem on toward action of healing those that were doubtlessly injured.

Hopefully he got the message leaving Serrif to prepare himself for the fray. He had to do so quickly and efficiently. Every second mattered here. It was a good thing that ever since Kavala and him talked about bringing the Cytali back he had all his weaponry in one place by his door. This made slipping on his armor a quick job rather than having to fly around and find it all. His scale mail and breast plate were on the chair by his door as well as his weapon harness that had one of his two daggers fixed to it. The other one was at his bedside on the table, one never knew what they would wake up to in the night.

Quickly in a rushed frenzied hurry Serrif threw on the scale mail leggings on over his long black pants. His boots were already on. So that was one less thing to worry about in this chaotic state. He could hear the doors being banged against from here. This only spurred him on more; the breast plate went on quickly and he then fixed his toothed gauntlets on as well.

”Gianne! Rhy! Ready yourselves!” He said as he threw his weapon harness on and took off down the hallways toward the under area. In his right hand sat his spare dagger, two gladius swords and his bow. On his weapon harness at his left side was a single dagger and on his right thigh was his climbers quiver. It was all tightened down as he continued to run toward where the ruckus was coming from.

About the time he got there Elem was going to get up and tend to the herd. Serrif shook his head. “No, Elem forget them prepare yourself.” He handed the man his spare gladius and dagger that way he had options. “Protect Kavala, horses can be replaced.” He attached his cold steel gladius to his side and then rushed to the gate.

With that said he set his bow down by the pool and headed over to brace himself against the door with the two others. The blows were getting heavier there was no telling how long until they got through. But he had a few more able bodies with him. That would all help in the battle that was to come. “What can we expect?” He said wanting to know what kind of a fight they were in for. It was going to be interesting, there were only four fighting bodies here right now…and he wasn’t sure when others would join them…if they did.

It seemed from the looks of everything that Elem had done all the healing he knew to. But now…now would come the part that Serrif was familiar with. Fighting…something he had been avoiding until now. But there was no getting around it now. He’d have to fight to help protect his Sanctuary family. He was willing to stand with them facing whatever odds were coming against them right now. His job right now wasn’t as a healer alone, it was as a protector.

They likely didn’t have much more time now. His cold steel gladius was in his hand now as he braced himself against the door. He didn’t speak any words, knowing well that they would be brothers in blood today. Even if he didn’t know what kind of odds they were facing now they would face them together.

[The Sanctuary] Sanctuary Means Survival

Postby Razkar on October 25th, 2012, 5:37 pm

Razkar braced himself for the agony he knew would come when the dark-haired newcomer said his chant in Common and the an eerie light rose from the parchment, moving as if with its own mind towards the ugly bruise on his thigh. The tourniquet was bad enough, but if it-

"Dira's krok!"

Bones snapped back into position. Marrow fused together in a split-second of white-hot pain, and then... he was whole. Stunned, the Myrian accepted the vial of powder and understood the rushed words, ripping it open and upending it into his mouth.

He gagged. It tasted like sand but he swallowed every fraction, gulping down whatever it was that had so quickly cured him. And then he did the next part of what was ordered.

He stood. And felt nothing.

Around him there was a chaos of motion. The dark-haired healer ran to the woman, repeating the same chant and motions, then dashed off to the blood-spattered horses. Then another man emerged from a tunnel mouth, this one clad in armor, weapons festooned about his body, barking orders.

Razkar saw but ignored. He tested his legs, found them... strong. Supple. Good as new...

His barked. Then it became a chuckle. And finally laughter, ending in a skyward howl of pure joy.

Restored and ready for another gallon of blood. Praise be to the barbarians for their heathen magics.

Another massive impact and the hinges to the gates screeched and ground against their confines, but the doors held firm. Razkar had to admit, they were well-made. Unless those flying rats out there could wing over a battering ram, they wouldn't be getting through.

Still... just in case they can...

Razkar ripped the bow and quiver off his back, tossing them further from the door. His best use was up close, with ax and gladius, not as an archer, but if there were more allies coming, then one of them could wield his composite bow. He managed to catch the eye of the stern-faced, armored man who emerged, and pointed to the bow with his gladius.

"I fight with gladius." He growled. "At gate. Someone use bow. Not let them get up in air." Now he pointed upwards towards the cavern ceiling. He snarled in bitter memory of how they were so outmaneuvered merely an hour ago, forced on the defensive by creatures who did not need to stand and fight when they could fly and harry. He did not want that repeated. "We hold at gate. Others use bow."

Then he whirled, fresh and bloody scalp whipping around in his hair. The pounding was more intense more, more frequent, numbers swelling the monsters entreating violent entry. He saw the armored man toss a gladius to the male healer, then joined Razkar against the gate, bracing his shoulder against the stones. Razkar followed suit, ax in his right hand.

Giddy from his healing, overjoyed at the prospect of two battles in one day, he turned to the tiny gap between the stone and grinned a twisted grin.

"I killed your sons!" He bellowed in his mother's tongue, laughing with sadistic joy. "I killed your fathers! Your mothers and daughters! Now come forth so you can petching JOIN THEM!"

Vanator sighed in relief as Elem charged into the room. Though he was worried about Kavala, he knew the healer made a wise decision to patch up the stranger and himself. The Zeltivan did not even know what was trying to get it, but understood that it was important to keep them out. The Drykas wanted to offer Elem gratitude for mending his open wounds, but was only able to grunt and nod as the man handed him some substance to consume. Vanator did, and soon afterwards his already pounding heart jumped in pulse rate, and the weariness of the long battle lifted somewhat. Van didn't need to tell Elem to tend to Kavala, the man was already gone and at her side.

Another figure arrived. Serrif. Vanator was relieved and a bit surprised to see him dressed for war. The little Van knew of the man was that he was an accomplished medic, longbowman and remarkably perceptive. To see the northetner not only armed but clad in armor, fresh in body and mind, was a boon indeed. As the man joined in the attempt to hold the door, Van gave him a nod.

"Zith." He breathed, his face and hair spattered with blood. "Attacked us in the grass. Claws and teeth, some weapons, club, spear, dagger. If they get past us, they'll go through the whole place and kill everyone." He knew all to well what the enemy would want once they saw the Within, it was an ideal site for a colony. Vanator stood up, slamming the butt of his ax down on great bar across the stone gates, making sure it was seated in place.

[The Sanctuary] Sanctuary Means Survival

Postby Kavala on October 26th, 2012, 5:10 pm

Kavala came too slowly, as if she'd been someplace beautiful and didn't want to return. She opened her eyes, glanced around, and lifted her head. Half sitting up she nodded her thanks to Elem and took a moment to get her bearings. A scaled hand lifted to her scalp where her brother had tapped her and caused her to spiral down to oblivion to avoid the compulsion to heal the zith Razkar was sacrificing to his Goddess and to heal the wounded all around them.

She took in the sights, relived they were safe in the sea cave, and took in the vague sense of pounding and the fact they were locked in. "Gods...." She tried to get to her feet, paused, then used Elem as a set of hand holds and finally managed her feet. "Elem was there any stimulate in the kit? I am going to need some or to get some from another kit." She said, finding her feet and finding most of her pain gone. She nodded with a job well done at him, then tilted her head and listened.

"How many?" She asked softly, scared suddenly. "Oh gods. Our food stores and the livestock up top. We have the dogs, chickens, cows, goats... the birds in the mews. Medicines in the clinic. They'll raid us clean and destroy everything and we'll starve this winter." Kavala said suddenly. Then she had another thought.

"Is everyone here? Is everyone accounted for? Where's Aweston? Where's the kids?"
She asked, looking terrified for their safety momentarily. "Where is TASIVAL!?!?" She asked, knowing her son was with Cadra.

Kavala moved then. "Armor. Everyone in armor. Everyone armed. We'll have to go up top and fight them there from the cover of the buildings and the debris. We'll have to kill every last one of them or they will keep bringing more. Serrif, do you have poisons for arrows and blades? We need to do this right. We need to make this a slaughter, regardless of your ethics. If we don't, they will steal you, eat you or use you for pleasure. They are the worst sort of vermin. The worst!" She said, looking more confident as she came back into herself, Elem's healing having worked wonders.

If someone came up with a stimulate, she'd take it, knowing she'd be up for days afterwards and exhausted, but having it be worth it.

"So.. thoughts. Headcount. Where do we stand? These gates should hold here and I can solidify them if we are really worried. What we need to defend is up top. That's our lifeblood. Ideas?"
She asked, looking at Vanator and Razkar, willing to repeat herself if Razkar looked like he didn't understand her swift use of Common in a heavily accented Pavi voice. Her first goal was to find Tasi, the twins, and Aweston.

Looking around, all four suddenly were seen. The twins came in carrying weapons while Aweston was carrying bandages - more it seemed - as if he'd come straight from the clinic.

[The Sanctuary] Sanctuary Means Survival

Elem kept his head down as Serrif came in, mostly because he was focused on his job. He also thought it strange to let the horses bleed , but he apparently had no idea what was going on outside. Whatever they were, there were lots of them. He did mind the orders and helped Kavala to her feet, listening as she took charge. "There were only two vials in this kit, but I will gather more of them shortly." He was glad to see the warriors up and running, he only wished he had more capability in his own right. He would make sure never to be in this situation again:Unprepared, unaware. He loathed it.

Serrif then handed him a dagger and a large sword of some sort. Elem wielded them awkwardly, irritated as he was only in a pair of pants and had nowhere to put them. His mind came up with all sorts of terrible notions as Kavala explained what these 'vermin' would do. Eat you, steal you, use you for pleasure?! he wanted to get a hirt on or something. He was suddenly very pleased that he had bought the armor and other things he had at the bazaar. Standing around was not helping anyone, however. the rest seemed motivated enough. Now it was his turn.

Looking at Kavala primarily, Elem spoke clearly and calmly. " I need to go to my room and get suited up. A pair of pants ain't gonna cut it. I'll gather more kits on the way and meet you all at the bottom of the tunnel up at the front." Looking over to Serrif, he nodded, expelling his momentary irritation in the face of true danger. "Take this big one back. The dagger is easy enough to figure out, this other one can get taken away and used against me." He tossed the sword back to the older healer, confident he would catch it. Looking back at Kavala, he put his hand on her shoulder.

"i know I am outclassed here in terms of combat, but I will make sure everyone stays on their feet, okay? I've got to go get dressed. See you all at the front." He didn't wait to hear any more comments, his mind still in go mode as it had been when he was doing triage. He wanted to keep that edge. Elem left the room, moving through rooms on the way, grabbing the kits as he could. His pace quickened until he reached his room, the kits tossed on the bed as he quickly slid into leather pants, his fitted high boots, leather armor and slid his rucksack around his waist so it hung in the front. He started packing the sack with the scrolls, stimulant vials, bandages and other items from the kits, putting them in neat stacks for easy use. He slid the belt on so he could slide the dagger somewhere, leaving his hands free for the most part. He also wrapped his two slings up and looped them over the belt.

Just as Elem was looking around his room and about to leave, he thought to grab the new hoe he had purchased. It might seem ridiculous to the others, but he recalled some of the sounds against the gate coming from the top of it, even the sound of wings. Was that what he thought was crows earlier? A shiver ran down his spine. He needed something with reach and it would have to do. Suited up, he made his way toward the bottom of the tunnel that would lead up to the grounds..
