The Diamond of Kalea is located on Kalea's extreme west coast and called as such because its completely made of a crystalline substance called Skyglass. Home of the Alvina of the Stars, cultural mecca of knowledge seekers, and rife with Ethaefal, this remote city shimmers with its own unique light.

[Lhavit] Remarkable Things

I used a philtering shop in a thread and Colombina asked me if I'd mind writing it up fully, so here it is. Moved over from the old Development thread so people can comment :) .

The Starry Chalice

Image

The Starry Chalice is a philtering shop, an emporium of elixirs, tucked away in one of the many blue-washed buildings that make up the Azure Market. From the outside, it appears quite small - cramped, even, sandwiched between a clothier's stall and a food vendor. Appearances can be deceptive, however; the shop opens up considerably inside. The Azure Market façade is an eye-catching one - Tian, the redoubtable proprietress of the Chalice, is a great believer in displaying her skill, and so sturdy red lacquer shelves hold rank upon rank of shimmering bottles, phials, vials, flasks and other, more esoteric containers of all shapes, colours and materials, every one carefully stoppered and sealed with lily-imprinted wax. Overhead, strung on brassy chains, there hang ornate braziers, spilling scented smoke as a sort of advertisement for the skills of Chalice employees as well as completely masking the more unpleasant smells of the philtering discipline.

Inside continues the theme of organized clutter; more lacquerwork - in the form of cabinetry, shelves and a vast pigeonhole bureau covering the entire back wall – supports further examples of the philterer's art; elixirs, lotions, oils and unguents of all kinds. Proudly on display amid the finished goods are a plethora of ingredients necessary for the more common preparations – lip balms, sunburn salves and so forth – as well as some truly rare and expensive components for the professional philterer.

Apprentices, looking quite unsettling and alien in their protective gear, frequently bustle amongst the shelves, easily able to interpret the otherwise-impenetrable system of shorthand notation by which almost everything in the shop is labelled, collecting ingredients and philtres for customers or their own brewing tasks. The Chalice frequently sees a procession of couriers bearing the seals of the different Houses of Lhavit come to call; Tian is a major supplier for the Towers and the Temple itself.

Under normal circumstances, naturally, customers do not see beyond this part of the shop, but the Starry Chalice has several back rooms, too – one is a compact but professionally-equipped philtering laboratory, full of spiralling glassware, distillation and reduction apparatus and much else besides, with ingredients hanging on hooks and chains overhead, whilst the other is a large storeroom, kept chock-full of supplies and fulfilled orders.

Everything is overseen by the magisterial presence of Tian J'net, both the Starry Chalice's owner and its most accomplished philterer, who is reliably to be found either hunched over a piece of glassware, personally supervising the latest philtering, or else reigning from a plush chair in one corner of the Chalice, strategically placed to have the best view of both the shop and the philtering lab.

Tian J'net

Having just touched thirty, Tian J'net defies the philterer's stereotype, that of a crabbed man bent under the weight of years, with fingertips stained by unknown chemicals and eyes rheumy from the fumes. A full-figured lady, Tian combines in one body an expert philterer and keen chef both, with masses of lustrous black hair and a booming laugh fit for three people at once. To some, she can come across as rather intimidating; Tian's large frame, loud voice and imperious posture all combine to make her rather larger-than-life. She has, however, been serving the good citizens of Lhavit with their philtering requirements for years, and as such is a well-respected member of the city.

She keeps several apprentices, to ensure demand doesn't outstrip supply, and is known to be a patient yet exacting teacher. Nothing less than perfection will do for any goods put on her shelves or bearing the lily-seal of the Starry Chalice, and she strives to impart a sense of pride in their work to her apprentices. Safety is a common theme; customers will frequently hear the shop ring to Tian's impressive full-bore bellow if a vital piece of safety equipment – gloves, aprons, steel-capped boots and so forth – is neglected by her philterers.

Biography

Born in the hammer of winter in 482 A.V., Tian came from a family of artists, their work highly regarded in Lhavit, and was initially expected to follow in her parents' footsteps, either painting in a studio or working on the sculptures their family was known for. However, in the event, she quickly found the preparation of the pigments and cleaning fluids, the linseed oil preservatives and other such chemical accoutrements to be much more interesting than the actual artworks themselves. As per Lhavitian custom, her interest was encouraged and nurtured with a succession of apprenticeships and, in the fullness of time, when she was judged sufficiently skilled, her parents purchased a stall for her in the Azure Market.

Naturally, her own personal honour, and the values instilled by both her parents and the culture of Lhavit itself, saw that she worked hard to prove her skill and make her business a success, enabling her to pay off her debt to her parents in short order. Despite the expansion in custom over the years as her skill and reputation grew, she has steadfastly refused to move to an establishment in the Surya Plaza, or any other prominent location, preferring the bustle and local flavour of the Market and purchasing unused back space from the shops on either side for the purposes of expansion.

Skill List
Philtering: 71 pts
Cookery: 55 pts
Herbalism: 32 pts

I also developed Chiona Dusk, with Colombina's blessing, to give the Dusk Tower more than one instructor, and one more suited for lower levels of skill at that :p .

Image

Name: Chiona Dusk – 'Chii' to her family and anyone else brave enough to call her that to her face.

Race: Human

Date of Birth: 14th Winter, 484 A.V.

Place of Birth: The Dusk Tower of Lhavit

Titles and Positions: Lady (courtesy title), Instructor of Auristics at the Dusk Tower

Skills

Teaching: 50
Auristics:47
Meditation:43
Dao Sword:34
Intimidation: 26

Additional Information

Chiona Dusk is a scion of House Dusk, the eldest daughter of the Patriarch and heir apparent to the Dusk Tower entire. As part of her training to take up the mantle of leadership, she currently serves as the initial instructor for many of the Dusk Tower's apprentices, learning how to handle a wide spectrum of different styles and approaches whilst also honing her own skills in auristics and leadership both.

She is not, it has to be said, the most affable of the family – that title goes to her father without a doubt. Chiona is not exactly unfriendly either, however; 'severe' or 'austere' would best fit her manner, at least towards the Tower novices that she teaches. Serious and mindful of both her duties and the dangers of magic, she can come across as intimidating and authoritarian, and brooks little deviation from her prescribed styles; the djed storm of Spring 512 A.V. and the chaos it wrought only reinforced her strict and discipline-oriented ways, and she's certainly not above being cruel to be kind, as it were.

A mage of the purist school of thought, she makes a fine teacher of the basic tenets of auristics, although novices with a breadth rather than depth of experience may find her insistence on keeping the schools of magic separate somewhat wearing. Fortunately, once an apprentice passes beyond the novitiate stage, she opens up somewhat, showing a freer, kinder side that, out of a sense of duty, she represses in instructing the novices, lest they fail to take her instruction seriously and fall prey to one of the many dangers of magic.

Whilst her personality is quite a forceful one, especially when roused, and continually backed up by the absolute authority and assurance that comes from belonging to one of the finest families of Lhavit, Chiona herself is rather small and delicate-seeming. 'Seeming' is, however, the key word – the vigorous training regimen all Dusks go through with the Dao sword and spear has given her a lean, wiry strength and resilience that can come as something of a shock for those who see no deeper than the silk-swathed skin and perfumed hair.

Regardless, 'pretty' is the word that would be best used to describe her in her natural state, but she is vain and, by dint of a host of cosmetics and three hours skilled labour every morning from her servants, has managed to achieve the manufactured and distant beauty of a porcelain doll. She prefers rich and intricate clothes that emphasise contrasts – pale skin with dark fabric, which only enhances her doll-like appearance to many.

Held on the 88th Day of Winter, the Azure Festival is an annual celebration of the heavens. Weeks prior natives of Lhavit hustle in preparation for the coming event. Local bakeries bake unique pastries in the shape of suns, moons and stars, and many men and women follow suit. People clamor to buy and fashion gifts for those they care for. Tailors and seamstress also generate a great deal of revenue fashioning costumes for the nightly camaraderie that follows the daytime worship.

When the day in question arrives, a customary pilgrimage is made from the Temple of Time, to the Temple of the Sun and ending at the Temple of the Moon. Inhabitants leave small offerings and pray for the favor of the respective deities for the coming year. The temples flood with people for the greater part of the day.

ImageA common custom is to exchange gifts with the loved ones before the evening bells. The gifts are usually small but numerous and relevant to the chosen profession and deity of the person. They can be anything from a small silver ankle charm to a fresh calligraphy set. This is also when many children are bestowed with sweets. Young people also follow this trend and exchange treats in order to show favor with one another. Lovers will do much the same. The favor is especially pointed when the baked good given is homemade.

When night falls, the atmosphere shifts significantly. Those participating don costumes of blue and silver to honor Zintila and her stars. Masquerade masks are also customary, generally crafted to represent one aspect of their patron deity - stars, moons, hourglasses and sundials. The whole of Lhavit turns into a large party. Though optional, the masks are a popular addition, and many assume an alternate identity for the night.

Brightly colored paper lanterns are hung out from every window, the reflection from the skyglass casting a prismatic, ethereal glow on to the crowds below. The streets are lit with hues of rose, turquoise, teal, gold and green. These lights are maintained throughout the celebrations which extend far into the wee hours of the morn and are only snuffed at daybreak.

Local musicians busk on street corners and merchants openly sell certain wares - mostly food and alcoholic beverage. Small curio stands are littered amongst the fare, enticing the visitor and native alike into purchasing memorabilia for the annual occurrence. Lilting laughter echoes through the various regions, as friends, neighbors and relatives lose themselves in the joyful debauchery. Each of the five peaks offer a different flavor to enjoy.

The Sundial Circle is a small 'triangle' built tucked in between a confluence of three buildings off Zintia Peak. The Koten Temple rests on its right while the old Observatory turned herbalism shop All Things Wild rests on its left. Behind it is a rather large private residence. Due to its proximity to both the Koten Temple and All Things Wild, the Sundial Circle has gardens surrounding it on three sides. This small shrine to Syna is accessible by a six foot wide pathway leading between the temple and the old observatory.

Brickwork lines the circle while a profusion of ornamental plants are tucked into the corners including elaborate small scale decorative trees mainly consisting of fancy leafed maples. Flowers are planted seasonally, in whatever is appropriate and thriving at the time. In winter, the Sundial Square is often heavy with snow so instead of flowers the Sundial is established with illuminated stones that cause it to give off a magical glow at night. Benches line the circle, giving visitors somewhere to rest their feet and settle to admire the sundial and perhaps offer up a prayer to Syna.

Sundial Circle contains an immense classic horizontal sundial. In typical Lhavitian fashion, this sundial has a distinctive difference between the original all metal or stone design of most sundials. Instead of being solid, some of its parts are made of plants, flowers, and even stones depending on the season. This horizontal sundial consists of a horizontal dial plate and polar-pointing gnomon. The gnomon is the part of a sundial that casts the shadow used to tell time. The Sundial in Sundial Circle is made up of opaque skyglass which is set up to glow at night. Typically, horizontal sundials have a triangle-shaped gnomon and Sundial Circle's sundial is no different. The upper edge of the gnomon is known as the 'style.' This sundial has two styles, since its gnomon is one foot wide and thus has two edges. The gnomon and styles of a properly oriented horizontal sundial points toward the Celestial North Pole. The dial face is 21 feet in diameter. The gnomon is 10 feet in length, 8.115 ft. in height, and 1 ft. in width.

Visitors are welcome year round. Volunteers care for the Sundial Circle as an act of loving community service.

I was wondering if there could be some push behind a Wizard Organization? Probably another force adjacent with the Shinya. I thought it should have it with this being such a magical place.

Located about two miles from Lhavit's main gates traversing rocky sometimes difficult trails, The Kinell Hotsprings lie tucked up against the mountainside with an amazing view of the surrounding mountains and sky. The Kinell Hotsprings are named for the nocturnal Kinell Kingfisher, which is a diminutive brightly colored bird that has an intense cry that sounds like a young human choir soloist singing in a forlorn foreign tongue. When multiple Kinell Kingfishers get together, they produce incredibly varied pitches of tones that remind listeners of an entire children's choir singing. Visitors to Lhavit have been incredibly moved by the sound before, sometimes even shedding tears at the beauty of the joined birdsong. Thus the Hotsprings, where most of the population of Kinell's live, are always echoing with strange and unusual song.

The Hotpsrings themselves are one big deep pool with rock ledges surrounding it that make for perfect seating. The superheated water erupts from the mountainside about eight to ten feet above the pool on its rockiest northern edge and cascades in a waterfall (which cools it somewhat) down into the rock basin that makes up the main part of the Hotsprings. Easy to access from the ledges around it, the Hotsprings run warm enough to use all year round but cool enough to not harm those even in the heat of the summer. The Hotsprings are fairly deep in their center, more than twenty feet in some places. Though there are rock outcropings and fingers of stone that rise to the surface allowing for resting even in the middle of the pool. Small streams formed from the Hotsprings overflow trickle down the mountainside steaming for several yards before they cool off and vanish into the mountain landscape.

The Hotsprings exist on an area of about an acre of land. And due to the steady warmth and year round dampness not effected by snows, some oddly lush plants thrive in their muddy stone pockets at the margins of the water. Flowers found nowhere else on Mizahar bloom around these Hotsprings. Often, bridges in Lhavit carry Kinnel blooms in their hair to signify good luck and prosperity. Viewed during the day the Hotsprings have a bright blue hue that allows a visitor to see all the way to the bottom. Viewed at night the springs take on an almost emerald tint and often reflect the stars in the sky on clear nights. Steam rises constantly from the surface of the water, both day and night, although this vapor is more visible in the winter than in the summer due to the ambient air temperature.

The Kinell Hotsprings are home to other interesting flora and fauna as well. A tiny lizard, no bigger than most people's fingers thrives in and around the stone of the Hotsprings. Called Star Lizards, the little creatures are a deep dark blue with skin prone to iridescence. Speckled across their skin are glittering white spots that resemble stars in the night sky. These lizards drink nectar and feed off insects found on flowers surrounding the Hotsprings. Kept as pets by the children of Lhavit, star lizards are friendly and make very good pocket companions so long as the youths are careful with the tiny creatures.

(pronounced ah-lay-ahs)

This otherworldly locale lies a short distance from Surya Plaza. A weathered trail up toward Koten Temple abruptly veers left toward a verdant overhang, the deciduous forest seemingly growing from the side of Lhavit’s jagged peak. If one chooses to walk the dirt trail, they’ll find themselves in a lavish park infused by wild djed. By day the scenery is perpetually illuminated by the rays of twilight. The ambient light is warm, reflecting hues of rose, orange, and red. By night those colors shift naturally into varying shades of blue - from deepest navy to fluorescent turquoise. This vivid spectrum adds an ethereal, otherworldy appeal that attracts Lhavit’s seasonal visitors in flocks.

Various native flora and fauna populate Ahleas Park, most notably the fadeong – Lhavit's unique, multi-colored tree. Other commonly known plants are wanamu tree, zujin flowers, leiyona flowers and the jasao weed. Bobcat most commonly roam the park’s richly populated avenue, alongside mountain cat, deer mice and countless squirrel. The wildlife is relatively harmless and large predators are routinely relocated from within its perimeter for safety reasons.

At the very center of the location lies a lovely little pond that harbors the aforementioned waterborne plants. Due to the djed influence there lie no fish within its tranquil waters. Various benches crafted from skyglass line the water’s edge, as well as different stops along the park’s spidery pathways. The vivid lights reflect from these seats, casting rainbows across the surrounding surfaces. This creates a wholly incredible scene both during day and night.

One of the park’s main highlights is a special breed of firefly known as the prismfly. Their flickering tails shift color, as opposed to simply lighting up. Drawn by the fadeong that populate the park, the two species share a similar characteristic; any attempts to relocate the prismfly are met with failure. As all of these features are completely unqiue to Lhavit, the park is garners much attention throughout the year. Despite the non-descript entryway, Ahleas Park’s popularity has increased threefold since its inception. It’s been expanded several times since then. Ahleas is currently 6 acres total and set to grow. Though new, Ahleas is undeniably gorgeous and has become one of Lhavit’s overarching tourist traps.

The Sunrise Nook is one of the more recent additions to Lhavit’s collection of restaurants. Braced against the Shooting Star Inn, the Sunrise Nook offers a more affordable variation of its neighbor’s gourmet selection. It has a simple, unassuming façade with an overall scheme of white and red, the latter being the accent color. Upon approaching, you’ll notice a simple white and red striped canvas portico, shading the heavy crimson door. Upon turning the skyglass handle, you step into a simplistic open room. A counter runs along one side where the clerk stands, the polished surface a swirling marble. There are stools for those who wish to sit directly at the counter, and the unfurnished center holds a glass display of various baked goods for interested customers to peruse.

There are small, circular tables littering the rest of the establishment, and all of these are finely wrought from both metal and skyglass, fitting well with Lhavit’s overall atmosphere. Parties up to six may sit at these tables and will be served by chipper men and women garbed in the aforementioned colors. The establishment opens at Sunrise, hence its namesake and closes shortly after noon each day. The only exception to this schedule is on holidays where it remains open until sunset in order to benefit from the orgy of visitors that flood the city streets. Renowned for its baked goods, the centered, glass display case containing various cakes, pies and tarts tends to stand half-empty. The owner and head chef, Ajah typically finds herself working well into the afternoon, baking the next day’s purchases.

All in all, the Sunrise Nook is an ideal destination for those who wish to catch up with friends, enjoy a tranquil atmosphere or simply enjoy a filling and inexpensive meal. The business tends to show favor toward regulars with complementary desserts, heightening its appeal to the locals.

ImageAjah Landry
skills – 60 Cooking, 12 Unarmed, 33 Rhetoric and 27 Leadership
Ajah Landry is a Lhavit native from birth. For a short time she left to study culinary arts in Zeltiva around 508. Ajah returned shortly thereafter, desperately homesick for the starry city and eager to put her business experience to good use. Since the opening of the Sunrise Nook, she has received critical acclaim for her skill as both a chef and an innovator. In particular she supports the Azure Festival, running a sizable stand in the midst of the Plaza, offering annually themed cookies and pastries.

In conversation she is a witty and charming woman, with an offbeat sense of humor. Ajah is not opposed to chatting with customers as she works and will visit tables often, checking on the service and quality of the meal. For this she has developed a close relationship with those who visit often and is admired by many. Though unmarried, she has a steady boyfriend who occasionally visits the store – an Ethfael by the name of Sijoh.

Tucked into a little corner on the Shinyama Peak, the peak that honours the sky, the moon and the stars, The Star’s Shadow is a small little bar, looking out over a large courtyard, that deals in intoxication and having a good time. The bar is small, just one room big enough for the bar itself and a latrine. The walls and ceiling are all crafted solely from skyglass: the building is small enough that such a venture was indeed affordable. The bar itself is made from a deep rich wood, found from a fallen tree in the Misty Peaks, and made just for this purpose. At the bar there are no stools, and behind it are an array of wines and spirits, all distilled locally. There is no indoor seating at The Star’s Shadow; rather, all the chairs and tables for the patrons to sit on are found scattered around the courtyard that the bar opens onto. As a result, the bar is only open in the Summer and the Spring, for in the cooler months, it would be far too cold for the patrons to visit.

In the courtyard, there are no lamps or lanterns to illuminate the area. Save for the few candles burning in the bar to help along with the creation of drinks, the bar is illuminated solely by the skyglass of the building. The plants in this area, too, are infused with a high proportion of calias. As such, there are a number of small trees and bushes present in the courtyard. This gives the entire bar and its patron an unearthly glow: a good place for the shadier deals, and those seeking privacy. Situated high on the Shinyama Peak, the courtyard looks over the heart-stopping drops of the Misty Peaks. The view faces away from Lhavit, so that all one can see is the endless rise of mountains in the Unforgiving. The waiters constantly have to watch out for the intoxicated, as with no barriers at the edge of the peak, one could fall to a very unpleasant, very drunk death far below.

Drinks are brought from the bar by waiters and waitresses, wearing all black and blending into the shadows. The bar serves strictly no food: it's alcohol and alcohol alone, although sometimes one can find nuts on the counter to munch on while they wait for their drinks. If the drunks become too unruly, with fights breaking out, some of the more muscled waiters will intervene and escort them off the premises, with a ban from visiting the bar until the next year. If this happens twice, the right to go to The Star's Shadow is revoked entirely.

Ale: 3 topaz kina
Pure spirits: 5 topaz kina
Cocktails: 7 topaz kina
"Lhavitian Glow": 2 kina. A special cocktail of the house. The recipe is thoroughly guarded. The drink, when mixed correctly, glows slightly like skyglass. One of these is the equivalent to four beers.

Anya Tai is a woman who knows how to manipulate men to her advantage. She is tall, with vibrant red hair and cherry-red lips. Her mother, an Inartan chiet who had left Wind Reach in search of a land where she would have more of a standing, had a one night stand, intoxicated, with a tall dark-skinned man who turned out to be one of the Ethaefal. Anya grew up with her father, as her mother eventually went back to Wind Reach, preferring the devil she knew. Anya is often seen wandering around the courtyard, talking to the patrons. She manages the accounts and acts as hostess of the bar. She is oddly close to Miken, the head bartender at The Star's Shadow.

Miken Heid is the second-in-command to Anya; the primary bartender at The Star's Shadow. He can be seen there every night behind the bar, whipping up drinks as efficiently as the dawn for patrons. No request for a mixed drink is unheard of to Miken: he makes it his business to ask travellers at the docks regularly for new recipes drinks from other cities. He is a joker, and enjoys teasingly insulting near everyone who comes into the bar. His relationship with Anya, too, is somewhat peculiar. Though he is near ten years younger, the two are constantly touching, laughing and flirting. Those who attend the bar theorise that there is a secret relationship between the two.
