Hey there,
The purpose of the heirloom in the starting package is to add a bit of extra uniqueness to your starting package. It can literally be anything you want that is under 50 GM and isnt magical. It can be anything, from anyone, as long as its important or has some significance to your PC you are golden (For example, one could take an heirloom as the knife that was used to kill your family with -insert tragic backstory here- and said PC wants to use said knife to kill the killer). I use mine as a story tool a lot, that is what heirlooms are good for in my opinion. Be creative with it and have fun.
Good luck starting,
Rayage
EDIT- Kelski beat me to it

“Method is more important than strength, when you wish to control your enemies. By dropping golden beads near a snake, a crow once managed to have a passer-by kill the snake for the beads.” ~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
