6th Day of Winter, 514AV

As dawn broke over the horizon, and spread slowly across the Lake and over the city, bathing Ravok in the promising glow of warmth, the city slowly came to life. Those with knowledge of meteorology, or even a knack of instinct with the weather, might know that today would be a warm day. Only those who knew the significance of the sixth day of the season might see the warmth as an omen that the Defiler was looking favourably upon the city. Soon, the intelligence, courage and loyalty of ten individuals would soon be tested, and their success could mean the continued survival of the lake-based city.

On the second day of Winter, each invitee had been approached by a young courier, dressed in black. His garb should have made it instantly obvious that he was working under the Black Sun. The boy had handed over a small, folded parchment which, when each accepted, had felt surprisingly heavy. Upon opening the contents, a small medallion, with an intricately embossed circle surrounding a sun, had have slipped out. When each had finished reading their letters, they would have noticed that the courier boy had long disappeared. Questions would not be answered until the sixth.

In the centre of the city, The Temple of the Black Sun would not only be the centre of prayer, but the location of a meet. Four seasons previously, the first signs of a terrible monster living in the depths of Lake Ravok had started to appear. As the seasons progressed, the signs grew more obvious, and more terrible. Food was now scarce and some had lost their lives. A seasons go, Ravok found itself host to a number of unwelcome guests. The xenophobic nation discovered that a new species of Dhani had appeared from the water, fleeing the aquatic monster that ravaged their home too. When their presence was first discovered, a number of Ravokian natives took matters into their own hands, treating them like scum, ambushing those with sibilance of serpentine mannerisms, tying them up and throwing them into the lake.

Some way through the Fall season, a contingent of spokesmen for the new arrivals sought the leaders of Ravok: the Black Sun, and they were granted an audience. It followed that a decree was cascaded through the ranks, and into the city - the Ivyess were not to be harmed. No information was shared, but five individuals had received letters, invitations to the Temple, to join the Ivyess. Each knew that their invitations could not be declined, and they would be expected to arrive no later than a bell after dawn.

The Ivyess were first to arrive - three in total, two were only recently adults, send one elder. In human form they arrived, together, and when the entered the Temple, they approached one of the many officials in the vast room. Flourishing a medallion at the Agent, they were able to announce their presence in silence. The Agent, aware of the situation, inclined his head and led them away from the public eye. Down corridors they walked, until they were invited to enter a room and await the remaining delegates. Other Agents had watched the Freshwater Ivyess arrive, and were all aware that another five would soon join them. All waited to have a medallion flashed, before they, too, would escort the Ravokians through to meet the Ivyess.

OOCFigured I'd go ahead and post up since no one had done so yet. Hope its not too terrible. :p

“This seems like a set up.”

The words echoed into Annalisa Marin’s mind as she neared the Temple of the Black Sun, her spirit finding fulfillment in just gazing upon its glory. The voice was not her own and indeed was possessed of an opinion wholly her own. Beneath Anna’s dark silk robes and around her right ankle was a single golden anklet, the Kirt familiar Vex. Today the anklet felt a little tighter around her ankle, not constricting but it was certainly noticeable. The familiar seemed a little too worried about this summons, not focusing upon the possible benefits that might indeed come their way.

“You already said that, Vex. What reason would the Black Sun have to set me up? I’m relatively unknown.” She replied mentally.

“Do not lie to yourself Anna! The Black Sun is the reason you are here, lest you forget and you are also a wealth of knowledge on Sahova. Do not dismiss my concerns as you might a child’s. What if this ‘gathering’ is merely a fiction? A smokescreen to snatch you up- us up- and drag you away for interrogation?” The Kirt projected, her tone very much incensed.

Anna snorted. “They could have done that last season when I first arrived. I see no danger here; in fact there is opportunity to be had if nothing else.”

“They are followers of the same god as you, a god of Traitors and Liars. They don’t need ‘reason’ for their actions Anna. If you would look beyond your blind devotion for an instant you would see that!” Vex roared in the Chaon’s mind.

“Shut up! Just shut up! What do you know of it? Nothing! We are going to do this, Vex, end of story. Don’t you ever question my devotion or faith in Rhysol again. I am still your master and you are my familiar.” Anna shot back, her tone filled with righteous anger and her brows knitting together.

Silence reigned upon the pair as the Temple doors came closer and closer. It was broken by Vex, her voice strangely subdued. “Very well ‘master’ do as you wish. I will watch and wait, one of us might as well display a modicum of common sense.”

Anna refrained from replying to that and simply let the discussion end there. This was not the first time Vex had called question to her faith or her actions led by faith. It was a subject of frequent friction, the Kirt making no secret of how she disliked the blind spot the sorceress possessed when it came to Rhysol. Anna meanwhile responded as any good zealot might, with indignation and fiery rebuke. This was actually one of the more tame conversations they had on the subject. The conversation after Anna had been stabbed by Rhysol’s own hand had… been very unpleasant.

The sorceress’ thoughts turned away from Vex and her misgivings and instead focused on the matter at hand. She was not familiar with this so called ‘monster’ in anything more than the slimmest of rumors. Yet she was the representative called from the Institute. It could have to do with her extensive arcane knowledge… Anna wondered how much the Sun knew of her actions or research on Sahova. It might also be her apparent favor from Rhysol being that she, an outsider, had appeared in the city with a clear sign of his blessing. It might also be for some unknown reason. Maybe Vex was right and this was a cover, it seemed unlikely but the Kirt was right about one thing. She was dealing with other followers of her god. The worst might be something to consider.

The letter had spoken of Dhani… a race she had met once or twice but knew very little about. It seemed odd that Sub-Humans were needed to deal with this situation however she supposed Rhysol used whatever tools at his disposal. It had also promised to possibly eliminate her probationary period of citizenship, a tempting prospect. Whoever Ameli was she had a good way of enticing someone to meetings. Not as if she had much choice. She was the representative from the IHL after all, meaning it was likely she’d be the only mage there. Pity.

Anna had brought the medallion and had it stored in her voluminous sleeves, the item sitting alongside the dagger known as Chaos Thorn. When she walked to a Black Sun Agent she produced the item and held it to him, her silver Sahovan Wizard Ring still glinting with ruby light on her right ring finger. With this done she awaited the man to escort her to whatever gathering this really was. Or possibly to a trap in which case she planned to demonstrate just why she had managed to survive nearly a year on Sahova.

OOC: I'm not sure what you meant by medallions, since my message had no mention of it. I can only assume that is since I'm a member of the Ebonstryfe, and already allowed into such places.

IC:

6 Winter 514

Clyde had been interested to hear of the problem in lake Ravok that had occurred since his leaving. A lake monster of all things... Now though it appeared he was to be a part of the solution to said problem, which only made sense with his past services to Ravok.

He'd made quite a name for himself as a mage on his last Ravokian quest, the one to Syliras, where he had single handedly taken on a large part of a horde of yukmen. His magic in all its ferocity and power had made it possible for many of the expedition to survive. Other expeditions his work had been less reported, and had not been seen by so many people, and so was not as well known a story. Even if his later endeavors had actually been more impressive.

Now he was once more acting as a member of the Ebonstryfe, using his skills and his knowledge of things arcane, of djed workings, and would aid Ravok once more.

He'd recieved a letter directly from Aemeli, a high ranking Druvin no less, who worked within the black sun.

And so he had set out to prove his worth, armed in his skills arcane, and several products of magic. He wore his plain clothes, as he did not want to risk damaging or fighting in his finer things. But over his plainer clothes he wore a fine pair of robes with the emblem of the Ebonstryfe plainly laid upon its chest. It was a work of Magecrafting, lighter and more durable than a normal pair of robes, as strong as some armor.

In his hand he held Cha, his Magic Staff, a item that never left his side. It was a instrumental tool of his magic, a conduit for his djed, and something forged with djed by his own hand. It was nigh indestructible, with the powerful enchantment laid upon it to increase is durability. And its base form had been pretty good, being izentor crafted by an isur of some percentage. As its namesake Cha, which meant blue in the Ancient Tongue, it was blue. This had nothing to do with its enchantments, instead being its natural hue, as it was made of Vian Wood, which was a rare wood found only on Mura.

So armed and prepared for what came before him, Clyde set off across Ravok, to the place of the meeting. For a moment he felt a odd sense, similar to the one he often felt coming from deep within the scar on his chest, the mark of Chaos made by Rhysol's blood, reverberating within Cha. But the feeling passed almost as soon as it had begun, and Clyde was sure he had simply imagined it.

Clyde could not help uttering a short rhyme to himself, something he'd been doing increasingly often of late as he did magic. It simply felt... Right... And so he did it, with a small odd grin on his face.

“And so another journey begins. To stop a threat of tooth and fins.”

I am actually in RL a super intelligent hamster from Rhode Island, with a 7 year plan to take over the world.

Update 6/2/18- 1:10AM EST: His 7 year plan a success, and several weeks ahead of schedule, Clyde leaves to oversee the world he has taken over.

No new threads after end of Spring 518-Will still be checking for PM's occasionally, but focusing on a new character.

Graders note: :
Please be aware Clyde is a master Magecrafter. He therefore should not be gaining full xp(or possibly shouldn't gain any at all) for simple tasks related to this magic, such as low level MC items, particularly for repetitions of creations he has done before. Feel free to contact me if unsure of a instance of his magic use compared to his skill level.

Postby Valerius Nitrozian on December 6th, 2014, 8:14 pm

Valerius didn’t know what to make of the letter that the courier had delivered early in the morning. He sat at his desk, in his room at the Nitrozian Estate, the medallion in his hand and read the letter a second time and then a third time. At first he had been pleased, almost beyond measure, had been convinced that the Black Sun had finally realized his talents and that this would be the beginning of a great career. But deep down he knew that he really wasn’t such a great man, that there were other members of his family, like Amanda or Trevinus, that would be able to represent House Nitrozian much better.

So why had Aemeli asked him to attend the meeting? Did she have a hidden plan? Did she think him a gullible, a young, foolish man that would be so happy to represent House Nitrozian that he wouldn’t question anything? No, that couldn’t be it. Why would the Black Sun do that when several members of his family bore Rhysol’s mark? She had mentioned the NMSS, that was something he had come up with, something that his family had no part in. Maybe Amanda and Trevinus would be able to represent House Nitrozian better, but only he could represent both the NMSS and House Nitrozian.

He hid the letter in his desk, put the medallion away and called a slave to help him get ready. A few chimes later he was sitting in a ravosala that took him to the Temple of the Black Sun. He was dressed elegantly, in black and midnight blue. The medallion was in one of his pockets.

After he had entered the temple, he approached Agent and wordlessly showed him the medallion before he let it disappear again. As they walked towards their destination, his thoughts went back to the contents of the letter. Aemeli had mentioned the Dhani. He had had little contact with the snake people so far and didn’t know what to think of them. He recognized that they might have certain skills, but their snake forms were repulsive, and when they spoke, they often seemed to do so with a lisp.

Did she really think that the creatures had been sent by Rhysol?

He entered the room and joined the delegates that were already waiting, his head held high and the expression on his face carefully neutral. If Aemeli thought that the Dhani could help, that they could be useful, then so be it. He could forget his dislike for them for a while, for the sake of Ravok.

As he heard Clyde speak, he briefly looked at him – he had met the mage before – but he didn’t say anything. He just inclined his head a fraction. He had no interest in half poetic comments and no talent for them either.

Inoadar

Dawn...the difference between those that wish to survive the day, and those that intend to gain from it. By the time the first glimpse of Syna began to lighten the morning's horizon, Inoadar was already up, groomed and dressed. Dawn itself was still a bell away. Inoadar would be ready for it.

He would not deceive himself into thinking that he knew what the impending meeting was about, but he knew it was of paramount importance to impress. It involved the Black Sun, and he knew this was his avenue to greater standing in his chosen city. A Druvin's signature graced the invitation he held reverently in his hand, the accompanying medallion hung over his heart. His own backing family was headed by yet another Druvin, but he would make no mention of this to Aemeli. There could well be no love lost between such creatures.

Dropping the name of Valdinox in the presence of Aemeli could easily backfire. He had been summoned "as an expert in the valuable field of poison crafting", not as a minion of Valdinox. Besides, he had no doubt that his Matron would be watching. He would not let her down. It could only boost his chance to obtain lasting prestige by impressing two Druvin with one success.

He arrived at the Temple, pausing to absorb its glory in the breaking of dawn. It seemed to hold the deep dark for a moment longer than was natural, as if to let Syna know her touch was only permitted at Rhysol's pleasure. He entered the Temple, recalling how it was always an atmosphere of chaos that prevailed the other times he neared the grand structure. Riots, fires, attempted kidnappings...

He smiled. 'Let the lesser world make its feeble attempts...' he sneered in silent defiance. 'The enemy's best efforts only succeed in seeing the Temple rebuilt better each time.' It was humbling to actually enter at the beck and call of the Black Sun though. Something previously unknown to him. Prior to this, he'd been given to understand his mission as one requiring the maintenance of his facade of indifference towards Rhysol.

Now he was called to attend! He surged with pride to walk boldly into the very seat of Mizahar's most glorious being. He found himself struggling to restrain tears of gratitude for the honor.

But his efforts were suddenly aided by the sight of the one ahead of him, brandishing the same medallion he himself had brought forth from beneath his coat to display to the waiting escorts.

Clyde...petching...Sullins...

Ever the man showed up to undermine Inoadar's opportunities for prominence. Well, he would endure this setback. In fact, he would prevail! A sudden exhilaration bolstered his resolve. This would be a proving ground for him. This was no backroom meeting, no growling face off, the two men alone, enduring the difficulty of restraining their hatred of each other to serve some quiet end. He would show this man up once and for all!

The Black Sun would be watching, this time. Clyde had shown no regard whatsoever, during their last encounter, for Inoadar's ties to a strong Black Sun family, acting as if Ebonstryfe ties were all that mattered. This time, the poisoner would gladly endure whatever insults the mage chose to shower him with. Results would be the measure of worth here. If Sullins was seen to lose focus on THAT end, in pursuit of petty vindictiveness, all the better.

But Inoadar was grounded enough to realize he needed to guard against that failure himself. This would not be easy.

The medallions, which were little more than trivial tokens that signalled to the Black Sun which individuals were privy to the significance of this day, allowed all who revealed them instant access to the private rooms deep within the main façade of the Temple of the Black Sun. As each arrived, they would be invited to enter the room already occupied by the Ivyess delegation. As each came in, there would be no doubt as to who these people were, for, although they had arrived in human form so as not to draw unnecessary attention to themselves, now that they sat around a tale in private, they had reverted to their Dhani forms.

As each arrived, they expected looks of aversion towards them but, given that they were required for this mission's success, they made no effort to make their human companions comfortable. First was the arcane expert from the Institute of Higher Learning, Annalisa Marin. None spoke when the door opened and entered the room. The Mage's escort did not offer introductions (for he did not know what introductions to give) but left her there to return to his post. The Dhani, too, did not speak, only their inhuman stare was an indication that they were aware of the woman's presence.

Just under ten chimes of silencewould pass before the second arrival, Ebonstryfe Clyde Sullins, who received a similar reception. The remaining two followed in quick succession, Valerius Nitrozian and Nolan Parnell. At the arrival of the poison crafter, one Dhani inclined her head, acknowledging his entrance - the poisoner was known. A few more chimes of silence passed before the door opened a final time, heralding the arrival of the instigator of this meeting; the Druvin Aemeli. Tall, the blonde Druvin towered over the Acolyte who accompanied her into the room, though her two seemingly blind eyes were what gave her away as one of the most powerful and influential people in the city.

Cold eyes passed over each of those present, inspecting each as if judging their worthiness once again. Though the process might have been unnerving, Aemeli had no doubts about those present; it had taken well over half a season to select these individuals... to have no faith in them meant having no faith in herself. "
Welcome, for those of you who do not know me, I am Aemeli, Priestess of the Black Sun. This is Acolyte Stephin Xeres, who will be acting as Chair for this meeting of our two cultures."

You have been invited here because you have skills which we deem to be indispensable to this endeavour. By Leth's rising, it is our hope that Ravok's way of life will no longer be threatened by the mister in the depths of the lake.” The Druvin took a step back and motioned for the Acolyte to take over. It was clear that she would not be leaving, more controlling the group through her puppet.

Yseuse is an Elder of our Dhani guests,” Stephin only offered personal names of the Ivyess, as had been previously agreed, “and Celsia and Vesse are members of her family.” The Acolyte continued around the table, making introductions in order of eating arrangements, “Clyde Sullins, a Mage and member of the Ebonstryfe with the added honour or being our Sahovan Representative. Annalisa Marin, also a decorated Mage, and Voiding Instructor at the highly esteemed Institute of Higher Learning. Valerius Nitrozian, a member of one of our most affluent families and Co-Owner of the Nitrozian-Moletta Sanitary Station. And, finally Nolan Parnell, poison crafter and Owner of Ino Vations.

There was a moment's hesitation, and Stephin glanced around at his superior, who gazed impassively back. Stephin was an older gentleman, a man possibly in his late forties or early fifties. Grey and white streaks were evident in his hair. His age left him with the experience and confidence to take charge, though he felt at a loss with the Druvin watching his every move. “
Now, I would invite you to share knowledge of the matter... please do not hold back; today is a day where the wealth of knowledge must be evenly distributed.

Read Me :
Clyde, the medallions weren't mentioned in the PMs, just in the first post :p
Rosen, if you can join us, just post as a late arrival. I'm really sorry, but if you don't make it in this cycle, I'll be opening it up to other players... it's not fair for me to hold the space.

Also, I forgot to mention in my first post that, should you decide that it makes sense for your character to bow out IC, you will not be penalised on your reward (which is based on how well you live up to my expectations of your strengths, rather than longevity). I'm not going to forcibly kick you out xD but if you feel that your PC has done his/her bit, then I will respect that! That being said... please don't feel like you have to leave just because I said this!

P.S. 400th post! You lucky buggers! Anyone would think I'd planned it that way...

Postby Clyde Sullins on December 18th, 2014, 9:23 pm

Clyde was not overly upset or undone by the sight of the Dhani. He supposed after one went to bed after sleeping with a woman, and awoke to find a tiger in her place, little so far as aesthetics could so startle him. With these at least he was fully awake, and had time to register and understand it, before setting at the matter at hand. Plus he had been informed of their being here before he came.

Their reptilian nature was of course different from a kelvic, but the difference between their appearance and human appearance was no less different than a kelvic shifted.

Or at least, such was the logic in Clyde's mind, whether or not said logic was true for all or even most.

It was in fact the human inhabitants that startled him more. Clyde was somewhat surprised to know he knew all the others more or less. Nolan the poisoner, Anna his cousin, and Val the Nitrozian that he had once spoke of Magecrafting with.

It did appear that perhaps Nolan knew the Dhani, or the Dhani knew him, a bit of a surprise, making him wonder how they had met or been acquainted.

His thought on such things was broken however, when their white eyed organizer appeared, the Druvin Aemeli. Clyde had not met many Druvin in his time, but certainly she was the first female one he'd met. Clyde wondered why that was, if there was perhaps a reason why men were more commonly made Druvin... Perhaps some quality men had that made them more likely to become one? Or perhaps some quality men lacked which woman did not, that thus made the men more likely... An interesting thought, one that perhaps merited some study and investigation.

As with Anna, Clyde could feel his connection to Rhysol within the Druvin, but with her it was stronger, clearly since she had more marks and thus was more strongly tied to him.

"Welcome, for those of you who do not know me, I am Aemeli, Priestess of the Black Sun. This is Acolyte Stephin Xeres, who will be acting as Chair for this meeting of our two cultures."

“You have been invited here because you have skills which we deem to be indispensable to this endeavour. By Leth's rising, it is our hope that Ravok's way of life will no longer be threatened by the mister in the depths of the lake.”

And there it was, their reason for coming, the danger in the deeps of lake Ravok, a unheard of thing in the normally peaceful place of the lake. Clyde did not doubt that Rhysol himself knew of the beast, and likely permitted it... Or perhaps simply was disinterested enough to not personally take care of it. Depending upon how he saw the monsters existence, it could mean he was duty bound to destroy it, or duty bound to not...

Next was the introductions, explaining who was whom via the acolyte.

“Yseuse is an Elder of our Dhani guests, and Celsia and Vesse are members of her family.”

“Clyde Sullins, a Mage and member of the Ebonstryfe with the added honour or being our Sahovan Representative. Annalisa Marin, also a decorated Mage, and Voiding Instructor at the highly esteemed Institute of Higher Learning. Valerius Nitrozian, a member of one of our most affluent families and Co-Owner of the Nitrozian-Moletta Sanitary Station. And, finally Nolan Parnell, poison crafter and Owner of Ino Vations.”

The acolyte paused, perhaps waiting a moment in case the Druvin wished to speak, or perhaps waiting for an indicator to continue. Clearly he was not used to acting with a Druvin looking over his shoulder.

“Now, I would invite you to share knowledge of the matter... please do not hold back; today is a day where the wealth of knowledge must be evenly distributed.”

Clyde was unsure who would speak first, and was in no great hurry to do so. But after a few moments of silence, it seemed perhaps he should step in, take the lead of sorts. Or at least get what he had to say out of the way, so that others could react to it and discuss it. At the moment he felt he had little to say about dealing with the monster, but supposed if nothing else he could give a synopsis.

“So, we are here to generate ideas upon how to deal with the monster in the lake. Clearly we are here for our varying skills and abilities, which allow varying outcomes and ideas from each of us, and to perhaps combine said abilities.”

“On my front, my magics, I'd say I would be most useful either as a Reimancer and Glypher, or as a Magecrafter.”

“We could take what would best be termed the "brute force" method. Making weapons or such to attack it, lightning bolts that could level a building in one shot, discharged from a device. Or other such magically created elements which could be carried forth and used to attack the monster. All one time use, and so a decent number of them would need to be made, assuming such would even kill the beast.”

“Alternatively with Magecrafting, if a piece or bit of the monster could be acquired, a weapon against it could be fashioned that would be its bane. Since its in the water, perhaps a harpoon or a spear or some such weapon would be best... It would be costly, but such a weapon could perhaps be made, if said piece of it could be acquired. Another brute force method. Said method would be time consuming, as such a device to be made would take days.”

“For using in tracking it, perhaps some device or compass of sorts could be enchanted that would lead us too it, point to it, though that would also require a bit of the monster. It could likely be made quicker than the aforementioned weapon, but could be useful in tracking it down.”

“As for other methods... I have spoken with Nolan here at length about poisons. Perhaps if he likewise could get a portion or piece of the monster, he could make some form of special poison that would affect the monster specifically, and not harm another. Though my knowledge of such a thing is a bit limited, so I would leave it to Nolan to further theorize on such a possibility.”

Clyde paused for a moment, pondering if he had anything else to say, before shrugging.

“Since a few of those would rely upon certain materials being acquired which I am uncertain if we have or could obtain, I will leave you all to ponder said ideas and their viability, and any modification or aid you could perhaps give in making said idea work better. Without further information that is all I can say at this time.”

Inoadar

Inoadar placed no special significance on the single nod he received from one of the Dhani emissaries as he entered. Being the last to enter, a position of prominence by his figuring, he assumed all before him had received a similar courtesy. He did not know the Dhani that had made the gesture, though he might have in human form. He could only say for certain it was neither of the two Dhani with whom he had survived previous encounters.

One was a rattler named Iskessah, the daughter, or niece, or some such, of a "Serpente" family poison master, named Mattieu Kosun, from whom he had sought research notes, figuring they would be going to waste. The reptilian bitch had moved to kill him, but had been forced to settle for throwing him out her window when witnesses made a timely arrival. He hoped she had enjoyed a nice slow death somewhere cold...

The other was a more like-minded constrictor named Kaiyo-something... daija... was it? They at least had worked together, after an initial set-up which had intended to see them set at odds with each other. Having been played against each other had piqued the stubbornness in both of them, to refuse such manipulation and collaborate, despite their basic dislike of each other.

Inoadar had not seen either of them in quite some time, and had not found their absence to cause any sort of void in his life. These Dhani before him now did not provoke any sort of unease, though he was smart enough to extend the common courtesy of a respectful return nod to their contingent.

The Druvin woman, Aemeli, announced the basic purpose of this meeting, and then passed direction to her underling, an Acolyte named Stephen Xeres. He, in turn, passed direction to the group, to begin putting forth what information they had, and make what suggestions they deemed worthy of consideration. Inoadar took an immediate dislike to this pair, thinking them both to be serving as unnecessary political buffering for each other. 'Why does it take two to ask a single question? Especially when that question was simply to ask what WE intended to do to solve the problem.'

Naturally he concealed his disgust with this hedging of status. Aemeli only seemed to be there to give an air of eminence to Stephen. And he was surely only there to take the blame if Aemeli's arrangement here failed to produce results. The poisoner's blanking of his expression served also to cover his apprehension at the sound of the mage, Sullin's, voice. He expected some sort of vague drivel that offered no solution, but would still make it sound as if the firebug was the sole hinge upon which success or failure hung.

He was surprised to find the mage speaking in a fairly no-nonsense manner regarding his capabilities. Inoadar was grudgingly forced to agree with most of what the man said. But after his own interrogation by Ematho, where he had sworn he could kill the monster, he'd had to give serious thought to how he would live up to such a claim. Inoadar now believed he had a viable plan, but it was most assuredly NOT a "brute force" approach. It was rare that poison was ever involved in any such open attack.

He was both annoyed and relieved at Clyde's mention of their association. He thought ungraciously that Mr. Sullins was hoping he had an idea, and that he then would be able to grab a measure of prestige-by-association if the poisoner succeeded. But it also now set the focus of the discussion to hear him out. Eyes, pupil-less, human, and Dhani now turned to him as he took a step forward, clearing his throat.

"In fact, I DO currently have an approach in which I have great confidence. Furthermore, I have all the materials required to see it done. As you know, toxins are my field. What I suggest is poisoning the beast." He held up his hand at several skeptical looks. "Now, please...let me elaborate. I assure you, I am NOT suggesting some extensive dumping of poison into the lake. Your very looks show quite clearly that I do not need to outline to you the many reasons why this approach would fail on several fronts."

He was warming to the attention now, gratified to see that he'd reacquired their credibility with this acknowledgement. "No, what I have in mind is a multi-component toxin, inflicted upon the beast in separate "Packages", so to speak. No one, single dosage would be the killer. But the combined elements, triggered by the beast's own digestive system, would release a massive flood of death from within. By this method, there would be no risk of a contamination of the water upon which we all so fully depend, since no one package would be harmful in and of itself. Also, even once blended into a deadly compound, it would be contained within the beast's body for a sufficient time to break down and lose its potency. I see no way that it could harm the ecosystem of our lake."

He paced a bit before presenting the difficulties he had NOT worked out. "Now, I already have developed what I consider to be a compound with sufficient strength in a relatively small enough dose to succeed easily. What I need is understanding, or counter suggestions, that what will make the best "packages", are bodies sufficiently large to contain the dose, and draw the creature's hunger, while not being too large to dilute the strength of the element contained within. Frankly, I see human...ish bodies as the best vessel for these doses. It will require four such."

Worrying that there might be a reaction to this grim detail, he added quickly, "I also am not sure how we would go about tracking the beast down to set this trap. These are details I hope others can aid with." He knew there were prisoners in the Black Hole that could surely be used in this capacity. But he also hoped these Dhani could show some solidarity by offering "Vessels" of their own. After all, the beast was probably more familiar with them than the surface dwelling humans of the city. He now stepped back to see what others had to say.

It was not surprising that the first to speak was one of the officials in the room. Although only recently returned to Ravok from Sahova, Clyde Sullins was no doubt familiar with the city and, as intelligence would have it, had returned to Ravokian life with relative ease. His new position as an ambassador to the island of arcane research had caused great debate among many as to whether his skills were valuable enough that it was worth the risk of any failure ( and weakness) reaching the ears of Sahova.

It was Vesse who spoke in reply to what she could, “
tracking may not be necessary. The Monssster is not sssmall, and we have often known of its position. The Lake is large enough that it has what can bessst be described as a migratory pattern.” She glanced over to the other two Dhani, who nodded in agreement, “at thisss time, it isss probably in the Eassst of the city. If we were to enter the water, we could detect vibrationsss, knowing where it isss.

The rest, the talk about magic was not something that the Ivyess would be capable of answering, but Stephin stepped in, “
I do not believe you were here at the time, Clyde, nor you, Miss Marin, but we have previously tried to your Water Reimancers in order to... help solve this situation. The conclusion drawn was that no single magic will extinguish this threat.” The use of Magecraft had not occurred to the Black a Sun, and the Acolyte fell silent to consider it, “Cost is not a factor, assuming support can be found in loyal families,” he glanced over at Valerius, who seemed to be the only representative from any affluent family present, “though time is a concern; the Ivyess have shared that the Monster grows.

When Inoadar took the floor, Stephin actively sought to interrupt his words in order to better explain. “
We are aware if your work, Parnell,” (careful to use the alias, as all were) “and that of Verin Rush. But for those who do not share your expertise it is important to recount that the lake itself does not become contaminated by toxins or chemicals. One of Rhysol's gifts to the city was plentiful, safe water, which is why our most esteemed poison crafter knows that simply dumping poison into the lake will have no result.

Behind Stephin was the ever watchful eyes of the Druvin. Though most closely affiliated with Lazerin, Ravok's most notorious interrogator, Aemeli was known to associate with Ematho, and she probably knew best, after Ematho, what horrors Inoadar had suffered when in the depths of the. Black Hole. She knew best, of course, the nature of the Chaon curse that Ematho had placed upon the man. It was amusing to see the workings of the man, and to learn of his mettle personally.

What you suggest is to impregnate an item with this... already developed poison?” The incredulity in the man's voice as he uttered the last three words made it clear that he could not believe Inoadar had developed something without ever having come into contact with the beast. “And attack the Fish with it? You know that contact with the waters will neutralise any agents that you add to it.” But then the poison crafter continued, and all became clear. “Ah. Interesting, you wish to send bait for the creature, offer it sustenance that is poisoned

No, that will not work. ” Yseuse interjected quickly, “Not with anything dead, at least. In the same way that a true land predator would not touch something already dead, this... Fish will also not do such a thing. It likes the hunt. You will only waste your poison if you fill a carcass with it.

Inoadar's smug sense of vindication in how Stephin reversed his attitude was short lived as the Dhani undermined it. “No, that will not work. Not with anything dead, at least. In the same way that a true land predator would not touch something already dead, this... Fish will also not do such a thing. It likes the hunt. You will only waste your poison if you fill a carcass with it.”

Inoadar had not considered that any animal would be so...discriminating in its prey. His many encounters with wolves had left him an impression that all animals were scavengers. Even the Kelvic tiger, Ariella, had not been above devouring an old kill. 'But they were her old kills...' he thought, 'maybe that makes a difference I was not aware of.'

He was about to ask how they could be so sure of such a detail, but stopped himself with the latent logic that, being a marine race, they no doubt had far more in-depth knowledge of the beast's habits. He knew that he was the right track though. He felt as if every other aspect of his strategy was viable. Surely it couldn't be negated by this one detail.

He mentally scrutinized his scheme, finding nothing else wrong with it. Even if it was part of Rhysol's purification of the water to negate toxins, he was sure that each individual element would have no reason to be so affected. Alone, each component was harmless, rendering purification unnecessary. Furthermore, being enclosed in a body would shield it from the lake water, making such cleansing even less likely.

He was all ready to suggest using living bodies, figuring there were surely at least four men in Ravok condemned to death. 'This would simply be the nature of their execution.' But he knew there was no way to place so much of any one compound in a living body without some sort of dire physiological consequence. The beast's instincts would surely register some kind of anomaly. If nothing else, it would probably assume the target was diseased in some way.

Others presented their plans and comments as he mused on some solution. It was all-important to him that he succeed here. The prestige he could gain here was beyond any opportunity he'd ever had. He'd had successes before, but there were always higher authorities stepping in to intercept the distribution of credit and praise. This time, a Druvin was actually present to see who made himself the most valuable. 'So close...By the Voice, I must not fail!'

As usual, he found the voice of Clyde Sullins intruding on his concentration. For a moment, he wanted to openly curse the man for obscuring his focus on what he felt was the only serious strategy yet offered. But he paused...

For one thing, he had not truly been listening to anything any one else HAD offered. It would be far worse to shout down an effective strategy than to simply come up short on his own. For another... 'What was it?...' Clyde's presence was triggering some nearly realized answer to his conundrum. The mage looked around as he spoke, his profile catching a familiar memory. Then he had it...

'The Vilemoss! We gathered Vilemoss at my new shop!...It...could...work!' He could hardly claim to have refined the powdered form to it's highest potency. But he'd made strides. 'Oh yes! The rats I tested it on must have had their appetites increased tenfold! They became starved-looking ghouls, ravished by insatiable hunger! If we "impregnated" a living victim with Vilemoss, and fed HIM to the beast, it would surely eat anything! Dead or not!'

He knew somehow that such a ravaging hunger, manifested in such a massive creature, would become peril incarnate. It would be of paramount importance that they then managed to get the poison-element-bearing bodies placed in the monster's path immediately, or they would be in dreadful danger.

But that just made it all the more exciting...and intriguing. No matter how many of their party perished, it would have no effect on the ultimate dosage of poison. 'As long as the beast eats all of the poisoned bodies before eating me, who cares how many of them die?' he thought unsympathetically towards his fellow committee members. He had difficulty keeping the grin off his face as he waited a second opportunity to speak. He needed a moment to consider his wording to veil the danger he would be placing them all in anyway.
