[Event 41st] Some like it Hot

The auctioneer was a tall wiry man with a mop of dark hair to rival the night’s sky; worn back off his face in a single braid, Kado Goldentide was a man that had worked with all types of animals, from birds to lions. His hands were rough and sturdy, his arms were long and narrow, and his grin was sly; the left side of his mouth lifted in a constant half-smile. Of taller Drykas there were few and clasped in his hand was a small notebook and a little charcoal stick that had been worked down to a piece just shorter than his thumb.

Most of the animals were happy to stand about without any tethering needed, though two or three of the horses were tied, namely the stallions, who kept trying to lash out at one another. Lots of younger Drykas had gathered around hoping to buy an animal from the wild roundup, having already taken the time to view the animals in the days leading up to the event. Some of the clans had even sent a representative to bid on the livestock they had taken a liking too and it seemed no calf, cow, or horse would go unsold today.

The bidding was well underway and children fought through the crowd to get a better view, some of them held up on the shoulders of their parents. “I want the white one!” Seemed to be a common phrase that burst forth from the crowd, though Kado was only interested in looking for raised hands and called out offers of silver.

“Number 361, best offer I have is 60 silver from the woman with the fiery red hair; I’m going to need at least 80 to sell her this morning folks!” He chirped, trying to raise the bidding above the 75 silver the owner was looking to take for her at minimum, “You can keep her till winter and eat like a king! Come on people.”

While Kado was still trying to sell the cow, his wife Ringrose was enjoying a bidding war that had ensued between two men (Shahar Dawnwhisper and Lian Windrunner) over a small, chocolate brown calf known as number 78. “100 silver!” She sang before looking between the two, “ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty!” She grinned with the final bid landing on Lian, “Can I persuade you to go another ten, tall dark and handsome?” She fluttered her lashes at Shahar and scratched the little brown calf behind the ear.

[Event 41st] Some like it Hot

This was her first auction. The cow in question had massive shoulders and quite agreed with the auctioneer of it feeding a pavilion for winter. Correcting her bid to 75 silver. Raising hand and giving voice to the "75" strongly.

She looked to the side as Lian and Shahar seemed to be bidding on the little red fur calf. This whole thing was exciting as she kept in mind what she wanted and what kind of deal she could get.

"Eighty Silver," Pearl spoke up as she raised her hand, looking up and trying to catch the sight of the auctioneer before glancing back over towards where the Zibri was being held. Pearl stood at the back of the crowd, not hidden, but not quite able to see over everyone that was crowded in front of her either.

She wasn't used to doing this sort of thing without Dravite with her. Picking out the Zibri at The Pride had been interesting and she'd felt safer doing such there. Perhaps it was the thrill of the auction that had her bidding so early on an animal she didn't know anything about, but she was anxious as well to show Dravite that she could do this on her own too.

Her head turned towards Pearl and just smiled. The girl inclined her head as those sky blue eyes that scoured the wild cow's confirmation as if that would surrender up some divination of its value. She watched it move a little and fidgeting in a nervous way. The movement let her see the muscle that could become meat.

Regarding these qualities where the cost of buying meat would well be worth the value. "85 silver" Her clear voice pitched out to the Auctioneer.

Pearl strained to see over the crowd, thinking she might have seen Amunet's red hair closer to the front, but she couldn't be quite certain it was her, still she smiled in case it was her. She stepped to the right to see if she could get a closer look at the animal in question. It was about the same size, she thought, as the Zibri she had recently purchased at The Pride, but it's hair wasn't as thick or woolly. There was just something about that particular animal she liked.

She raised her hand once more and called out, "One Hundred Silver," as she caught the auctioneer's attention. Not that it was so difficult to do at this point, since he had more than one bidder now.

The girl craned her head around at Pearl who seemed to want the zibri badly to jump in price like that. That little hand went to her chin as she tapped a finger on the cheek slowly considering the purchase. To let it go or continue bidding. To her it was little more than something for meat stores. Lets see how badly she wanted this cow.

"110 silver." The voice edged up with a raise of her hand.

[Event 41st] Some like it Hot

Postby Naiya on September 16th, 2015, 1:55 am

Naiya placed a gentle hand on Shahar's forearm, cautioning him without drawing much attention to herself. The woman spouted numbers with glee, and if they were not careful she might assume a bid higher than they wanted. Support, encouragement, caution she offered him in the shaping of her hands. They had a good many female zibri at home, and the fur of this one was not so different from the ones they already had. A good addition only if they caught the male she had her eye on.

Her eyes moved away from the zibri Shahar was bidding on, seeking the cow that was still at auction for hardly more than a single calf. The bid hopped back to the voice that was nearer to Naiya and her husband, and Naiya was able to follow the expectant gazes to the speaker this time. Pearl was the healer she had met only last season, her husband too was a new friend. She smiled and waved. Greetings she signed to the woman, invitation, join us?

The bid of the other woman caught her attention. One hundred and ten silver Miza. Still such a low price for such a large cow.

"How much does the cow weigh? She looks like she could feed a small family for an entire season. I'll pay one and fifteen silver." She stuck a teasing tongue out at Pearl, casting her a wink to complete the look. If the woman was too upset by Naiya's up bid, she would pay her the difference. Or perhaps trade her some breeding rights if such a thing were acceptable.

A cow that large would add size to her zibri, and larger cows had easier births. The question was what would happen to the wool, but if she didn't bid, she had no chance to find out.

EditingDespite Naiya's points in Math, I apparently can't do conversions after 8 pm. I edited the price on my bids. Sorry for the trouble.

Time, it seemed, did not close all wounds quickly. The auction had finally come upon Endrykas with hooves and bellows and wiry fur, and many had come to stake their claim on what was offered. Horses and cows, interspersed with the occasional zibri, and the Dawnwhispers had come alongside the rest of the tent city to make bids and chance at the livestock waiting for homes. Shahar’s first target was a young calf with brown hair, since he knew Naiya would want at least some zibri; in terms of importance, however, the brown calf would be a pleasantry. What he really wanted was one of the white calves. Still, zibri were zibri, and the Dawnwhisper herd could always use thickening; he put up his bid and was matched by others.

Snow had accompanied him to the auction, as she did everywhere. She sat at his hip, watching the energy around them with fascination, ignorant of the looks they recieved. Although he had initially been wary of her attendance, Shahar was quickly becoming thankful; her rapidly increasing size seemed to make others uneasy, at least enough that it gave Shahar an extra foot or so of elbow room. It made it easier to breathe.

What Shahar had not anticipated, however, was to be matched by Lian Windrunner.

The bidding war that erupted was somewhat distressing, and Shahar wondered briefly if the Windrunner would take the zibri personally––perhaps it would be best to push just a bit, and gauge how bent Lian was on acquiring the calf.

Sixty, Shahar signed with a nod.

Pearl was so intent on the bidding that she wasn't noticing much else around her, but when she took a moment to glance around the area where she was standing, she was surprised to find Naiya not so far away. She smiled to the woman she had met last season and had formed a budding friendship with and began weaving her way through the others gathered around at the silent invitation she had received to join them, signing in response, gratitude, friendship.

As she was making her way over, she caught the counter-bid of one hundred ten silver and looked up to the auctioneer, whose attention was soon turned away from Pearl, to Naiya when she interjected her bid of one hundred fifteen silver. Pearl lofted a brow just as she heard the bid and then gave a light giggle when she saw Naiya's face and her tongue poking out in jest as she had just upped the bid. "Oh you little sneak," she said to her friend when she approached.

So it was going to be that kind of auction, Pearl's smile grew as she lifted her hand in the air to gain the auctioneer's attention, now that she was standing nearer to Naiya, she didn't expect it would be that difficult for him to notice her, "One hundred twenty silver," was called out before she gave a gentle nudge to Naiya's arm. "How are you? I hope all is well with you. You look like that injury isn't given you a bit of trouble," Pearl's voice was lower now, so as not to interrupt the auction as she conversed with her friend. Never would she be angry for a good old fashioned bidding war, especially with the possibilities that would come if either of them ended up with that particular cow.

Just as she was becoming comfortable where she was, she felt a tug at her elbow, a younger looking boy looking up to her and asking, "Ain't you Doctor Pearl, from The River Flower?"
Pearl smiled to the boy and nodded, "Why yes, I am," she admitted.
"There's a man over there, hollering for Pearl, asking if anyone's seen her," he pointed to the other end of the stalls at the left of the bidding arena.
Rising up on her toes, Pearl peered in the direction the boy was pointing, her hand touching Naiya's arm for balance as she did such. "Roan?" she spoke his name as a question when she saw him across the way.
"That's the man, right there," the boy pointed, confirming Pearl's question.
"Oh dear," withdrawing a silver from her pocket she gave it to the young boy, "for your assistance, thank you," she explained before lifting her hand and catching Roan's attention. The look on the man's face when she claimed his attention set her heart on a sinking path in her chest. "Naiya, forgive me, I must go, it looks to be an emergency," she explained before she took off weaving her way quickly through the crowd to reach Roan.
