While Sylira is by far the most civilized region of Mizahar, countless surprises and encounters await the traveler in its rural wilderness. Called the Wildlands, Syliran's wilderness is comprised of gradual rolling hills in the south that become deep wilderness in the north. Ruins abound throughout the wildlands, and only the well-marked roads are safe.

The evening was beautiful. Kelski couldn't hardly believe the wheel of the year had turned and Summer was just a memory. She'd gathered the books, the coin the guild had earned, and her extensive ledgers of expenses and needs for the guild. Plus she had small pouches for each member the guild employed itself which formed their payroll for the previous season.

Kelski had settled in the bottom floor of the old tower, the one they were slowly laying out the manor house off of. The Gem was fully awake now, invested, and helping them with the expansion. In the mean time, however, she'd been flexing her magical nature and had somehow vanished her walls facing the sea because the lingering warmth of summer hadn't quite turned into the chill of fall yet.

So Kelski sat near the fire, at the big table, with a magnificent view of the coast of Matthew's Bay to one side, a burning hearth at the other side. There was a nice breeze tinted with the spice of conifers and salt air. The table would house everyone and allow them to linger close enough to talk. And there was quite a bit to talk about.

The Gem had let everyone know earlier in the day the meeting would happen at sunset where a meal was laid out. The table was already occupied by Mosa who had the best spot by the fire next to Hattie. The two hags were arguing over how fast the snow would fall while Dessarian's niece was busy rolling her eyes at the pair. The blacksmith was about and so too was the farmer in charge of the crops. He'd been busy, getting in the summer produce and planting winter wheat. More people came, some opting to fill a plate and take various chairs around the room rather than sit at the table.

Kelski felt the pull of family, glad everyone slowly gathering... even Anja's dogs now grown a bit from their puppy states. Kelski smiled, knowing the dogs barging into the room meant Anja wasn't far behind. Vasin had a pouch on the table for his wages, and so too did Dessarian. There were others to be paid out too... and Kelski would see to their wages tonight as well.

But they had things to talk about. Important things. The Sea Eagle glanced down at her notes. The Guild had turned a profit. It was a miracle, but it had. She credited it completely to everyone's hard work. And they deserved something for it. Kelski just wasn't sure what to give them.

She fingered her ledger.

18 GM x 91 days = 1,638 GM for the Season and a total of 3,188 GM for the books total added to their startup funds. It wasn't a phenomenal amount, but they were just getting started. Painted Sky had done well also, bringing in a total of 4,368. She'd donated part of her income to the guild since she felt it was necessary as the Guildmaster. But it gave them some options for the future, options the whole guild needed to discuss.

Kelski was all for expanding the guild. They had multiple options for doing so, but she wanted to put it to a vote. If the members wanted the money paid out, she could do that as well. Some of her options were simple. They needed a real stables and not just a pavilion to house the horses in. It would cost them 3,000 GM and house up to six horses initially with room to expand next season. The stables she had drawn up would also be housing a small smithy. It was one of those things Kelski hoped Crylon could look at and do a better job of drafting past her awkward sketching.

Due to the resources and influence available to the guild, Kelski would be able to arrange for an enhanced structure for housing and caring of their horses. The stables offered larger stalls as well as higher quality facilities overall. It includes wood or stone flooring covered in wood shavings from their own lumber mill. The stable would also offer fresh hay and independent water supplies for each mount. The troughs are stone and there is a small fireplace included in the structure for warmth. There are small turnouts outside of the stable that allow for mounts to exit their stalls while still being contained in 20 x 40 foot paddocks. Houses up to six mounts and requires one groom to tend to mounts. One large area for all the goats was also included in the stable, replacing what used to be a plan for an included smithy which they didn't need as they'd had one built last season.

The other plan was for a ship. The group needed both. But now that the dock was done, a ship was far more feasible. She'd checked prices in the city at the shipyards, and they could have a Sea Runner built for them that would cost roughly 6,000 GM. She didn't mind throwing her income into that project to get a ship put together. It would be a slimmed-down fishing boat re-designed for speed and use flexibility. A single mast, with a lateen rig that allowed for great maneuverability. A strictly coastal and shallow water ship, A Sea Runner is often found in use as a courier ship, quick delivery merchant boat and even a swift explorer. The compact lower deck serves as a modest cargo hold while the main deck sports a single enclosed cabin with a small crew area. It isn't the most comfortable ship but what it lacks in comfort it makes up for in diverse use. It supports a single light mount and automatically comes with a ballista. It took a crew of five, which meant recruiting more people for the guild, or else some of them needed to take up sailing. It wasn't cheap, but it was something she'd throw on the table.

There was also profit sharing, which she was willing to do. And there were other options open to hire workers from Zeltiva to build. Adding the sawmill had been a stroke of genius. They were able to harvest the wood they cut down, turn it into raw materials they could use, and she'd frugally sold the excess lumber to both the svefra and people in Zeltiva. It worked beautifully and had added to the income the group had received.

Thinking ahead, Kelski had made multiple copies of her notes, listing her suggestions for their profits, the costs of those suggestions, and had left them laying about the table for people to browse through. It was easier, sometimes, for people to make a decision on what they wanted done when they could look and see for themselves.

Once everyone was gathered, Kelski started the meeting.

"You'll see laying around that we've made a decent profit. It's not absolutely astonishing, but as we grow in numbers and we get more work, we will raise that profit up I predict. We have some income now, and a nice bit of coin in reserve. I've proposed some options for spending it. I myself turned a profit with Painted Sky, so that income is at our disposal as well. I'd like you all to look over the options and make suggestions for the allocation of these funds... if you see something on the sheet you like, speak up. If you have other ideas, I'm more than open to hear them." Kelski added, picking up one of the sheets and waving it around so people knew what she was talking about.

Several of the members were already looking over the finances with curious looks on their faces, some decisive, some indecisive. Kelski looked forward to what everyone would have to say.

Dess came down the stone stairs, wearing a fresh shirt and pants. The day's work had left them stained with dirt and sweat, and he decided to make himself a bit more presentable for the gathering. As he descended, his eyes were first cast out to the landscape revealed by the missing section of wall. They were approaching his favorite season, though the lingering warmth of summer was still welcomed. He could see a few stragglers making their way to the tower.

Next he scanned the room, firstly finding Kelski, though he sensed where she was before his seeking eyes found her. He caught her eye and offered her a smile. Once among the tables, he greeted Mosa and Hattie with a nod, then his cousin Darcee with a kiss to the head. Next he hugged Lynneah and Keesha. The remnant of the Damazar manor sat together, near the bag of coin Kelski indicated as Dess's. A nod or a smile was offered to others as his eyes met theirs. He gave one of the Drykas's hounds a pat as it stopped to sniff him.

Dess saw that Lynneah had one of Kelski's note sheets in her hand, and peered at it with her. The woman noticied him looking over her shoulder and playfully nudged him. "Get your own." The former Damazar servant teased, then shoved the paper at Dess. "Kidding, here." Dess knew the basic numbers, the subject coming up in previous conversations between he and the guild mistress. But the suggested options and costs were something he needed to look over.

Kelski opened the meeting and threw the floor open for discussion. After a moment of silence, Dess piped up. "Looks like the first thing to decide is if we use the profit for expansion or for sharing among us." He posed. "I throw my vote to expansion. We have made a great start in just one season, but there is a lot more to do." He gestured to the note sheet.

Dess knew maybe not everyone would agree. The newer hires may not have the same enthusiasm for the Demesne as those who had been around since the beginning. He also knew that some still split their time between the Demesne and Zeltiva, and maybe preferred the coin. He didn't begrudge anyone who voted for the profit sharing, everyone had worked hard and deserved it. But for Dess, the Meraki was now everything to him, and the Empyreal Demesne was his home. He wanted to posture the Demesne for continued success.

As usual, Anja had been up at dawn. After his usual early morning routine of meditation, prayer, and soulmist creation, the Drykas had checked in at the tower to see if there were any specific tasks that needed doing today. He had quickly learned that there would be a guild meeting later at dusk, and the man had headed off to tend to the animals, mind deep in thought. The majority of the day had been spent continuing his training with the twins and caring for the horses and goats. When Syna began to fall, and the sky and sea shone and brilliant violet and crimson, Anja whistled for the dogs and made his way back to the tower. Morte found his way to the Drykas' shoulder, and even Maisa seemed interested enough in the proceedings to follow. When the pups realized where they were headed, they raced ahead of him at full tilt. Anja grinned and let them run. Even a full day's work didn't seem to have temper their wild spirits.

Anja glanced at the missing wall with the slightest look of intrigue, but after close to a year of living with the Gem there were few structural things that could surprise him. Anja brushed the wall of the tower and whispered a greeting to the sentient structure, then warmly said a few words of greeting to the guild. Truth be told, he was ravenous from the day's work, but he allowed himself only a few handfuls of finger food before he glanced over the plans Kelski had drawn up. While he read over them, the pups ran around greeting everyone and Maisa found a place to graze just outside of the missing wall where she could comfortably catch everything that went on during the meeting. Anja read the plans aloud to Morte, who couldn't read, and traced the rudimentary sketches with his finger tips and chewed his lower lip.

The trace of the man's finger tips stopped at the design for the stable, and a wry smile played across his face. "I agree with expansion," Anja chuckled, giving a short nod of agreement to Dessarian. "And perhaps I'm biased, but my vote is for the stables." Anja's fingers tapped once more against the sketch. "The horses tolerate the Pavilion, but they'll be much happier with a proper stable. And if they're happy, then their work productivity will increase." Anja's finger paused on the notes about the amenities involved in the stables. "It looks like the time involved to take care of them will decrease too. Leaving more room for other things."

Anja looked up from the notes and stuffed his hands in his pockets. "I'm not denying the ship will be useful too. But I feel that caring for the creatures in our care now is more important. We can always get a ship next season."

[The Meraki] Stars Align & Minds Meld

Postby Wa'Djinnabi on September 30th, 2019, 8:31 am

The beginning of fall was always an exciting time, it heralded the rains and snows of this strange Sylira region. While they hadn't started changing just yet, the leaves would start to shift from green to red and gold. Something that he had never encountered until he made his journey north from eyktol. But largely, it meant that the summer heat was gone and he could expect many days of shivering in the cold.

Wa'Djinnabi of Ahnatep settled into a comfortable silence with Dawson as they made their way back to the beginnings of the manor house. Djinn had found a friend in the older farmer, Dawson. He was a pragmatic fellow who loved his job. Djinn admired those traits, though he could not exactly emulate them. As the two entered into the tower, Kelski and a few others were waiting for them even as others were coming in from the chilling evening air or from the upper reaches of the tower.

There were surprisingly a lot of faces he did not recognize. Perhaps not new, but definitely people he hadn't had the chance to get to know. His musings and thoughts, and truthfully, how little he spent inside the tower, made him completely overlook the wall that should be there but wasn't. Instead of mentally noting it, his tired mind and body simply settled into his chair next to Dawson, having politely forgone food. He would not feel comfortable enough to eat until he had a chance to wash up. He folded his extra sets of arms into his chair as he took up a copy of the summer's ledger and kelski's proposals. It must have taken a lot of effort to get this done, he examined the list of numbers and options. Yes, even just copying this must have been at least a day's worth of work.

In regards to the actual ledger and numbers, he was poor with his sums and numbers. He could do them, but he would be no mathematician. In that regard he would trust in Kelski's skills, but the transparency was nice. People were milling about and getting settled in as he went over the options. He was somewhat indecisive, profit sharing or expansion or building a boat? They all sounded like great ideas. If he had more profit, he could spend money on his alchemical experiments, but the other two would help the collective group. He had put off his alchemical experiments so he might as well put if off more.

His musings were cut short when Kelski got the meeting started, wrapping up much of his thoughts concisely. He nodded along with her as he glanced back to the sheet of parchment in front of him. A man about his age started the discussion. He looked him up and down, the man had a malnourished look to him, but he was cheerfully interacting with people who obviously knew him well. He nodded at his reasoning and Djinn kept glancing at his figures on the paper.

He supposed he would also throw in his lot with the expansion. Djinn had made a comfortable home and routine out of the Merkai. Besides, it made sense to reinvest back into a venture to make it grander then before. His musings were again cut short by a wet nose and a warm snout pushing into his papers. Djinn smiled and stroked the head of the dog, the beast very interested in his scent to the point of freezing up and sniffing him intently. After a moment the dog sat on his, her? Haunches and looked up at him with a canine grin and tongue lolling. He slipped a hand under her chin and scratched before returning to the topic at hand. Seeing his inattention, the pup wandered off to get someone more invested in her presence to give her pets.

Djinn tried to catch Kelski's eye and nodded towards the human who started the vote. He went on as soon as she focused on him saying in a soft but projected voice, "He also has my vote." And was content with not elaborating. If he had any bright ideas, he would bring them up of course. But for now, he was content in letting others drive the conversation.

Expansion it was.

That was something Kelski could get behind. The ship could come later. Usually life provided anyhow. She glanced between the figures at the table and looked thoughtfully at them. “We can afford the stables outright. It’s a good investment and it will ensure we have transportation by land – if we clear trails – and shelter for our food animals through the winter, which indeed is coming fast. I can get a crew in here to build it during this season… though The Gem has her own ideas and wants the stables to be part of her structure itself.” Kelski said, pulling out sketches she had laying to one side.

The drawing showed an expansive multiple level manor house that had a wing off one end that ended up being a big enormous balcony patio situation. Beneath, at ground level, was an open area that would equate to an animal shelter that could be flung open to get air in the summers and tightened down to get shelter during the winter. Individual stalls could be assembled in the open area or the place could act like a free-ranging arena for the horses and goats to wander. There was even a provision for the goats and horses to be sectioned off but still free-range. There was a courtyard with gates, and it was easy enough for the tower location to be built towards the stables and the two to come together and join in one structure.

“I like flexible plans.” Kelski said, showing off what she had mocked up for the manor stables. “This way, our animals are close at hand and we do not have to worry about crossing expansive land to get to where the barn is to care for them during winter storms or other forms of danger. We can have a smithy off the far side of the stable, of which the forge from that would help keep the structure headed in the winter. It’s overall safer.” Kelski said, then moved back so everyone could look at the diagram.

“Is there any agreement? Concern? Anyone want to add anything to a stable situation?” She asked cautiously, wondering if this was actually a topic anyone was interested in. She knew once their grounds were built and things were done, that she could indeed move on to more interesting things, like everyone taking jobs.

She waited for folks to speak, then moved the meeting on.

“We’ve started getting some jobs coming in. I’ve taken most everything that’s come our way. Most of it has been for identification purposes – like what is this item?” But we have some bigger potential hirings. We have a group of archaeologists that are exploring a ruin on the far side of the harbor. They’d like a mage with auristics and one good at investigating things to be on hand. I’m not sure if we have someone available, but every one of you should have your auristics up and running if you don’t have it polished already. We will be getting a lot of these jobs in the future. I think shielding, auristics, and a broad spectrum of all sorts of magics would be useful because that’s what I've been getting requests for. Some of them I’ve been able to just take a day and fly off and look around for someone, but those jobs don’t pay much. They are, however, building a reputation. If we get those going and build a reputation, we’ll get bigger jobs. I have a couple of assignments that are pending too. I wanted to see if anyone was interested.” Kelski said carefully, not sure who would like to do what sort of work. She’d get a better feel for it as time passed on, but until then, she had to offer what she was given and take the jobs no one else wanted.

“We have a building in Zeltiva that belonged to a mage. He’s passed away and his family wants us to search the property for him for hidden caches and what’s rumored to be his lab. It pays well and there’s a bonus if we produce results or even find evidence of off sight locations. That one is open to anyone.” Kelski said softly, pulling out what looked like cards that had jobs written on them. She shuffled the cards and looked thoughtful.

“Missing teenager. She’s been suspected of running away. Supposedly she’s in the wildlands hereabouts somewhere, between town and where our Demesne is. I took the job and this one has a priority to start immediately. Does anyone want it?” She asked, tossing the card out onto the table for someone to grab. If no one did, she’d start immediately. “The details are on the card... name, description, age, what she was wearing, etc,” Kelski added, then pulled the last card.

“Ship stolen – probably long gone. I have no idea if we can track it, and I don’t know enough about ships and haven’t traveled enough to perhaps ask the Svefra. I feel like this is more something they should ask the Svefra about, but they can’t because its probably the Svefra that stole it. Small pleasure craft, twenty five-footer, not a casino just a plain nicely made Zeltiva vessel. Stolen right out of the port. I felt like the man who said it was stolen had more to say but wasn’t speaking? I haven’t said yes but I haven’t said no yet. I told him I’d let him know after this meeting today. Anyone interested?” Kelski asked, tossing that job card out on the table too.

She wasn’t sure how these ‘jobs’ would go over, but it was the reason they founded the guild… to preserve the magic, to spread the word that mages weren’t terrible, and to start doing some good in the community. It felt more like she had opened an investigative service, but the problem was they all lacked a lot of magical knowledge they needed to do what they wanted to do. So to pay the bills and keep everyone fed, they needed to take jobs like this at first.

“I know this isn’t ideal. But we really need to get some income going and our name out there. If we help the right people, have some successes or even let people know what happened to missing family if we can find them, then we are that much closer to our greater goal and the bigger jobs we aren’t equipped to handle yet. If you are remotely interested, or have ideas about any of these bites, please accept them. If they are not what you can handle, just simply don’t. We can work as a group, solo, or even in pairs or teams. I don’t care. But I think we need to at least attempt these things. I can’t do all three alone… they are bigger jobs than just singular missions.” Kelski added, offering smiles all around.

She totally would understand if people turned them down, but she did feel they were valuable opportunities and shouldn’t be overlooked.

[The Meraki] Stars Align & Minds Meld

Postby Crylon Stonecraft on November 3rd, 2019, 10:14 pm

Crylon was late.

He hurried on his way to the meeting, a small stitch forming in his side. He had known to be there, and when, though when the sun set was a less than specific time. Or had it been at sunset? Regardless he had lost track of time and had ended up rushing to get to the meeting a bit late rather than early. Still he was dressed in his somewhat nicer clothes he had purchases for a prior party at the Gem, minus the mask. Sandals, along with a pair of dark pants and an open chested and armed vest to let his left arm "breath". Not that it could not be covered, but more like... Covering it would be akin to a bird of prey covering its colorful plumage.

It was his first official day among the site, and working for the group. While he had visited shortly the season before, today really had been his first day. And so he had spent it settling in, finding space, moving things about, and doing a once over on the work that had been done since he was last there.

Checking buildings, living or normal, for damage or possible repair work. Spots for planned things, or where nothing was planned but perhaps he could plan something.

And so lost in thought and his tour of the sites of the place, he had lost track of time.

As he rushed inside, stumbling to a stop, he found people were already meeting and talking. He was late.

Trying to be unobtrusive Crylon sidled inside, finding a seat and picking up one of the papers from the table.

While he was not fluent in the common it was written in, he was a bit better at reading numbers and found those a bit easier. It seemed to be a listing of funds or assets or such, and some notes related to things not yet made. Which, listening to everyone talking, seemed to be the topic at hand.

He spent a few moments looking around, seeing many faces he did not recognize, listening as he read the paper.

One man he did not think he knew spoke of their choices, expanding or splitting the excess money. He seemed to think towards the former. This seemed reasonable to Crylon, one had to spend money up front so that more money could be made later.

One could go out with an axe and cut a tree, sell the wood and spend it. Or one could save up and hire another to help, or to build a saw will to process the wood, and make more money. It was a choice between now or later, now something or later more. And it seemed logical enough to go with the latter.

The next man, someone Crylon had met but whose name he could not recall, the human with many animals, also seemed intent on spending the funds. Namely on building a horse house, a stables.

He too seemed logical in his reasoning of why.

Crylon shivered at the mention of the boat, something he did not like but was trying to learn to tolerate. He did not like the open water, feared it, but was trying to learn to tuck that fear away and overcome it. But still, he did not like the thought of it. And yet... And boat could help with trade, getting things to or from the nearby city. And having ties to Zeltiva could only be of use.

As more spoke there seemed more agreement. Next from a seeming human but with an abundance of limbs. Hee puzzled on this for a moment, before shrugging in his Isurian nonchalant fashion and passing on to more important things. Namely the numbers.

He was decent with numbers, needing them to measure and plan and cost and build. He was by no means skilled with them, but he was neither a newly taken in student of numbers trying to understand which number meant what.

When Kelski took out some plans though, ah then his mind began to sing. While he was a fair shake at numbers, he was far fairer at understanding designs. He could tell at a glance that a fair bit of time had been spent on them.

When no one objected to the initial plans she presented, Kelski then moved on to other things. Jobs, as she called them. Work for hire wanted done by the guild.

Identifying items. Something he could perhaps do some day, once he was decent with Auristics.

A dig site, wanting someone skilled with reading Aura's and doing investigations. Also something he had a bit of knowledge of, but not much. And he did not want to go off bungling a job he did not have the proper skills for.

A building, with hidden depth. Hidden compartments, rooms, and even a lab hidden within. Buildings. Design. This, perhaps, was something he could do with his current skills.

A lost not adult not child, between the city of Zeltiva and their own locale. Not truly within his skills.

A ship, lost at sea, taken from the dock. Requiring... Going at at sea. No.

Reaching forward Crylon picked up the card with some details about the house job.

“Is something I do, maybe, of having skills to do. Know buildings. Is maybe... Know what missing, in building if look about. Though could maybe use help from someone with... Better sight magic. Can maybe point in right direction, but own sight magic, knowing magic, thing, not strong.”

Pausing, Crylon gave anyone else the chance to request the job, before more firmly taking the card. He supposed if he took it he would need to speak to Kelski further about anything she knew. What kind of mage the man was, his magic, anything he should be looking for, and other things she might not have mentioned.

He did however have another thought. Raising his hand to indicate he wanted to speak, which his being slight of stature as an Isur was not quite as effective as a human with their longer limbs, he did seemed to catch a few eyes from the motion and make it clear he wanted to speak.

“Is also thought, on things to build. Of speaking of future, also vote for spend. Spend now, expand now, so more do later. Though thought also, another idea. Maybe for later. Is think about build place to repair boats? Nothing big, not like Zeltiva, but small repairs, maybe for passing ships. Nough get back to city. Could give passing by reason to stop by, if can stop and do small things.”

“And maybe once here, if here, look for other things can offer. Get in... Door so speak. Is thoughts anyone on this, maybe down... Road? I know little, of work wood. Not really of build, repair, ships. Is anyone know of work wood better, or build, fix, ships, better? Is maybe work with? And learn to do later?”

Postby Wa'Djinnabi on January 27th, 2020, 10:05 am

Wa'Djinnabi was nodding along, the warmth of the fire and the post-summer breeze giving him a muzzy smile to go along with the conversation. He heard the word "Auristics" and perked up, he nudged his neighbor and asked, "So what is Auristics?" Dawson scowled at him, trying to hear what the rest of the others were saying. "How would I know?" He hissed, "Ask a mage." Djinn shrugged and endeavor to ask about it later. But if he had to guess by the context of the situation he would say it probably had something to do with seeing. Could be an interesting idea to explore later down the line.

It was an interesting prospect, doing magical jobs. He would love to help, but he did not know all that he could do to help. He was a farmer, he was also an alchemist. He simply did not have the skill set to do any of the jobs that Kelski put on offer. It actually highlighted another problem. Provided that he fully revived his own magic, how would he get paying customers. The crafting materials he could make were expensive. Maybe not in actual monetary value, at least not all the time, but in the time, effort and danger that went into making these exotic goods. It was not really an issue in the desert, his master handled the business and the materials, he just helped with running the circle or helped crafting some of the more simple chargers. Something to think about.

In any event he reached out and tugged one of the small pouches to himself, "These are for us, yes?" He asked with a smile. If Kelski said no, he would simply put it back, but if she said yes, Djinn figured he would just tuck it into his belt. He didn't need to count the amount. He trusted the kelvic magi. He leaned back and pondered the job situation. He did not have much to add, he would have to pass for this season, maybe next season or in winter. It also depended on what sort of mission came up. That said he was more then willing to do errands or help out those who did choose to do any of the missions. But with the crops doing so well and the harvest looming soon, he figured that he would not have much time to devote to such tasks.

He let the others weigh in afterwards, the flow of conversation slowly lulling him to sleep. He leaned back and nodded along with the speakers. He figured he could close his eyes, they were burning a bit and were very heavy. He settled further into his chair and listened in as he rested his eyes. Surely they wouldn't fault him for just listening in. Though, despite all efforts to the contrary, the eypharian was softly snoring. It was not a disruptive sound, if anything, easily overlooked. And yet, it was obvious what had happened.

(feel free to wake him up if you'd like, he will awaken if jostled)
