Syliran Order Recruitment Office

Postby Deklan Enyalios on July 12th, 2014, 6:24 pm

Deklan had made it to what he expected to be his destiny. He had decided that becoming a knight would propel him into the fame and fortune that he wanted, and needed. Power was what Deklan wanted. Ultimate power to do what he wished whenever he wished it. Yet, it would be a long time before that power was his and he knew that. But that would not stop his ambition, nothing would ever stop his ambition unless it was death. The young human would take over this order and become the best of the best...Slyria would be his. Deklan moved into the recruitment office, his muscular body moving swiftly and silently. "I wish to join the Knights." he spoke, his deep voice resonating off the walls and his piercing blue eyes watching the man in front of him."I want nothing more than to pledge my soul and myself to the order and this prestigious knighthood. I have experience with the longsword and the bow, but no formal training, Ser. I also have experience with the riding of horses, and the use of a shield." he said with a nod."I'm also a powerful leader of men. I know what they expect in a leader ,and I am that." Deklan said confidently."I am willing to do whatever the order dictates me to do, Ser."

Erik frowned at the whelpling before him, his eyes weighing the words she seemed so eager to say. The young woman had simply started talking, with no prompting or invitation. When she finally finished speaking, rambling off the her supposed qualifications, Erik let the silence draw out and examined the squire to be and how she handled uncertainty. Did she fidget? Or did she remain smooth and uncaring?

Erik absentmindely scratched the air where his arm would be if it was not missing. The limb always seemed to itch when rain was coming, but a look outside would have shown a clear day. A shame really, the day was not too hot and seemed perfect for leisurely activities in the courtyards. But the elderly knight was stuck behind his desk for the time being.

After a moment he cleared his throat and looked at her seriously, "Interesting... A Stalinsa you say? Who is your sire, Ehren?" He then shook his head, "Actually, it doesn't matter. All are equal under law of Syliras and so are all candidates given equal opportunity to join the knighthood. But tell me, why do you wish to join the order? What really drove you to be here in my office?"

Ehren stood with her hands clasped loosely behind her back, outwardly cool as a cucumber under Ser Erik’s gaze. The silence bothered her little, save for the fact it gave her mind all the more time to pick apart her current situation. A particular keenness sparkled behind her eyes, hinting at the network of silent thoughts that slowly sprawled, appraisingly, behind them. Perhaps she had been too bold. Well, even if she had it was too late now. Far better to buck up than shrink away or retreat. The error, had there really been one and not just some self perceived notion of inherent, inbred offense, was her own; she would carry it’s consequence with dignity.
Of course the knight first enquired about her surname. They always did. And Ehren’s eyes closed momentarily with the weariness of one far too old for her short years. The man continued, however, and whether by true virtue of character or for some other more common reason, chose not to press the issue. For that Ehren was quite grateful. And, silently, purveyed as much with a gentle smile which lifted a certain measure of the jaded ennui from her features. Equal. There was a naïve sparkle to the word that still whispered to her guileless youth. Was that why she wanted to join the knights, to be equal? Wasn’t it?
With a gentle sigh the young woman met Ser Erik’s gaze, an arresting air of genuine authenticity gently radiating from the light beneath their depths, “I want…” the woman-child paused, her hands finally dropping from their clasped position to wring ever so slightly as she searched for exactly the right words. “I want to be something better than I am.” Better than a bastard, the words rang out in her head as her hand came to rest on the hilt of her sword, encircling and caressing its curvature for comfort. “Anyone can learn a trade, or set up a stall and offer the public goods and services. But to dedicate one’s life to the cause of the people, of the city, transcends all that all together. Offering service and leading a life of service are different, as I’m sure you know. And it is the latter from which I seek a sense of fulfillment outside of myself. And I know that there are other ways to do so, but I feel simply that they are not right for me. I do not think I would ever make a good priestess, or healer… or even prostitute. Caring for people, living in service to people, in any of those manners is beyond me. But holding the peace, as difficult as I logically know it must be, I think I could do. That is not to say that I expect my life, should it be forfeit during my service, to be celebrated, or even remembered. But, I would at least have a chance at feeling as if my life was used for something…. As silly and naïve as I know that sounds. I know that I may well die, probably not even on a battlefield, thinking that it was all a hopeless waste, but at least I will have had a chance…” Here again Ehren paused and gave a gentle shrug, a soft smile, “I guess that’s it when I really get down to it. I just want a chance.”
Ehren lowered her hands and clasped them before her. She had said more than needed really, and may or may not have made a total fool of herself. But then, that was what she came here for, wasn’t it? To go balls to the wall, to fling herself into the eye of the storm, to lay it all out on the table and finally prove to herself if she could earn her keep. Raising her chin ever so slightly she spoke very softly, but firmly. “I don’t know my sire, Ser. The name is one thrust upon me by my salacious mother. That is not to say that I seek to find any man among your rank. But, if I am indeed to be among your rank, I might as well be honest. I have lived the entirety of my short life defined by the words and actions of others. I come to you finally seeking the chance, just a chance, to live as I would live, defined only by my own actions and abilities – or lack thereof if the case turns out to be such – and be judged, truly judged, only by my rightful superiors and Sylir himself.” Finally the young woman fell silent, once again calm and cool, unshaken even by the brutality of her own honesty. That was it. All there was. Either it was good enough, or it wasn’t. And if it be the latter, then she would accept her incompatibility, from now until the end of her days, in the resigned knowledge that she had at least, for one time in her life, been true to herself.

Garland stood outside the door into the recruitment center. He was nervous, he had his family's sword on him for luck. He never knew his parents, and he was raised in an orphanage. He took a deep breath, and knocked on the door, before walking in. He stood by the door until he was called over. He looked at the old scarred knight behind the desk. He swallowed the lump forming in his throat. There were other people there, probably more recruits. He stepped up towards the desk. "Hello Ser. I-I would like to apply."

Erik nodded slowly, expressing that yes, he understood the things Ehren was talking about. A fascinating creature. "It seems that you indeed have something that the knighthood could use." He told the woman, his eyes glittering with the hint of a smile, "Just as you said, anyone can learn a trade, but in the same token, anyone can pick up a sword to fight. One might argue that the knighthood provides the service of keeping the peace. But no... you and I both know that its more than that."

The limbless man stood up and stretched his remaining arm before turning around and lumbering over to the window. Without turning he spoke to Erhen once more, "You must realize that if you become a knighthood, you become its property. There is no quitting from the knighthood. It becomes your life, even when you should otherwise be dead." He looked down at the hole where his arm should be and then turned to face Ehren, "I do not say this to discourage you, I just hope to let you know before you take any steps towards becoming one of us."

"Your family, whatever the circumstances have no bearing on your ability to become a knight. You will be trained and tested on your own merit. Just as everyone else is. If you truly want a chance, you have it." The grizzled man's somber expression then lightened and he strode to stand next to squire to be. "Now we just need to-" The man was cut off when Lord Loren Dyres himself strode into the office. "Ah, seems the Grandmaster saved us a trip. What can I do for you Ser?" The elder knight saluted to the ruler of the city who then saluted back, glancing briefly in Ehren's direction. "This a new recruit Sergeant?"

Erik nodded and grinned, "I think you'll like this one. She has heart."

However Loren shook his head, "I am a bit busy at the moment, so I'll let you field this one. I trust your judgement. I just came to talk to Petri; I was told he was here but apparently not. Oh well, a hunting I must go. Farewell. And welcome to the Order..." Loren trailed off, addressing Ehren and Erik prompted with a quick "Ehren."

"Ah, welcome Ehren. We can always use a dedicated soul. May Sylir watch over you."

With the Grandmaster gone Erik turned to Ehren. "Here, take this to the squire dormitories located in the Bittern District, second tier." The old knight gave the newly made squire a note, "Your Patron will arrive at the indicated room two bells before sun down. In the mean time it is recommended that you pick up gear from the quartermaster, armour, a weapon, and such." He started to walk towards the door and stopped, then turned to look at Ehren. "You have your chance now. No need to live in the shadow of your family's name, it never would have helped you anyways." He gave her an encouraging grin, "Welcome to the Order."

Garland

Ser Erik Rainstrom looked up from his paperwork as a young man walked up. His torso twisted as he reached over and slid papers into a neat pile. Years of practice without an arm gave him the skill to do this expertly. He then capped his ink well and nodded. "Welcome, you've come to the right place." Erik gave a thoughtful look over the teen, weighing him against some invisible scale in his mind. "Have a seat, what's your name, son? Why do you want to become a knight?" He offered a hand to the wooden, straight backed chair in front of the desk.

Syliran Order Recruitment Office

Postby Rykanis Dakshata on August 30th, 2014, 12:39 pm

91 Summer 514

Rykanis had only just arrived in Syliras on this day. Already he was looking for something further to do, a job, work, an activity. It was simply who he was, almost an innate animal instinct as a Akalak. He could not stand still, could not let his body whither away with disuse.

Such action would be tantamount to treason on the part of any true Akalak. He'd been in Syliras before, mostly in passing and heading on to other places. But this time he had decided he should perhaps stick around, perhaps see if this was a place to exist for a time.

Over his years he'd tried his hand at many jobs, been to many places. He knew of the Syliran knights, as did anyone who'd been to or even near Syliras. He'd never before considered joining the knighthood, but perhaps it was a choice in line with who he was.

Once he made his motive clear, Rykanis was quickly directed to the recruitment office of the knighthood. As always he had a lakan at either side, the curved shortish blade resting silently in their scabbards. As always he was ready for a fight. Another innate instinct of a true Akalak. To always be ready to protect oneself, to protect those who needed it, and to protect ones home.

Upon making his way inside, he found the man in charge, raised himself to his full height of just over seven feet, and stared the man right back without flinching. His height and his skin tone made it quite clear he was not a human.

"Hello. I am Rykanis Dakshata, of Riverfall. I am here to state my interest in joining the knighthood. What trials of blade or fist must I do to prove my worth for membership?"

A accent would be clear in his voice, and in the mannerism of his speech, but his meaning and words were clear enough.

-Only when you truly understand the darkness, will you not fear it.

He nodded and sat down across from the one-armed knight. "My name is Garland. I want to make a difference. I don't know the details, but I think my parents were killed by bandits and I was saved by the knights. I owe it to them." He said. He felt his nerves tense up.

He took a deep breath. "I believe I have the physica skills and qualifications to join. I want to prove it if I can." The time seemed to slow down, his palms started to sweat. He tapped his feet nervously.

Garland

Erik gave Garland a meaningful nod. It was not uncommon for squires seeking revenge from bandits and rogues by joining the knighthood. It made a certain amount of sense, the knights clothed, fed and trained the squires and the squires would eventually meet the people responsible for their heartache on the battlefield. "I see. You need to understand that if you join the knights, you become their property. There is no quitting from the knighthood; once you're inducted your only way out is death or retirement. As a squire you can change your mind at any time of course, but if you take the step to become a knight... You belong to Syliras' " He gave the lad another meaningful look, trying his best to impress upon Garland the serious of his request.

"If you understand this... then take this" He pushed a letter across his desk and waited for garland to take it. "The letter has your room at the squire dormitories. Your patron will meet you there at noon. In the mean time I suggest you meet with the quartermaster and get some basic gear. Armour, and weapon and so on. It will be on loan and thus you will need to give it back should you ever change your mind."

"Let me be the first to welcome you to the knighthood." Erik said with a grin.

The scarred and grizzled knight looked up at the violet man towering before him with a bit of squint. Erik frowned a moment before his mind registered the words coming from the Akalak's lips. "Welcome Rykanis Dakshata." The man inclined his head out of respect, "Syliras thanks you for your interest. The knights are always thankful for the aid that Riverfall and his people bring to us. But tell me, for what reason do you come to my desk. Beyond your interest of course, what sparked this interest?"

The one armed knight then drew out paper and began to write, carefully and deftly as he awaited the tall gave his answer. "Do you have any training in the arcane arts?" Erik asked as well.

Garland took the letter with pride. "I understand. I'll fight for Syliras with my life." He nodded and walked out. He looked at the letter with the key and room number.

"Now where's the dormitory...?"

"Welcome Rykanis Dakshata."

Rykanis nodded once, acknowledging the greeting from the man before him.

"Syliras thanks you for your interest. The knights are always thankful for the aid that Riverfall and his people bring to us. But tell me, for what reason do you come to my desk. Beyond your interest of course, what sparked this interest?"

Rykanis paused for a moment, analyzing the man, his face, and his words. It was clear by looking at him he'd seen many a battle, and had not led an idle life. It was also interesting to hear him speak of Riverfall, another sign that his kind were well known and respected here. Always a good sign, as opposed to them not even knowing what an Akalak is.

"I suppose many things. I think I could aid Syliras in many ways. I could use my skills in a purposeful manner. I often see what others miss. And there is nothing wrong of battle or the hunt, of bashing a few heads that deserve it. And when strength of arm isn't the answer, I am not averse to the more subtle responses. And I respect the knighthood, for their strength and discipline."

Having been raised in Riverfall, Rykanis was of course knowledgeable of Wysar, and respected him highly, even if he worshiped Akajia more often. But it was certain that the knighthood represented many of the tenants that Wysar stood for. Though if the man made this connection, and understood what he meant on the latter bit, would depend upon how well he knew common Riverfallian deities.

"Do you have any training in the arcane arts?"

Rykanis looked back at the one armed man, and paused once more. For a moment he tilted his head, pondering over his words, before answering.

"No. I've focused on strength of arm, and skills of the body, not magic. I suppose I've considered learning some once or twice, but I never have. Perhaps I'm the better for it, not dependent on such a thing."

With that Rykanis shrugged, and waited for the mans response.
