Howdy and Hello Grading Team!

I wasn't entirely certain where to post all of this so I thought it appropriate to place it in the "Mizahar Discussions" forum as this is a topic that is highly relevant to Mizahar.

Grades. Players absolutely love them! They're fantastic! So, in the interest of keeping everyone up to date on what's going on I thought I'd take the time to browse through all of the request threads in the active domains on the website. Here in this thread I am going to do my best to post a "status" update as to the grading queues to be found throughout the site. Just a few things before I do that though...

1.) This is not a Request Thread! It is a listing of the needs of each domain made available for the convenience of Graders and Staff members.

2.) I will not be providing direct links to those threads in need of grading as that would defeat the purpose of having request threads in every domain. I will however provide links to those request threads.

3.) Graders who notice domains are in need of attention feel free to make an announcement here if you so choose!

This is a great idea. It's been needed for a long time. I just wanted to add that if you have questions as a grader please ask them here as well. Without the Grader Program, Mizahar would have ground to a halt ages ago. I know I can't keep up with grades in my own domain due to pressures of running the site and irl issues, so graders are a lifesaver.

I also wanted to add that as a grader, if you feel a thread is beyond your capacity to grade, be sure to skip it and then pm the person you skipped as to why... and perhaps post it here and why its beyond you. Maybe another grader with expertise in that area (especially magic) would be willing to jump in and grade it next so the player doesn't feel left out and yet the grader who wants to grade can keep going without getting hung up on a particularly hard or technical thread.

Thanks for the neat summary! I wasn't looking at Syliras because of the recent initiative in Kalea, but I shall focus on that request thread now and tend to a few threads at least.

To start, this is an excellent idea. Thank you, Aoren, for taking the time to put this together. Please let me know if you require any assistance in maintaining it. We have very much needed a way for graders to quickly survey what cities are in the most need at any given time.

Graders! Please read!

It’s been brought to my attention that many of us don’t feel as if we have a firm grasp of all of the nuances of grading. We could use further training and common points of contention addressed. This has resulted in a series of misunderstandings that I would like to avoid going forward so as to benefit the game as a whole.

In that vein, I have been given approval to hold what amounts to a grading class or training session. It would be incredibly helpful if graders and players alike posted questions they may have or have often come across in others. I will sort through them and build the grading class around them.

I don’t have all of the answers, but I’ve been grading threads in Mizahar for a few years now and as such have a good grasp of things. I have some subjects that I’m weak in when it comes to Mizahar just like anyone else, but what I do have that some of you might not is an established line of communication with quite a few people who are knowledgeable where I am not. I know who to ask, where to go, how to find out.

I intend to ask Gossamer, Traverse, and Mirage to review my lesson plan for potential flaws and misconceptions before the class. This will be done so that everyone can feel confident in my answers and that I haven’t, I don’t know, drank too much wine and gone completely off my rocker. ;)

Please post your questions here or PM them to me if you feel more comfortable doing that. Next week sometime I will post an announcement here and anywhere else I can think of for the time and place for the class. Anyone who is not able to attend will be able to access my lesson plan here, in my scrapbook, and anywhere else I can think of to put it. I will attempt to also take class notes to address any additional questions that may ceom up. If there is a need to hold a second class, I can do that too, and/or potentially give my notes to another willing and able grader who may have better scheduling availability than I.

Write on,
katie.

Hi All!

I first of all want to take a moment and say thank you, the biggest thank you ever, to all our graders and the hard work they do to make sure they understand things as best they can and supply the PC's with the best grades they can. I want to thank Ao for his time he put into this and Caelum as well for the lesson's to come. I admire the initiative it takes to do these things and I know I will be keeping an eye on all of this and even asking questions when I have them. Some of you know me whether from chat or threads, on my PC's and I'd simply like to state that I know I've been grading for less time then it takes to blink. I am sure there are other people out there who feel the same, possibly other ST's though I can't speak for them. I don't have all the answers (*gasps*) and I'm the first to admit there are always places I can improve in. I actually really enjoy grading and sometimes I have questions.

I guess what I'm getting at is don't be shy to ask questions for Caelum to answer, I'm sure we've all heard this before "If you are thinking it, chances are someone else is too but is just as shy as you to ask." Just ask, we can all learn from your questions. Sometimes people have questions another person may never have thought of in a million years or just didn't know how to word right. Anywho I wanted to give my support to everyone: The graders, the ST's and all of the writers. You are all amazing and I hope to see this thread grow and thrive.

Hope you all don't mind me giving my two cents!

Global Grading Status

Postby Gossamer on August 15th, 2014, 1:05 am

I just have a couple of things to say.

Last night, unfortunately, I removed a Grader from the Grader Ranks. I did so at his request after speaking to him about grading and withholding XP. He told me that his hardest thing was determining skills being put to use in threads. Now I admit its far easier when someone says... "Let's Learn Reimancy." And then they write about reimancy. Training threads are easy that way. But when you have threads that are far more than that... some I like to call advanced threads... where issues are worked on and strong writers feed off each other to deal with situations, then the lines get a little grey. This could be addressed in the Q&A of Caelum's program. Mizahar has a lot of advanced writers and a lot of advanced threads with all kinds of skills at play that aren't obvious. You need to be careful and look for them.

That being said...

I think first and foremost, I want people to understand as well that if you become a Grader, find out its not your cup of tea, then its okay to back out or say thanks but no thanks. I have asked people to stop grading in RF because I felt their grades were shallow or stingy. Granted this hasn't happened recently, but if a PC is going to go to the trouble of writing a thread, and ten graders read that thread, they all should be willing to award almost the same grades. If not, there's a problem. Problems need fixing. I will continue to do that. Why? Because often PCs don't go to the graders to ask them to correct grades. Why? They don't want the grader discouraged, upset, or they dont want to start conflict. But if I boot a grader out of Cyphrus without trying to help them see what they are doing wrong, I am simply moving a problem elsewhere. I would much prefer folks saying... can you tell me where you see the other skills? Can you show me what I'm missing... rather than just give up and say thanks but no thanks. We do need the help. Like everything else, grading takes practice. I've made mistakes grading being in a hurry or say gave someone shortbow that needed long bow etc. It happens. You shouldn't be afraid when it does. You just smile, shrug, and do what you can to make things right for the PC(s) that took the time to write the thread in the first place.

We've really tried to eliminate the guesswork and 'I think...' out of grading in favor of the 'this is how we do it' method by establishing the Grading Guide. Grading isn't a matter of YOUR opinion. It is a matter of what's there in the thread and what the grading guide says you should do. Hate socialization? Award it anyhow if a PC is being social. You don't think someone throwing a dagger during a fight merits dagger XP? You shouldn't be a grader then. The Grading Guide clearly says it does. This is our source for where we standardize grading. Mizahar will only work if we try to stick to those standards.

What Goss said is so true. I'd just like to say that yes, you can step forward and point me to your grade and say 'hey, I also did this' or 'What do I need to do to get more of that?' So far only one person (or two?) has done that during my grading career. Of course, I've only been at it for a few months, but I mean what I write in the comments of my grades: If you're in any way not satisfied or confused by your grade, tell me and I'll see what I can do!

On a related note, I've some questions for Caelum. I'd love to participate in that grading class! These are some problems I've come across, some multiple times, while grading threads in the past.

1) How do you determine writing quality and how many additional xp do PCs get out of quality writing per post?

2) How do you distribute xp if PCs do two things at the same time or in a short period of time in a single post? Eg. can you award Observation even though the PC was doing something else because they were also looking at the thing or opponent they were doing things to (or their surroundings)?

3) When grading magic, what qualifies as a new way of using it? (This comes from grading Alses' magecrafting...)

4) What qualifies as a lore? Is there a word count limit or is it determined by its significance in the thread and to the PC? Also, how do I determine the adding of useless/fun lores?

I'll let you know if I've more.

I have a question, actually.

I'm not quite sure how to word this, so I'll use an example. If a PC sees someone go through the process of building a fire (from finding the right amount/type of wood, to building it, to lighting it), would they only earn lores for building fire or could that PC possible earn some wilderness survival skill points? Is XP only awardable when the PC does the action?

If so, if one PC is teaching another how to do something, does the student only earn skill points if they practice that in that thread? The same question goes for reading and gaining XP through that.

Does this go for all skills? A PC can only earn XP in writing if they actually write, yes. However, can a PC earn medicine XP if they are shown how to amputate a limb, but don't do actually remove someone's limb? Does that just stay as a "How to amputate a limb" lore until they actually remove someone's limb?

Thanks!
