The newcomer appeared stricken which was going to be his undoing. He had been stupid to allow whatever it was distract him from the threat before him. Darvin smiled as he reached out with the blade for the stranger’s blood. But then she got in the way. The little bird stopped his attack and pulled on his already extended arm. This hand’s grip was weak, and the dagger was twisted out from it so easily. It infuriated him. But the little bird pulled him down to his knees and kicked dirt into his eyes. It was not painful, but he groaned and immediately worked to clear his vision.

There was a smile on his face though. Pleasure that the little bird still held his lessons. Fight dirty to survive. But he heard her plea and lost his fleeting moment of pleasure. He would have something this night! Even if it wasn’t what he had initially planned. As he reached for a short sword on his hip something heavy mounted him on the back. Darvin did indeed attempt to struggle against it. In his own body, he never would have been driven to his knees so easily. And would have been able to force the stranger off him. Damn it all! “Gods damn you!”

Something was tied around him, but he was too infuriated to notice what it was. Again, he went for one of the longer blades the body carried. As his hand took hold Darvin felt something unusual. It was not like before but was equally as strange. The owner of the body was fighting against him again, though it felt weaker. Darvin was able to suppress him before he felt something else. A will pressed against him and he felt his hold slipping on the body. Then he heard it. Words that were not audible but rang in his mind.

“Be… GONE!”

A heavy push ejected him from the body. The strange sash felt like a constrictor. Darvin squeezed his way out from the tight hold. Suddenly he felt very weak and his form disappeared from sight. Too tired to properly manifest, Darvin began his retreat.

*****

Kynier was able to feel all of it. The nerves of his body revolting in pain from his failed effort. The uncomfortable torque of Kelski disarming him. And the sting of the dirt getting in his eyes. As futile as it felt, he tried to force the apparition out through sheer force of will. Darvin forced him back down.

“Have you grown so complacent that you can’t force out one ghost?”

It would seem that way. For whatever reason, Kynier just could not managed to do it on his own.

“Very well then.”

To those that employed Auristics, they would see Kynier’s aura in its may shades of purple with a dark circle at his core. A vile green and brown aura was smothering his. The two auras were struggling and emanating frustration in varying degrees. Then the dark spot at Kynier’s center expanded drastically, nearly infecting the whole of Kynier’s aura. After that, it expanded once more, and the ghost’s aura was expelled.

Kynier gasped loudly and his body fell limp to the ground. He felt as though he had been caught naked in a blizzard, it was so cold. His whole body shivered, and his breath trembled. Without Darvin’s presence violating his own, Kynier felt as though his mind was light and his thoughts were clearer. He tried to roll on to his back but felt his body roll more onto his front instead. Shyke. Overgiving. Not that he planned to be possessed again, but Kynier made a mental not to never attempt that again with Projection.

With sluggish movements Kynier used a sleeve to try and clear his eyes. The motions were desynchronized from his will, causing his arms to move seemingly randomly. Eventually, he managed to roll onto his back and looked up at the others. Inwardly, he despised appearing this way. Feeble, and in need of protection.

Kelski gave Anja room, trusting the Spiritist to know what to do even though she was worried about Kynier. She’d done her part, disarming him and distracting him with the dirt in the eyes so Anja could get into position. She wasn’t sure what Anja was doing, nor had she taken the time to call up any Auristics because the Kelvic didn’t link the two together. Magic and Ghosts were not the same in her mind.

Regardless, the struggle within Kynier was something Kelski was blind too. She thought whatever it was Anja was doing with the scarf worked because before long Kynier was falling to the ground and she physically saw Darvin’s ghost separate from him and fade from sight. Darvin’s expression was furious, so she knew his plan was thwarted, whatever that plan had been.

Kelski wasn’t using auristics. There was no time for magics in a fight… especially a fight this serious. Instead the Sea Eagle pocketed Kynier’s dagger and watched as Anja acted. She assumed Anja’s action worked thoroughly because after a bit Kynier gasped and his body fell limp. She caught Anja’s gaze and tried not to hope that whatever it was that Anja did with the substance from the vial and the sash that it had cured Kynier of his…. Possession? Kelski was extremely horrified that Darvin, even dead, could crawl into someone’s body and take it over. Shouldn’t there be a defense against it? She wasn’t sorry she knocked Kynier down, disarmed him and then kicked dirt in his eyes. She wanted Darvin down to give Anja time to act.

She was unaware of the blackness, the whole internal battle with the unknown voice, or Kynier’s role in the ejection of the spirit. Instead, she leaned back against the horse’s flank and breathed deeply, keeping her hands on her weapon. If she had to, she’d dash forward and give Kynier an expert well placed blow to the head to knock him out. She couldn’t tell, even by the lack of facial expression, if the man rolling around was Kynier, Darvin, or both. So, she gripped her weapon, watched him with her eagle eyes, and kept her distance. He said nothing, just flopped like a slowly drowning fish suddenly thrust into the air out of the water. There was no sign of something leaving Kynier… no visual clue so she had no way to know if he was suddenly clean of the ghost or not.

Scanning around, Kelski took note then that they were not alone. There were other ghosts, some slowly emerging from the shadows, others slowly assuming forms, looking onward as if a curious crowd of the dead were gathering. Kelski had seen similar things happen in the streets of Sunberth when people dueled or fought. A crowed would gather to see what was going on. To her left, an old woman seemed to whisper to a younger man – both transparent – and equally transparent coins changed hands as they placed bets. Her eyes widened and she threw her gaze back at Anja, hoping he could tell if Kynier was okay or not.

More and more she wanted to leave, to get home, to be someplace more familiar safer. This was an alien landscape, an aspect to life she knew nothing about. The arrival of more ghosts, ghosts of all sorts, set the hair on the back of her neck to standing straight up. She had goosebumps on her arms, shoulders, and her concern for Kynier and her fear at what he might be… infused with Darvin… was spiraling up and out of control in her. She was afraid… truly afraid… and the subject of her fear was indeed the man she loved.

Kelski’s eyes showed white as her pupils dilated. She concentrated on Maisa’s warm body behind her and dragged in deep breaths. She wasn’t going to run… she truly wasn’t. But it took all her willpower to lock her legs and stand there as the reality of the fact Darvin was still here hit her. Death wasn’t the end. Kynier could be compromised. Anyone could be compromised. Spirits were real… the ghosts Anja had told her about. His explanation had been scary enough. But faced with the reality of what was happening before her, it was almost too much for the Kelvic to process. Still, she stood her ground, drew daggers for each hand, and watched Kynier’s attempts to wipe out his eyes.

“Anja… whats going on? Did your sash work? Is he okay?” She whispered, barely audible. Fear was laced in her voice, giving it a tremble.

Night Flight (Kelski)

Anja felt the ghost burst from Kynier's body; an anthem of hatred radiating from it's core, growing fainter and fainter as it fled and vanished into the night. There had been something strange about this exorcism in particular, but Anja had no time to dwell on it. He was mostly simply relieved it had worked. Anja lifted himself off of Kynier and watched as the man rolled to his stomach and pushed himself wearily to his feet. The Spiritist unwound the sash from around Kynier, then offered the man first a hand to help pull him to his feet, then an arm to lean against. “There we are,” Anja said, patting Kynier on his back. “It was a bit of a rough one but we got through it.”

Anja glanced to Kelski, her back to Maisa as his strider provided a reassuring presence for the ashen faced woman. Anja could all but feel the fear radiating from the woman like heat from a stove. “He's okay,” Anja told Kelski. Maisa added a nicker of reassurance, gently nosing the woman's shoulder. Anja glanced at the small crowd of ghosts who had gathered around the group, whispers rising up among the tombs. A look of annoyance crossed the Spiritist's face. Even in death, people often stayed the same. This crowd was no different than a group of breathing Berthers gawking at the scene of a murder. “Nothing to see here,” Anja called out to the ghosts, both annoyance and a hint of command carried in his voice. “Don't you lot have better things to do?”

Irritable grumbles rose from the crowd of spirits, but the action was over and there wasn't really much to see now. One by one the ghosts shambled away or dissipated, heading off to do whatever it was that they occupied themselves with in their unlifes. Anja sighed and whispered a soft prayer of thanks to Dira, before turning back to his friends. “Are the both of you well?” Anja asked. “That experience was---” he wanted to say traumatizing, but he did not. “---upsetting. Come, let us sit down. I can take you to my tent if you'd like.” If the offer was accepted, Maisa would lead the way out of the catacombs and towards the more open section of the Dust Bed where Anja's tent and his circle of ghostbeads waited. Otherwise, Anja would insist that the sit down somewhere nearby.

A chill had covered his entire body, one that wasn’t caused by the night. Trembling came from the cold envelopment of a spirit and the overgiving of Projection. Neither one contributed more than the other. But after a couple of moments it was less severe as Anja removed the sash that had been wrapped around Kynier’s body. The man’s voice was soothing and much calmer than expected. It even sounded professional. Grasping the man’s hand, the mage was hoisted up to his feet. His balance was a little disturbed, but he kept his feet. And it wasn’t until Anja had raised his voice that Kynier noticed all the ghosts surrounding them.

As though they were some sort of spectacle that had concluded, the apparitions left and faded from view. While his dread was not refreshed, it was prolonged by the site of the number of spirits that roamed the Dust Beds. Were there truly that many ghosts that haunted the city? Or were there more in the city proper? It did not seem to matter now as only the three of them, Maisa, and the strange dog remained. “Thank you, Anja,” he said quietly to the man at his side. Kynier turned his gaze to the Sea Eagle that stood by the Strider. “Despite feeling cold, I’m alright,” he said to her.

The presence within had gone quiet once more, leaving a strange absence behind in his mind. Kynier gave his head a single shake as he rubbed at his brow. Images and sounds that he did not recognize vaguely teased his senses. Ripples left behind from the vengeful spirits eviction. With a soft groan, he turned to the Ghost Hunter. “The safety of your camp has a strong appeal to it. It would be greatly appreciated to rest a little there.” Being still was the last thing he wanted to do, but if Anja thought that rest was what needed to happen then who was he to argue?

Kynier went over to journey to Anja’s camp by Kelski’s side. A hand rested on her opposite shoulder as they walked. Fingers squeezing gently in assurance, for both hers and his. Without going too far the exhaustion crashed down on him suddenly. For a few chimes he had forgotten how much he had put his body through before they had been ambushed. Feet were nearly dragging across the ground as his legs stiffened and signaled their ache to him. It made the walk to Anja’s camp feel like a hike up a mountain. When he saw the spiritbead barrier a sense of relief washed over him. Petching ghosts.

He accepted whatever assistance was offered to him as he took a seat on the ground. A fire would have been welcome, but there were only embers in the pit by Anja’s tent. Still shivering a little, and covered in cold sweats, Kynier wrapped himself a little tighter in his cloak. “What… how did you know to come to us, Anja? With so many ghosts in the Dust Beds, how were you able to sense ours?” The mage tried to keep his eyes open. Every time he blinked, he saw something. A trace of something that wasn’t his. Whenever he tried to capture it, it only slipped further beyond his reach. Kynier turned to Kelski. “Next time, we should avoid coming to the Dust Beds,” he said with a little jest to his tone.

Night Flight (Kelski)

He’s okay. He’s okay. He’s okay.

Kelski echoed Anja’s words in her mind over and over, chanting them like a mantra, even as she continued to grip her daggers as hard as her own fear gripped her. Maisa’s presence had helped. Somehow the big strong animal behind her in a good solid presence gave her the courage to stand there and not flee. But gods… the kelvic had never been on the verge of a blind panicked flight like she had been only moments ago. If Darvin had taken anyone but Kynier, she would have fled. And it shamed her that she knew the truth of it. And it shamed her as well that she was still terrified.

Death wasn’t the end. Darvin was still in the world, still able to hurt her, and even as she watched Kynier and Anja somewhat come back to themselves, she felt the hot blood of Darvin’s life force spill over her face as she garroted him to death. He’d been invading her body, hurting her for pleasure, and now she knew he could hurt Kynier… any of them… whenever he wanted.

Kelski was terrified. She was core deep terrified and she knew without a doubt she’d never get another restful night again. Glancing around, her awareness slowly expanding out, she saw the other specters, the ones that had come to witness the fight. The Kelvic felt her world grow wider, broader, as what she knew suddenly felt so small in the reality of what truthfully existed. How much more of this was out there? Was Darvin just as a sprouting plant, hiding a tangled convoluted root system beneath the ground just out of sight? The Sea Eagle dragged in a breath, then another, and schooled her features into careful neutrality. She held her daggers tight to stop her hands from trembling.

At Anja’s question, Kelski nodded and carefully sheathed one dagger then another, the second almost stabbing her as her trembling hand missed the sheath initially. Just chimes ago she’d felt strong, powerful, free… running with her mate and filled with joy. It had all changed so quickly.

Kelski’s head came up at Kynier’s offer of thanks to Anja. She added her own thank you to Kynier’s as she took a moment and leaned against Maisa once more. The Kelvic reached behind her and stroked the horse in thanks as well. If the big body hadn’t been behind her as a solid wall, Kelski might just have given into the urge and fled.

She was glad when they started moving, though Kelski hadn’t said a word since the ghost had departed and the others had faded away. Kynier’s hand on her shoulder steadied her a bit as well, urging her to follow them. The Kelvic kept her head down, both to avoid seeing the ghosts and to avoid showing either Kynier or Anja the fear that was still in her eyes.

She settled beside Kynier, and at his shivering she unshouldered the pack beside her and pulled out a second cloak – her cloak – and draped him in it. Kelski kept her eyes low and asked no questions. She’d never really dealt with Darvin’s death. She’d never processed what happened to her. Instead, she’d just moved forward, the fact that Darvin could never hurt her again giving her the courage to do that. Now… that belief was shattered. Darvin could still hurt her. And, evidently, hurt the people she loved.

Kelski listened quietly to Kynier’s questions to Anja and then she’d listen to Anja’s answers to Kynier if he gave them. To busy herself, she’d start laying the fire. The run before the ghost hadn’t tired her overly much. Kelski was in good shape and had loved the chase across the city. Her mind, though, was a completely different story. Fear still rode her and she was glad neither the Drykas or the Mage were Kelvic. For another of her kind could smell the fear still rolling off her no matter how stoic she appeared.

At Kynier jesting tone, she only nodded. She would have vocalized an agreement but she didn't trust herself to speak.

Anja was mostly relaxed but wary as he wound his way through the dank catacombs towards the edge of the Dust Bed, where himself and Jeb resided. The Drykas listened intently to the songs surrounding him, but none of them had the melody of violence that the aggressive ghost had displayed. The ghost appeared to have disappeared for the moment. There was nothing saying that he would remain gone for long, but for the moment at least, everything was safe and quiet and the ghosts gave the quintet of humanoids and animals a wide berth.

Anja maintained his position beside Kynier, offering a shoulder to the man should his strength suddenly fail him. The Spiritist wasn't entirely sure how Kynier had been affected by the possession, and his gaze on the mage remained tentative and cautious. Light padded in circles around the group, offering an occasional growl to the darkness. Her bright eyes seemed to stare daggers into the shadows, and several times Anja heard a flutter of shadows skittering away into the night from the force of her gaze. Maisa kept up her own position beside Kelski, equally wary. The mare was in a protective mood, and Anja had no doubts that the strider was ready to bite and kick at any encroachers. Anja didn't miss the bracing stance Maisa had taken up beside Kelski. When the group finally breached Anja's ward, Drykas, dog, and strider all breathed a tangible sigh of relief. When Kelski began stirring the fire back to life, Anja dragged over some old dry twigs and firewood for her to work with, and helped settle Kynier in front of the fire.

“You owe your good fortune to my canine friend here,” Anja told Kynier. “Kynier, Kelski, meet Light. We discovered each other quite by accident and now she keeps me company when she so desires.” Light perked up hear ears at the sound of her name, and walked over to sniff at both Kynier and Kelski's hands before settling down beside the fire opposite to them. Anja vanished into his tent for a moment, before returning a moment later with some dried jerky ration in his hands. He tossed some to Light, who ate it in a flash befitting any true Berther. “Good girl,” Anja told her, and leaned over to stroke her behind the ears. “Good find.” A white tail thudded against the ground happily amidst the sound of crunching. Anja turned back to Kelski and Kynier with a slight smile.

“I'm not much of a host,” the Drykas admitted. “I think I have some leftover cheese from my Spiritism materials if your hungry. Or I have jerky or...water.” Anja frowned, frustrated with himself. He wasn't much of a host at present. He sighed through his frustration, before turning his gaze on Kynier. “How are you feeling?” he asked. “Possession often leaves some uncomfortable feelings behind.” As Anja spoke to the pair, he gestured for Maisa to join him. The Strider seemed reluctant to leave Kelski's sidd, so Anja breached the distance between them, and began running his hands over her white coat and dark feet, checking for injuries she might have sustained in the battle. She seemed uninjured and unaffected, but happily indulged in the attention. He also offered Kelski a reassuring touch to her shoulder before resuming attention on his strider.

Kynier set his fingers behind Light’s ear and rubbed at that spot for a moment. “You have my thanks then,” he said to the dog before she wandered to the other side of the campfire. As Anja disappeared into the tent, Kynier took stock of the situation. His legs were still flaring with that post-run warmth, making their movements just a bit stiffer than normal. While he sat by the fire, he stretched out a leg and lifted his toes to generate that stretch in the calf muscles. He winced a little as the Ghost Hunter came back with some dried meat, passing a piece first to Light before making an effort to offer something to the Nightstalkers.

“Thank you, Anja, but I’m not sure I could handle trying to eat or drink anything at the moment.” A queasiness had settled in the bit of his stomach at the mere mention of food. There was a feeling that he couldn’t shake off since Darvin’s possession. A sense of being basked in filth and having a slimy residue that he could not see, nor smell, but felt. When Anja asked how he felt, he was hesitant to answer for a moment. Rather than trying to shrug it off, it seemed better to just admit the truth. “I don’t feel fine. That ghost… was so full of hatred. Hatred so intense that it leaves a bad after taste. But, I feel that all over my body.”

Kelski had been unusually quiet, and the stoic expression did not fool him. He set a hand on top of hers to give reassurance. If she had no desire to speak, then he wouldn’t force her too. As bad as the encounter had been for him, it likely had been worse for her. Darvin was something she rarely spoke of, and Kynier made an effort to never ask. The man was dead, and it seemed as though it were over with. Kelski would be able to leave that part of her life behind. Instead, it had followed her, and had tried to use him to cause her pain. Kynier blinked and saw a flash of something, causing him to close his eyes and pinch the bridge of his nose. Whatever the image was, it moved beyond his recollection and was lost. When he opened his eyes, he looked at the fire.

For a long while he was silent. Thinking over the sensations he had felt during his possession. Obsession and desire to harm. Why though? It seemed as though the man had been broken in life, and sought to appease his pain by spreading it to others. To try and forcefully claim satisfaction through people he considered weaker than him. Such thoughts and emotions turned Kynier’s stomach uncomfortably. The cool night air was able to provide a little relief, but there was only one thing he could think of that would make the two of them feel better. That was to return to the Midnight Gem.

Perhaps a bell had passed, or at least it felt like one had, since they sat down at Anja’s camp. Kynier broke himself out of his trance and looked to the Ghost Hunter. “Thank you for the shelter of your home, Anja, but it’s probably best that we return to ours.” Kynier stood up and offered his hand to Anja to clasp. “I owe you for this.” Afterwards, he turned to Kelski to offer a hand to help her to her feet, not that she needed one. If she chose to stay, then he wouldn’t argue. But he was feeling antsy and needed to be on his way. He set off beyond the safety of the spiritbeads around the Drykas’ camp, and felt more aware of the silence of the Dust Beds as he traveled back to the Midnight Gem.
