New Places to Experience (Crylon)

What Crylon said made perfect sense from a logistical standpoint. Building wasn’t inexpensive and would need to serve a purpose. “You’re right. Perhaps it would be better to just take it down and clear the area. Salvage what materials that they can out of it. I mean, why allow all these unused, and potentially dangerous to be in, buildings remain if no one is interested in them?” Kynier gave Crylon a glance before letting out a soft, bemused, snort of air. “Of course, tearing the down is probably also expensive. Which then leaves the question of who would pay to tear it down.” Kynier sighed. “Seems like the only people wanting to make changes are the ones without the means to do so.”

He watched Crylon mull over his words and could see when the man appeared to have really understood his meaning. The casual way he said spy made Kynier chuckle and cover his eyes with a hand. When his hand was lowered from his eyes, he looked around to see if anyone was within earshot of the Isurian’s statement. Kynier shook his head gently with a disbelieving smirk. In a city of distrust, it wasn’t wise to let it become well-known that his profession was that of an untrustworthy nature. The Isurian didn’t seem to mean anything by it, so Kynier did not comment on it further.

Crylon may have had some difficulty with understanding or speaking the common tongue, but at times could be very direct and precise. His next comment on change was exactly that. That was the true issue all the dreamers had in their goals of changing Sunberth. Somehow, the citizens had to be convinced that it was a change that they wanted. Various organizations, either magical, militant, or other, have tried to enforce their views onto the city, and the city always rejected it eventually. So then, changes needed to be displayed as something that they needed or wanted. “But how do you convince everyone? It’s anarchy and they prefer it that way. But this ‘everybody fends for themselves’ attitude prevents the city from progressing. This place could be a city of positive influence if they wanted it to be.”

It was unusual being called young when he had already gone through a fourth or a third of his expected lifespan. But Kynier studied Crylon’s physical aspects more closely to better understand what the Isurian was saying. “Twenty,” he said clearly for the man. What little Kynier knew about the Isurian culture was that they hailed from a place called Sultros. It seemed like an ideal place to live in regarding the society. He hadn’t been aware of how long lived the race was. So, when Crylon said he was nearly sixty, Kynier’s eyes opened a little wider in surprise. “Hmmm. Of course, we would seem to live fast if you’re sixty. By the time a human is your age, our bodies are beginning to grow frail. We have fewer years to fit so many hopes into. And whose to say that we wouldn’t have those years taken from us?”

When Crylon talked of volunteering at the Orphanage, it was strangely inspiring. It was difficult to sway the thoughts of an adult. To try and counteract or undermine the experiences they had for something different. But it was like how Crylon said. Children were not likely to be set in their ways. “If you would like, I could show you were the Orphanage is in the city. It’s in the Sunset Quarters district. I used to live near it.”

As he listened to what it was that Crylon did when he wasn’t being an architect, it was very similar to what another Isurian he used to know would do. As Kynier thought on it, he found it to be interesting to compare humans to Isurians. One had longer lives, were inherently blessed by a divine being, and sought to be better. Whereas the other worked harder in a shorter time, often striving to be the best at something. There was the significant difference… it was one thing to be the best, and another to be better. “New knowledge can be empowering,” he said a bit whimsically. As a mage, there was a desire to reclaim the lost knowledges.

“Where are you staying Crylon? Where are you living while in Sunberth? It sounds like you’re probably living out of someone else’s place and renting. I’m guessing this because you want to improve on your trade before constructing your own home, wherever that will be.”

New Places to Experience (Crylon)

Postby Crylon Stonecraft on January 26th, 2019, 3:16 pm

Crylon simply considered in silence the mans response. From Crylon's review of things the other man seemed to be just now considering the ramifications of such a thing. He seemed quick to judge, to spout ideas of what should be done, but did not seem so quick to think them through or consider how such a thing would be undertaken. Though perhaps, spurred by Crylon doing so, he did think a bit further through to the next step after being told of the first issue or step.

But then Crylon by his nature was patient, and tended to think things through. Planning, considering steps and requirements, seemed a natural state for him to reach for. And so it was natural for him to not just idly listen to the humans idea, but to take the next step by thinking of how such a thing could be done and what would stand in its way.

“Take time, effort, to take down. Which mean money. Cost then, tear down, whether build after or not. Is easy, want change. Anyone do. Want better for self. Want different. Think better for them. Not so easy, actually do, actually make change happen, actually make better for self and other.”

Crylon considered his question for a few moments, before responding with a shrug.

“I know build. Make. People, people not so easy. Want change land, get hands dirty, make new place. Want change people, not so direct. Not so simple, seem. But seem, in time, anything possible. If not rush, and do proper. Maybe one person at time, till all agree. Or some other way. Just know if force, not last. If want build wall, don't throw down stone all at once. Lay one block down, prepare, get just right, and then another. If do that, wall last, is tight, good wall. Seem maybe same with change with people. With city. If rush, if try too much a once, not last, not stand.”

At the offering to show Crylon the mentioned place, the orphanage, Crylon paused, taking a moment to take in the building. The building the man was having built. Not building, not currently doing. Not currently busy with, besides watching someone else do. So it did not seem taking such an offer would be a hardship for the human.

“If want show way, would be good. New city, not think been to part you mention place in. Would be good, know of where find.”

“Learn new, always good. Like say fore, new things, is new tool. More tools, always make job, work, easier.”

At the mention of where he stayed Crylon considered his answer for several moments. A noticeable pause. Not whether he should lie or tell the truth, but whether or not he should answer. If it would be trading value to the man... But then, where he stayed was not exactly difficult to find out or secret. He was rather noticeable, and it would not take more than a day of following him to learn where he stayed. If even that long. So not in truth too rare or valuable knowledge even then, should it be wanted.

“Not have own place, but not rent. Work for woman, who making new place. Managing building of place. Part of pay, is room. Stay there. At Gem. You know place?”

It wasn’t easy, that’s for sure. There were plenty of things that could be changed. Several opportunities to make something different and hope that it would have a lasting impact. But Kynier’s obstacle was understanding the city a little deeper than the typical citizen. For having a partial image of the web that all the things he disagreed with generated. For a long time, he had been attempting to understand where to begin with the changes. Which piece of the web to break first for the most impact. Each time he though he figured it out, he learned something new that would change his mind.

Crylon was correct about people being harder to change. And that’s where it needed to happen most. The way the Isurian said it though, sounded that he wasn’t as interested in changes to the present moment. That he had more concern for the future. Changing one person at a time was an ideal thought, but even a long lived Isurian wouldn’t be able to see the impact that had on the world in his time. The metaphor wasn’t lost on the mage. But even Cryon had commented on how building something and changing people wasn’t the same.

“Hmm,” he grunted in acknowledgement. Kynier tried to contemplate swaying one person to do things differently. One person had several interactions and could generate a cascade of doing things differently in time. But here, in this city, tomorrow was never a guarantee. The person they take all the time to change could be lying dead in the street the next day. Or later that same night. “Perhaps that could work with Isurians. With your long lives, you have a lot of time to share ideas. Weigh out your options. Humans,” Kynier paused to consider his words carefully. “Humans are short lived and frail by comparison. In Sunberth, they are even shorter lived. More stubborn even. Several times in Sunberth’s history someone has tried to initiate change. And everyone revolted against it. Perhaps it’s just a foolish endeavor to change the city.”

At the man’s agreement to see where the Orphanage was, Kynier detached himself from the fence post he was leaning against. Turning around, he braced a foot and vaulted over the fence to stand beside Crylon. “The Orphanage is not too far from here.,” he said as he began to walk. “It’s in the southeast corner of the city. The area around it has less gang related activity than most of the city. Trying to influence the children there would not be met with as much resistance.” Kynier adjusted his pace to comfortably match Crylon’s. It was a comfortable pace that wasn’t too slow, nor full of haste.

He listened as Crylon described getting a place to stay as part of payment for applying his trade. Someone was attempting to expand their influence or business then? That was a valuable bit of information for a spy. Kynier was wondering which woman this could be until Crylon was able to tell him with just a single word, “Gem”. His attention locked on the path they were taking as they made their way southeast. For a few steps, his lungs denied the desire to fill with air as he thought about that place. The memories of living and the pains of his recent decisions dominating his thoughts for a moment. “Yes, I know the place,” he said a bit quietly. Forcing air into his chest he tried to banish the depression from his mind.

“I know the woman that you speak of. Kelski K’etir. She’s a good person, despite having suffered several wrongs at the hands of others. The others that live there are also decent people.” Kynier turned his gaze to meet Crylon’s. “Do right by them and you’ll have people that you can truly rely on.” Kynier tried to disguise the experience of his words from his tone. Then he pulled his gaze away to refocus his mind on something else.

The walk to the Orphanage took some time. Organized was not a word one could associate to the streets of the Sunset Quarters. Even though most of it had been rebuilt less than a decade ago. He decided to tell Crylon a little about it. “I wasn’t living in Sunberth at the time, but about six years ago there was a fire in this area. A lot of the buildings were ruined, and many people had died. The citizens came together to rebuild the entire area. Who provided the materials, I don’t know. That makes these some of the newest structures in the city.”

“Despite the terrible things that some people do to each other here, that story always sparks a little hope. Hope that the people can be better because they’ve proven capable of supporting each other. But it’s only ever happened in times of need it seems. Somehow, they need to be convinced that every time is a time of need. Would you agree?”

New Places to Experience (Crylon)

Crylon nodded in response to Kynier's response, shrugging somewhat noncommittally.

“Live long, also have long time, be stuck in ways. Not mean not try change way see things. Whether Isur, or human, or other. But if life short, not want make something of life in short time? Or.. Waste... Squander? Seem if life short, meaning for short life all more important. Leave impact. Not forgotten.”

Since coming to Sunberth, Crylon was half certain he had witnessed more death, active death in front of him, than he had seen in all the time before he had come to the city. Human life seemed cheap, somewhat contradictory to his mind to the fact that Sunberth also had slavery.

For all its faults, Ravok in its handling of things seemed a bit more logical. Which, Crylon realized then, was a bit funny seeing as it was... Well Ravok. But it was not wasteful, and slaves were a thing of value treated with a mind to keeping that value just as much as a trader keeping lumber or food stuffs did not burn his wares or leave them out to rot.

“In past, this change. Was forced, or given? If forced... Well see why fail, same as said before. Not mean people not able change, if when people try force change not want they go against. If people try make house out of sand, rain comes and washes away, not mean you not try build house. Means you try in different way, hope for different result.”

Crylon headed along with Kynier as he led him away, considering for a moment if the man planned something untoward... A trap? Some bit of cunning? But then, he did not have much of anything on him, was not out to buy things, and so really did not have much worth taking. He supposed someone might want to rob him, but it seemed an overly elaborate charade to gain his trust and get him to follow him.

Besides, it seemed to Crylon more likely the man hoped to show his skill and bring him to mind should Crylon ever have need of a spy.

He did not comment on the mans exuberance in moving over the fence, which seemed a waste of effort, but instead simply headed along at a steady pace after the man. Not in a rush. Not winding himself. Just stretching his legs and walking along with the human.

Rather than responding he focused on retaining the directions to get where they were going, mentally focusing on the general map of Sunberth he was making. The coast, the Gem, over here... The market here... This mans house here... And from there to where they were going... The orphanage.

Once he knew how to get there he could try finding alternate routes, but first a location was needed as the first step of properly navigating the city. A focus on landmarks. Notable structures. Businesses. A man sleeping in the street, one leg dangling over a windowsill.

He did not notice Kynier's pause at his offhand note on who his employer was, where he was staying, but did notice when the man began speaking.

Crylon was not sure why, but clearly the man was affected by the simple mentioning of the place... And had some strong tie to it by Crylon's reckoning. But clearly did not still retain those ties, or else he would have heard of Kynier or Kynnier would be speaking with less emotion. He clearly knew more if nothing else than a casual passerby, or someone who had not been involved deeply with the people and goings on at the place.

As he continued to speak on it he tried to mask his emotion, his feeling, his involvement, but the first tone and the words themselves gave him away.

“I try do right all. Seem easier way live, try do right by people, than making enemies. Have remember who all have debt with, who all want ill.”

Once they arrived at the Sunset Quarters, Crylon looked about. As Kynier pointed out, he did see some signs of the places being a bit newer. And yet still in disrepair like the rest of the city. New, it seemed, did not mean good. At least not in Sunberth.

This seemed odd to Crylon, why one would make something badly, or not to last, but such seemed normal in the city.

“Newer. Not maybe better, seem. Still see much need fixing. Repair. Upkeep. If want thing last, must upkeep. Seem concept not understood well with Sunberth.”

“But seem is good thing, if people do pull together to help other. Mean have in, to do so. Even if not always do. Not always important do same, so long as work for same. Same goal. Can do different things to get to, and end up at same place. Think though more important, together when important, than all time. Can have balance, work self, and work others and city.”

“Where you be, before come Sunberth? Said destroy, was before come city.”

It was a fair point, that those who lived longer could develop habits that would be difficult to break as they aged. Crylon was certainly a contemplative person. It seemed like he would not be the sort to develop a tendency that would be difficult to break. The Isur continuously talked about things through a purely logical standpoint. And never commented on just one side of a debate. It was almost entertaining to Kynier to be able to say something and then wait for Crylon to speak on the multiple viewpoints. They had a few agreements, and some miscommunication. But whether Crylon was a good person or not, there wasn’t really a debate about it.

“Most of the changes in the past were forced upon the people, to my understanding. Multiple times through history, the people of Sunberth were forced to work the mines just to increase the wealth of a few individuals.” Kynier lowered his voice a little. “Fifty years ago, there was a cabal of mages that killed all the powerful figureheads in the city at the time and took over. They used magic in horrific ways on the people and treated all of them like slaves. After nearly fifteen years, the people revolted and killed the mages. Since then, every citizen grew to hate a mage and is willing to kill them on sight.”

“The only changes the entire city has grown to agree to, is to not be ruled, and to not tolerate the presence of mages.” Whether Crylon had magic training or not, it was a valuable bit of information to know about Sunberth. The paranoia and quick to violence attitude that many citizens possessed. Such hazards may not apply to the Isur, but they’d likely provide insight when he went around trying to change one person’s opinion at a time.

What Crylon had said after Kynier’s remarks about the Midnight Gem and the people that lived there confused him a little. Mostly the notion of people of having debt with. Did the Isurians consider friendships to be a form of debt, or was it just the most accurate word that the man knew? Perhaps the fellow meant favor. Kynier did not say anything in response to it beyond an acknowledging, “Mmm-hmm.” It had been nearly a full season, and it still felt fresh when he thought about it. Talking about the Sunset Quarter fire and the rebuild helped to distract his mind.

“No, I suppose not. I would suspect that many of them were built by those that had no experience being an architect. The place I had when I lived in this area was one of the better built places. Which meant that the roof didn’t leak, and the walls kept the wind out. As appreciative as I am to have had that place as my home, I wouldn’t want to ever come back to the Sunset Quarter to live in. Some places you can’t return to once you leave.” As much as Kynier wanted to believe his last statement, he didn’t completely feel that way.

“Perhaps its just because it is the Sunset Quarter. Most of the people of Sunberth have their homes here. There’s some sort of silent agreement among the gangs to not disturb this district. It’s not completely safe. Thieves will still try to pick the lock or steal your coin purse in the street. But, it does allow someone to feel at least a little safer.” Kynier was looking around at the buildings as he spoke. Places that he must have walked by a thousand times. Yet, he couldn’t remember the last time he had really looked at any of them. Crylon was right. They were newer, but a good deal of them did not appear to be of better quality.

Kynier hadn’t expected to be asked that question and was a little surprised by the Isurian’s interest. “I was born in Nyka. But my family moved out of the city when I was young. Then I lived in Syliras. There, I became an apprentice,” Kynier paused, thinking of how to describe Bourin without saying the Eypharian was a wizard. “The man was a scholar and gave me my education. He expected me to pursue his goals and dreams after his death though. It was one of many disagreements we had towards the end. One day, I left because I wanted to try and make changes that would affect the world. Sunberth seemed like a good place to try and make those changes.”

“Unfortunately, most of what my instructor had taught me has no application in Sunberth. So, I’ve had to take some more creative approaches to get myself established here.” They came to a stop outside of a two-story stone structure. The top part of the building showed signs of damage, as though it used to be larger. “This is the place,” he said to the Isurian.

New Places to Experience (Crylon)

Postby Crylon Stonecraft on February 12th, 2019, 2:08 am

Crylon tended to project a facade of calmness, of not being easily impressed or thrown for a loop. In part this was something he cultured, but also was perhaps partly due to his history, upbringing, and nature as an Isur. He was quick to reconsider things, viewpoints, as wrong, and did his best to not hold too tightly to any prior knowledge should he find out it could be or was wrong.

It also meant some people felt more comfortable telling him things, if they thought he would not overreact to whatever they said. Or at least, this was in part his reasoning for culturing such an outer countenance. A skilled eye could at times still see the chips in the facade revealing the truth below, but for the most part he was a rather calm person and not in a hurry.

Not being in a hurry, he did not seem to emit so much of that same urgency that a human would, which was one such tell that could break such a facade.

One thing though thwarting much of his efforts as communication and understanding, was his lacking of fluency in the common tongue of the humans. He was doing his best to remedy this, and felt he was slowly gaining understanding in turns of phrases and things, but was not quite there yet. Which meant sometimes he just could not get a point across, or at least not on the first try.

Crylon listened as Kynier delved into the history of Sunberth. Times where they were forced to work the mines, for the betterment of a few. Times were magic users took over, which perhaps explained some of their hate for magic. A bit foolish, as they still let other things control them, and let their hate of magic control them which was in itself letting the very thing they hated affect and control them.

He did not get everything, Kynier in his explanation speaking a bit quickly and using a few words Crylon did not know. But he got the main thrust of his words, and pieced together some of the other bits from context.

A cabal seemed a group, negative in the connotation of the story. Though perhaps more than just this?

Kynier's reaction or lack thereof to his explanation on the debts people held with others seemed lost in translation, perhaps the metaphor lacking something? Often such phrases and physical representations made concepts easier to explain with selective use of language, but even this was not fool proof.

“I is... Difficult splain. Is debt of people. Thing that connect, in... Bad way. If man attack you, you get away. You see them again, that man has debt to you, is why you would come after, maybe attack, if saw again. Feel man owe you debt. When wrong people, whether for purpose or accident, whether do good or bad, if other see as ill they make debt that feel you owe. Is this, debt speak of.”

“If wrong many, must consider all debts owed when meet people, for fear they call debt when see. Is sense? This is try explain. Is why if can, try do good people, not make many debts other try call. Try make opposite debt, make... Eh, loan? Other feel do good for, feel they owe me, rather I owe them. Is surely better, than owe debt for have wrong. Not always make all happy, but try not make others ill.”

At Kynier's comment on the buildings, Crylon considered his words. It was another indicator of Sunberth, of what was considered a good building which in most places not Sunberth would be tolerable or average. Defining characteristics Crylon thought of as base requirements to be considered a proper shelter, which seemed in this city a rarity and sign of good work not passable or standard construction.

Odd to his own mind, which thought on the ways he could build better, stronger, higher, wider, and overall of higher quality.

Of hearing of Nyka, Crylon knew very little. He had passed through the city on his way there, but had used it more as a pushing off point from the caravan and onto a boat as soon as he could, rather than as a place to stop. Due to this he knew very little of it, almost nothing.

Syliras he had heard of as well, but also did not know too much of the place. He did wonder how a Syliran spy, who had apprenticed under a scholar by Kynier's words, had ended up working in Sunberth. Or perhaps he was being shifty, as he had been when describing his job as a spy, and did not mean he was a scholar in truth?

A quest to make changes, to affect the world. Crylon also considered such things, but in a different way than the human. Or so Crylon felt.

When they arrived at the structure of the Orphanage, Crylon spent a chime inspecting it critically. It seemed at once broken and intact. Repaired, and in misuse. Clearly, if nothing else, in need of a skilled hand at repairing and maintaining, which it did not have. Or perhaps simply the funds to pay for the supplies to make those repairs.

“Is children, live here? Seems not much better, other places in area. Seems either need hands to fix, or things to fix with. Or both. Is anyone understand maintain building in Sunberth? Or if do understand, actually do so?”

Kynier had been struggling to understand what Crylon meant the first time he had said “debt”. It seemed that his reaction was enough to illicit an attempt of an explanation. Kynier focused so much on trying to understand the Isurian’s choice of words that it slowed his pace a little. Now he felt that he understood what the fellow had meant by saying “remember who all have debt with”. And yet, it hadn’t been completely clarified. Or, at least, now he understood enough to ask about something that Crylon hadn’t explained.

“Okay, now I understand. But there is something that I must ask about. Someone attacks you, or does wrong by you, and now that person has a debt to you. In your culture, what does someone do to repay that debt? It sounds as though if you were to attack them in return, that would only place you in debt. Do you repay a debt with service? Or favors?” Around Sunberth, debt meant owing money to one of the most influential people in the city. Kynier suspected that Crylon’s version of debt could not be paid in gold.

Quietly the Isurian listened to him briefly and vaguely describe how it was that he had ended up living in the city of anarchy. And for once, the Isurian did not begin to inquire for more detail about it. Something that Kynier was a bit thankful for. A verbal dance around saying he was a spy had been challenging enough. To perform another around the topic of his magical training would be far more difficult. And the last thing Kynier wanted to happen was for Crlyon to just blurt out, “Oh, you’re a mage! Why didn’t you just say so!”

At the sight of the orphanage, Kynier looked more at the building’s structure than he would have before. Perhaps it was because of the company that he was with, or maybe that he had spent a season watching his own home being built. Either way, it was something he was now looking at that he wouldn’t have given any real consideration to before. Then, he listened to Crylon’s critique about the quality, which made him quietly chuckle to himself. “I suspect that they lack both. A lot of time and resource would be spent feeding and caring for the children. There is probably very little, or nothing, left afterwards to contribute to a major project like that.”

With a glance to the sky, Kynier read where Syna was for the time. While there had been very few things on his agenda for the day, there was very little remaining of it. If he was going to get some food and other supplies for the coming days, he was going to have to make his way back to the markets fairly soon. He turned to face the Isurian and offered his hand. “The bells are growing late, and I have a few things left to accomplish today. It was a pleasure making your acquaintance Crylon. I hope you fair well in the city. And should you need assistance with something, do not hesitate to ask. Leaving a note with the bartender at No Man’s Land tavern is the best way of reaching me.”

After their parting words, Kynier would turn west to return to the Seaside Market.

Postby Crylon Stonecraft on March 1st, 2019, 12:13 am

At Kynier's turn onto more serious topics in response to Crylons explanation, the Isur paused for a moment in consideration.

It was he realized less of a hypothetical situation, and more of a reality. Something he had faced first hand since coming to Sunberth.

“Is not of culture, is of self. Is own way, own choice. Same as with human, each differ. For self... Is different, be good, than be... Nice... Over push. One try do good, be good person. Other let others do as will. Not same. I try treat other as wish treated. Expect treated. But if take at mine, or self, defend self. Do what needed to protect own. But not one start things, or do ill if not need. Only as need. ”

“May not hold onto, but not forget. If comes again, will remember. But not dwell on. No good come, dwell.”

He was saddened by the sight of the place where orphans lived, though at the same time comparing it to the way many lived within the city... It seemed a step up at least from many such others there. But by any proper standards it was still not truly a passable building to Crylon and his sensibilities. Only be Sunberhian standards would anyone consider this better than a hole.

But if lack of resources was the problem, perhaps then Crylon could assist as he had considered? Labor was something he could provide, know how still being something he was working on for such undertakings.

Having brought Crylon to the orphanage, it seemed the human was ready to part ways. Having, Crylon supposed, got what he wanted out of the interaction. But then was that not to a degree how most such interactions went? Taking the proferred hand Crylon returned the grip, giving a quick nod.

“And thanks, for showing me way here. Till we meet on another time.”

Once they parted Crylon would head back to the Gem, to return on another day when he was free to consider further the orphanage and possible endeavors there.

Notes
Reading philosophical waxing by a man that speaks like a toddler is hilarious. I appreciate the effort gone into Cry stuttering his point across at his respective language level. Good read.
