Congratulations to Alori!
Keeping with our tradition, the Founders Circle and Regional Storytellers are proud to announce that the Featured Character of the Month for the month of October 2013 is Alori Sai! Alori, once known by another name, is a fiery young Inarta who, after going through one trial after another, was literally given a second chance at life and has flourished ever since. Life hasn't been easy for Alori, but she's always done her best. Let's give Alori and her player a big applause, and the interview you've all been waiting for is right below. Read on! |
The Interview
1. So, first off, congratulations! Lets start with the one everybody likes to hear. What got you into roleplaying? Is Mizahar your first roleplaying experience, or were there others?
Roleplaying is a really good thing for people who like to write. I'm no published author, but I've been writing short and tiny stories since grade school so doing this is perfect for me. There's something about creating stories, characters and the worlds they live in that I've always enjoyed. Weaving an entire story from the imagination is nothing short of magical I would say and being able to do that with like minded people who share those interest is a reward in itself.
My first roleplaying experience wasn't miz, it was a private rpg for fans of a once popular tv show called Dark Shadows. It was a Gothic soap drama that, I'm sure first aired before I was born, but I found it several years ago and became a fan. The site that I rped on was small scale, only about 8 people rping there. So it was nothing like miz at all. But the people there were really into the series and keeping the characters as they should be and I really liked that. The site was also comprised of older people 26-40 year olds and a well behaved bunch. I learned a lot there about rping and really enjoyed the experience.
The site died after another year or so, people got bored, found other things to do, life changes and all that. For a while after I didn't rp at all. I think that was the time of new consoles and I went on a gaming craze for a while. But then I started to want to write again, but instead of looking for another site like the one I had been on before, I decided to try my hand at fantasy rp, medieval style of course. Mizahar was one of the first sites that I saw, and I was shocked at how big it was and how much information there was to read. I read some, but continued to browse for a bit to find the best fit.
In a few days I returned, read more and decided that I wanted to try it here. The whole skills points thing was completely new to me. I knew nothing about skill gaining or any of that. On the other site we just wrote stories and everyone kept their skills, powers within the realm of what the show had given. So this was a very different world to come into, but it was and still is a fun challenge to take.
2. What first drew you to Wind Reach and the Inarta race? Was it the sexy red hair? The big giant eagles? The dangerous volcano? Or something else entirely?
Yes! Those giant eagles were the first thing that got me interested in going to Wind Reach. That's something that you don't see everyday...anywhere. My first thought was a city with people going about their normal lives. There would be shops, merchants and giant birds walking about. The idea made me giddy really. I remember one of my first thoughts was does everyone ride the giant eagles? Then I read about the Inartans and their wonderful city and I just knew I had to start there. There is something to be said about the kind of people crazy enough to live inside an active volcano.
The sexy red hair was another thing that I liked. Like fire burning on snow. They really are a tiny, pale people, heh. I really am addicted to creating things, and just the way my mind works, I go with what comes to my imagination. I didn't just decide that I wanted to make a female character, when I read the lore I just imagined a girl with fiery red hair, trying to make her way in dangerous world and find herself and live her dream. (I wonder if that had anything to do with the fact that most of the pictures on the lore page are of women?)
Wind Reach really is a world inside a far bigger world, and the Inartians seem to view it that way too. I love the idea of the city within the mountain and the culture that the Inartan people have come up with. It's a unique city and that one of a kind gem is always a stand out thing.
3. Okay Alori, if that is your real name, what would you say is Alori's greatest strength, and her greatest weakness?
I would say her greatest strength is her passion and determination. She loves openly and isn't afraid to put herself out there if she thinks it's worth it. She can be a selfish little teen, but she can be just as selfless when others are in danger and is willing to put her life on the line. Her greatest weakness is that she is far too reckless and emotional for her own good. Being a teen girl holds enough emotions and thoughtless actions, add Inartan blood and fire to that and you've got fireworks and a tiny girl with a craving for adventure that never ends.
4. As the previous question implies, Alori isn't Alori's real name, is it? Tell us about the events leading up to what made Alori who she is today, and a little about who she was before?
Aela/Alori has always been an ambitious young woman with her eyes on the horizon. Since her days as a yasi, she had wanted to become an Endal and to fly with the eagles. This ambition only grew as she got older, and she became more frustrated in those coming days when it didn't happen as fast as she had wanted it too. With the Inartans being short on niceties, no one had a problem telling her that they didn't think she was cut out for the role and that it wouldn't happen. Even her mentor at the time, pressed her to continue learning to blow glass since she had displayed a talent in the field and it was her best option for the time.
But Aela didn't want to hear that, she was impatient and she wanted what she wanted, and she wanted it now. So she started to learn to hunt, having already learned to use the bow it was the next step to reaching her goal. Aela was/is a stubborn girl who is ruled by her emotions most of the time. She continued to learn to hunt and wait for that special time to find that right eagle. At one point she thought that she had found one, while she was in the forest running from a huge bear, an eagle came to her rescue.
They got a long easily enough and Alori wanted to make it work, but this time it wasn't meant o be, and for that, she grew even more frustrated, and her goal turned to obsession. Soon after the God of fire, Ivak came to her and opened her eyes to a lot of things as well as destroyed the life that she knew. Aela learned a painful lesson about her ambition and how unhealthy her obsession had become. She was banished from the city and forced to hide in the forest while her hunters pursued her. While most people would have kept going, Aela was too stubborn and proud to ever leave her city.
During her time in the forest, she came to terms with what she had done and started to believe that if she could at least take care of the egg that she stole, her down fall wouldn't be complete. Later Aidara and Sira found her in the forest and a heated showdown took place, but in the end they left her alone figuring one more death was too many already. Aela had also told them that the egg was gone when in truth, she had it hidden in her cave hideout. The right thing to do would have been to return it, but she was sure that they would have killed her if she had.
Sira returned sometime later to check on her, and it was then that she learned that the egg was still alive. As I said before, Aela is stubborn and even then she refused to give the egg back and her obsession had gone completely out of control. She defended the egg with her life and it seemed that the worse was about to happen when the God and Goddess Kelwyn appeared and made her an offer she couldn't refuse. The result was the physical change of Aela into Alori.
With the opportunity at a new life, the girl now Alori had a renewed zest for life and everything in it. Even the small things that dek might take for granted she learned to cherish along with everything else. Even though she got a "get out of jail free card", it still had it's down side. She couldn't tell anyone who she was and Aela had to be dead to the world. I remember talking with another player about this, and they said that being changed in that way would be awesome for their character and that they would love to be someone else. I can understand how that could be a plus for some characters, but not Aela.
She loved who she was, and she loved her life, and the city that she lived in. she just wanted more. It hit her hard once she returned to the city and still does to this day but to a lesser extent. Each day that she gets up, goes out into the city and the people she'd known her whole life, even friends look at her with the eyes of a stranger. It's a constant reminder of her past crimes and a price she pays each day for having her life spared. She carries that guilt on her all the time now, and has decided that she would do all that she can to make up for what she did. She learned a lot about herself and others during all this and she hopes that it will make her a better person.
5. Enough about Alori, I want to hear about her player. What is daily life like for you? Do you have any weird hobbies or quirks I probably shouldn't know about, but demand to hear about anyway? Do you have any strange rituals you perform before sitting down and writing? Lets here about you. Go!
Daily life? Meh, talking about school and all the fun of text books and work can be so boring. Let's skip that shall we? Weird hobbies or quirks? I do have a folder with mood music set for Alori. Music for her happy/fun times, music for those intense scenes, for the sad ones, everything. I don't have a ritual that I always do, sometimes I write when I can and that could be during class, at work, or in the car or home. But when I do, I normally like to sit down with something really sweet like ice cream, cake or even a sweet role. I also grab a strong soda and I'm set! But what I have to try not to do is look up at the tv while I'm writing because something weird is always on and it gets in the way of my writing.
I look up and bam, old woman dancing on teen. WHAT. THE PETCH? Look up again someone is getting punched in the rear with a boxing glove wha? Another glance and a huge trunk tumbles over along with it's bed and about 10 cows roll out onto the middle of the road, get up then just stand there. WOW I can't make this stuff up. A truck full of cows? Really?
6. Back to Alori/Aela. What was she like as a little Yasi running around Wind Reach? What did she do for fun? How has she changed as an adult, besides the obvious new body? What is her favorite childhood memory?
Even as a Yasi Aela was rebellious and always getting into something. She was even involved in a really short "sit-in" with a few other Yasi all in the name of nap time. She also used to sneak out of class because she had learned the time that a certain Endal left each day to hunt and wanted to get another look at his eagle. She was an active little spit fire, always running here and there, always wanting to try everything.
As a Yasi she was really bad at taking any bets from others who said that she couldn't do something. She was also bad about trying to sneak into places where she isn't supposed to be. The story of why she, unlike most in the city carries a long bow, is because as a yasi she was one of the smallest in her class and having a bigger, more powerful bow seemed like a good way to show how strong she was. Alori has since, matured from her childish ways but she still possesses that same drive to prove all the nay sayers wrong.
Her favorite childhood memory would be the first time she saw the Endal mentioned above with his Wind Eagle. There was something striking and powerful about the man and his bird and for a child it was so much more. It was a magical sight for the girl, and her imagination ran wild with the possibilities.
What kid doesn't want to fly right?
7. Next question. If you and Alori were locked in a room together, what would you talk about? What would you do to pass the time? Would you get along, or hate each other?
I hope we would get along XD I do like the gingers. I would have to ask her about the red hair with the blonde high lights, it's a cute look. I'm sure she would want to talk about Wind eagles, music and probably clothing at some point. What would we do? Hmm...Well if someone cued a band I'd like to check out those dance moves she's so popular for pulling off in the dance club. I would also ask her to sing, I've always wondered about the Nari language and when she sings would it sound like a bird sings? That would be crazy though, hearing a loud bird singing and you look outside and instead of seeing a bird in the tree, there's a small woman there.
"Um excuse me miss, but can you keep it down? I'm trying to sleep." And that's when the arrows start to fly.
And yes, I would have to ask her if she knows karate or kung-fu..because you know...pants.
8. If Alori had a million mizas, what would she buy?
I had once thought about having her start her own glassblowing business, or selling something else that could be useful in WR, but that was before the latest turn of events. Not sure if a million is enough for this or not, but she would probably buy a bigger space where she could build an outside club.
Aspiring musicians could come there to play and to learn and concerts would be held at least twice a week! And of course there would be drinks, dancing, and three seasons later...well that is one way to keep the city alive.
9. Are there any characters in particular that have influenced Alori's life, positively or negatively, PC or NPC? Who would you say has had the biggest impact on her, and why?
Aidara was a pretty big influence. She was the first Endal that Aela met personally and after spending the night with her where they braved a viscous Zith attack, she felt a kinship with the woman after they survived and Aidara became a sort of mentor for Aela and she looked to her guidance as a friend and leader to help her through her own trails. They grew closer, saved each other a few times and then that growing relationship was shattered after the events of summer 512 when Aidara turned her back on Aela in the unforgiving, which also aided in her spiraling downfall. I would say that Aidara was a pretty big influence good and bad for Aela.
Sira was another influence on Aela, good and bad. Sira hid the truth about who she was from the Avora and it turned out to make a huge difference when the Aela stole the egg. It put up trust boundaries between the two and there were points when they both wanted to kill the other. It only got worse when Sira tried to take the egg from Aela and a huge talon sword fight broke out. Since then they have both forgiven the other from that whole mess, but there is still a remaining distance between them. Another serious point is that Sira is the only person who knows who Alori really is so...that could mean a few things.
Perith, her former glassblowing mentor was also influential in the days before she was reborn. He did all he could to push her further in the hotshop, even though her eyes remained on the skies. They fought a lot about that and it was him who gave her the gyrfalcon Skye for a make up gift after they had a huge fight. She still stops by the shop to look in on him, but she never says anything.
Lavira is the newest to the group and the only one that has never met Aela. In a way she feels it's a good thing. Not that she could tell anyone about her past anyway, but to know someone that she hadn't known in her old life seems to make the friendship go easier. Alori doesn't feel that Lavira judges her (she might if she knew the truth) unlike certain other Endals whom she was sure had planned to kill her once. It's truly a girl thing, they forgive but they NEVER forget.
10. The floor is yours now. Is there anything you'd like to say? Whatever you want. It doesn't even have to be about Mizahar or this interview. It could just be random gibberish. This is your moment, use it as you see fit.
I've really had a lot of fun rping here. I set out to find a new place to write and I got more than what I could have hoped for. Mizahar has allowed me to write with some amazing people and get to know even more. I may travel to other cities in time, create more characters, but home will always be Wind Reach and with the Inarta that caught my eye so long ago. I was pretty shocked to named featured and thank you to whoever saw this little spitfire to be worth the nomination.
So yea..by this time I'm sure everyone knows that I suck at interviews, sorry about that XD. To all the people of Wind Reach you'll be seeing more of this spunky redhead, she's not going anywhere. And to the rest of you, who knows you might just see her flying to your city soon, she has a Wind Eagle now! |
