Actually forget sashes, I'm agreeing with Brandon here. A ring or earring sounds cool, and is somewhat easily visible when the Shinya are looking for it. The designs of a well made crest crafted by a decent blacksmith would be harder to forge.

But overall, the vibe that I'm getting is:

-Mages w/o identifiers will get punished more severely than ones with them, if they get caught doing something bad.

-Magic, while not necessarily more REGULATED, is more orderly and easily controlled if need be.

-The Houses/Towers are going to play an even bigger role in teh future.

What about magecrafted wizard rings that opens the magecrafted lock of the entrance to the "mage area". Possibly other doors too, in the mage area or in the towers. The owners name can be engraved on the inside of the ring.

The wizard ring would then have three functions
- a valuable key to an exlusive WIP area
- a tower insignia to display their social standing and be proud of
- a possible way to identify rogue mages

In addition, losing the ring for a period of time could be a consequence for wizards who are outed doing something forbidden.

One idea on this theme is gold rings of similar design but with tower specific colors.

Yellow Gold = ? Tower
White Gold = ? Tower
Red Gold = ? Tower

I am quite certain it is a cheaper alternative to magecrafting. Over on Sahova they use golems called Gatekeepers that deny or provide entry. They can also record visits. Now we simply have the golem recognize the "key" (Whatever it may be) and it will open.

There are some kinks to this plan, but I'll just throw the idea out there. We can patch up any holes later.

Glyphs have a one-time use. I don't see how they would work on these sorts of items. Even etched into the metal, once a glyph goes off, it vanishes. That's why glyphs don't work as permanent tattoos either.
