My Dear Sunberthians,
This is the last thing I wanted to do.
Due recent events, particularly the arson attack which I mentioned in an above post, RL has been rather crummy recently. People say that bad things come in threes, but in this instance that rule was broken a few weeks ago. I'll keep the details to myself, partly because I don't want to bore anyone and partly because some of the things I'm referring to don't concern me personally but rather my family and friends. But, suffice to say that some issues have come up and I'm stepping down as AS of Sunberth.
I am sorry about this. When I decided to apply for an AS position, I thought long and hard about the consequences for myself and for you folks, the players. Sunberth is a great domain and it's always attracted some of the greatest writers and characters on the website, in my utterly biased opinion. So for me, the biggest fear over being AS was offering this great gem of a domain to you all and then snatching it away after only a month or so, like a bully who holds a piece of delicious chocolate too high for the other kids to reach it.
But it's now come to a point where I feel my absence and distractibility is starting to make players suffer. That's not right, and in my opinion it's worse than sticking around, even if it means Sunberth might close as a domain. Nobody wants an AS who is clinging on by a thread, capable of ripping away and disappearing at a moment's notice. None of the players of this website deserve that.
I feel I'm starting to ramble now, and I apologise for that. I want to be as candid as possible and let you all know that this decision is A) not an easy one but B) is nevertheless the right thing to do, in my eyes at least.
So, for this next section, I'm going to outline some of the administrative things that will be impacted by my retirement:
- First and foremost, unless someone else becomes AS of Sunberth, the domain will close at the end of the Spring season (which itself will conclude end of May 2016). I heartily urge you all to seriously consider applying for this role, if not immediately then perhaps sometime in the future. Being an AS is hugely rewarding, because you get involved in so many stories and characters that it's almost like having 20 or so PCs yourself. You get the privilege of working with others and thinking of stories that will impact upon all these writers and create new, dynamic settings for them to play in. In short, it's fun. If you like writing, which I presume we all do, it's a blast.
- JOB/WAGE requests: When there's an AS in residence of a domain, these are dealt with by a supervising DS. But when there's not an AS in a domain, I believe outstanding wage requests are sent to the HD. Outstanding job requests are perhaps best PM'd to Nightmare.
- Grading: Like before, I'd urge you all to apply for grader status. Fortunately, we have Konrad who has been picking up the grading slack whilst I've been away, and he is an ultimate hero for doing this. But even heroes need help sometime, and Konrad is no different in this scenario as there'll be nobody to grade his threads. Anyone who has been an active player for 60+ days can apply to be a grader, and like being AS, it's a rewarding experience. You get to read a whole load of stories and you'll probably find that your own writing technique is improved thanks to seeing so many other writing styles.
- IF Sunberth closes at the end of Spring 516AV, all players in the domain will be required to MIGRATE OUT of the domain. This means that you'll have to relocate to another moderated city. Your character will incur no charges or penalties for this (unlike typical IC travel, for example if your PC relocates mid-season, which they would have to pay for). However, you need to let the resident DS of whichever city you migrate into know about your migration, as it needs to be added to your SS thread. Any ongoing threads that are active in SB following it's closure will need to be finished ASAP and NO new threads will be allowed to be created in the closed domain. More information about migration can be found here.
I hope this clarifies most, if not all, of your burning questions about how your PC is effected by my retirement. As someone whose had to migrate a PC out before, my advice is to
be creative, have fun. The immediate panic of 'oh my god my entire PC concept will have to be rewritten/edited' only lasts a moment or so, I promise. Take this as an opportunity to explore another part of your character that you perhaps had not considered before.
Carry on writing, my thugs, criminals and thieves. The world is better for it.
-Dani
PS. If anyone does take up the reigns as AS of Sunberth, I'd suggest taking a peek at my staff plotnotes. In there you'll find all withheld grades (which will save you regrading a thread), and other notes that might help.
