PC of the Month: SIRA This month I had the privilege of interviewing the enthusiastic and witty Sira. As a Wind Eagle Kelvic in Wind Reach, Sira has a great perspective on the Kelvic's hometown and adopted culture. It kinda makes you want to get a box of red hair dye and start commanding the seagulls by your work. Or maybe that was just me... I am envious of how effortless the creation process is for him as well! I hope you enjoy reading the interview as much as I did. 1. How did you come to Mizahar? Well, I used to play on a different site back in high school. It was pretty fun, but not very well organized and nothing like Miz is. But I loved it. Over time though I got bored competing with self-proclaimed god characters and so I kinda left for a while. Then I moved to another state, didn't have Internet for a long time, and a whole bunch of other things but eventually I got the craving again, so I tried to come back to that site. It was easy to explain my absence since technically only half of my character's soul existed in that world, the other half existing in a comatose state back on earth. But let's not get sidetracked by that. I went back to the site only to find it was shutting down in a few days. Left with nowhere to rp, and my old dnd group not talking to one another at the time, I had to find something.. Anything. I tried out many many sites but none were up to my standards. Maybe half a year went by when I finally stumbled upon Mizahar, the Writer's RPG. I don't even remember where I found it, but I was intrigued. I took a look at the lore first and was impressed, but it was the writing that truly kept me here. It was of a quality I had rarely seen on lesser roleplaying websites, and I knew I had to be a part of it. After about a month of reading lore I made my first failure of a character, a loner wolf kelvic. ...then I moved again, lost Internet for a while. When I came back, Sira was born. 2. When did you get your rping start? What did that first foray look like? A long time ago my brother and I, and my friend, used to play a game. The dog house was our time machine/spaceship and took us to many wondrous places. My friend was a scientist, my brother was a caveman, and I was something greatly resembling a Charoda. I regularly had to be submerged in water or I would dry out and die. We had many adventures together across every imaginable world and any point in time.. but all things must come to an end, and my friend moved away. ..that was the start, but perhaps you meant something more like what we are doing now? Well, I discovered my mother's original set of Dungeons and Dragons rulebooks, version one, in junior high and I knew I had found something special. Then I found newer versions of dnd, I found friends to play it with, and quickly became our main dungeon master though being a player was still my preference. My first online roleplaying experience was on Yahoo chat. Looking back it was... horrifying. I started off with two characters. One was an elf. He carried a big sword. And was also a weredragon. ...and the other was a Blastoise. >.> A few months later I discovered the play by post site I mentioned earlier, and now I am here. 3. What do you think makes the difference between a good character and a great one? Aaahhg, I hate this question. I don't know.. I really don't. But if I must answer I would have to say love. Now, I know that sounds cheesy, but if you aren't absolutely head over heels for your character then they are not going to work. You can't write what you don't like. If you have that love of your character then the passion and creativity will follow. The other thing is time. Just because you've got an awesome CS and a big long history that you wrote, it takes time to become great. You need time to learn who your character really is and what they are all about before they can ever become great. ...and that's all I have to say on that. 4. What drew you to your race? Well... I love animals, and the thought of being able to become one is just amazing. I've always been an animal person. Never have I not owned at least one animal. Currently I only have two, my puppy and my bearded dragon. But I've had birds, bugs, snakes, lots and lots of turtles, lizards, dogs, cats, rodents, rocks, and I don't even know what else. So, I wanted to make a kelvic. Originally Sira was just going to be a regular golden eagle kelvic who traveled Mizahar doing random things. I had her all fleshed out, and then I spotted the Inarta. I think they had just been opened for play, that or I had just missed them somehow, and I fell in love. It was a race that loved birds, and I won't lie but it reminded me a little of the movie Avatar. Oh, and did I mention I think redheads are super hot? So I thought about being Inarta. But... the Wind Eagles. I had to try. So I PMed Gossamer and somehow I managed to convince her to let me be a Wind Eagle kelvic. So.. it was my love of animals, birds, and redheads that drew me to making her. Oh, and the awesome Wind Reach culture and all that good stuff. 5. What do you think the modern equivalent to your character would be? Oh wow, that's a tough one. Can I skip it? Please? Pretty please!? Fine.. I'll try. Um.. She'd probably have been a GI Jane of sorts.. Or maybe in law enforcement, or something where she can protect people or whatever. And she'd have a love of adventure, but still be a homebody. So.. I dunno. This question is too hard! 6. How has the setting influenced how you write your character? Well, Sira is a tough one. She has a lot of my personality, but with a lot of Inarta flair to it. For instance, she can be a total bitch to the deks sometimes, but to non-Inarta she is usually pretty friendly because she understands what it's like to be a non-Inarta in Wind Reach. I try to play her as close to what I think she would really act like, taking into account everything from her Inarta upbringing to her kelvic and wind eagle need to bond. She is nothing like the golden eagle Kelvic I first created. She is shy because she is not a true Inarta, proud because she is a wind eagle, and commanding because she is an endal. Everything about her is because of where she is and the people around her. 7. What parts of yourself have you invested into Sira? We are both sarcastic, we are both protectors, and we both love to eat. ^^ Really, she has a lot of tenancies that I have, but a lot that I don't. For instance, Sira has a temper but I never ever get mad. But neither of us hold grudges for long. Sira has a passion for adventure just as I do. She is also bound to her home as I am, something neither of us have any power over. Just as Sira longs for Wind Reach when she is away, I long for my family and friends and cannot long be apart from them. Okay.. Maybe it's Tex Mex I can't live without, but family just sounds better. Truth be told, I don't really think about what of myself I put into my characters, I just write whatever my hands tell me to write. And I'm not that big on over analyzing things. I always hated in school when they would make us dissect a song or poem or something. I'm pretty sure the writer didn't have that in mind when they made it. 8. What kind of character would be the perfect foil to yours? Hmm... Well, um. I believe that question has been answered. Aidara. She once asked me a question, why her and not Sai? Sai was the one who was initially interested in Sira, though Sira had no idea. It was hard to answer, but this is what I came up with. Sira needed someone to protect, but she also needed someone who would nurture her like a cute little puppy dog. She was depressed for so long, or at least unhappy. She needed someone who was a shining light, a bundle of joy. On the outside, Addy was all of those things. But on the inside Addy was just as screwed up, if not more, than Sira was. They helped to heal each other, to bring out the best in one another. Sai, for all that I adore her, was not that character. So, Addy was perfect for Sira. She was everything she needed, and if they had never met I don't know where Sira would be today. 9. Who is someone you've yet to write Sira with, but would really love to? Bah, why can't you ask me an easy question? Again.. I don't know. There are many characters out there that are beautiful but the only way Sira will ever meet them is if they come to her. For me it's more the writer. I fall in love with writers. Addy and all her PCs (the ones I have seen), Aello and hers, Malia, Sai, Irriari. Really, I want to someone to be Sira's villain. Sira needs an arch enemy, and if I ever meet that person, they are who I want to write with. I'd also love to write with one of you lovely founders, but I have no idea who any of your PCs are so I may have done so already. I live a sheltered life, mostly just paying attention to Wind Reach and Ravok.. so I don't know all that many characters out there, and those that I do I have already written with. But really, any character is a character I would love to write with. Come to Wind Reach, shoot me a PM, and I almost guarantee I will want to write with you. 10. What is your biggest challenge in writing Sira? Would you be mad if I said nothing? Of all my characters, Sira is the easiest to write. Rarely so I ask myself, "What would Sira do?" Because I already know the answer to that. My biggest challenge comes with other people.. primarily those who don't play their race or caste right. Or those who don't care about the fact that Sira is what she is. Look.. I don't mean to brag, but Sira is a Wind Eagle kelvic! Her life is the wet dream of every Inarta in Wind Reach! She can fly! As Fois once put it, she is a living ancestor. And don't get me started on the fact that she is technically impossible. The other Inarta should be jealous of her, or in awe of her. Yet so many people just act like they don't care. And that is the hardest part for me. I want you to treat Sira like she's different, because she is! Whether you love or hate her I don't care, but I love it when people actually react to what she is. Anyway... the only other challenge I am facing with her is being pregnant. Not being a woman myself, I really don't know what she's going through. I really don't know what she should be thinking. So the upcoming seasons are going to be very hard for me in that sense. 11. Do you ever have "conversations" with Sira, if so, can you give us a sample? I thought this was supposed to be a rated G interview? 12. What do you think is next for Sira? Well there is the whole baby thing happening. That's kinda a big deal. I've already got a secret player lined up to play the part of the baby as well. Addy and I haven't named it yet, so no cheating because the account hasn't even been made. You will just have to wait and see just like everyone else. Aside from that, once she gets too far along to be flying about doing crazy endal stuff, Sira may spend her "bored on watch duty" time honing her newly discovered jewel crafting skill. So, possibly a side business. Oh, and I would like a Priskil mark eventually. But we are still a bit of for that. Perhaps this Tarot quest will speed things along, but Sira's dedication isn't strong enough to even think about that yet. But one day you will see Sira and Addy flying around defending the mountain from evil spreading hope and courage and healing the weak and injured. Preferably while also going on epic quests and such. 13. Hey Sira, what did you mean when you said she was technically impossible? Well Bina, I'm glad you asked. Because one day I am hoping to convince Goss to do an epic thread around this for me. But of you read the lore, the Kelvic race is a pre-valterian race. And Marcus Kelvic, their creator, was supposed to have died in the valterian. And if you read the Inarta/Wind Eagle lore, the eagles did not come into being until after the valterian. So.. where did Sira come from? If Marcus kelvic died before the Wind Eagles were created, how is it possible for such a kelvic to exist? Sounds like an epic quest to me. I mean, do we even know for sure if he actually died? |
