Shahar's Plotnotes

ImageFinally! Black Forest Chestnut Horses are absolutely ideal models for Seme horses, a horse which I have been trying to find a model since I first started a Drykas PC. Flaxen dark-bodied horses, image wise, are almost always fine-boned and more riding than pulling horses, but black forest chestnuts are draft horses that would make wonderful models. Gonna throw a few pictures up here just 'cuz.

Shahar Dawnwhisper
male Drykas
born 23rd Fall of 492, 23 years of age

may the stars carry your sadness away,

may the flowers fill your heart with beauty,

may hope forever wipe away your tears,

and, above all, may silence make you strong.

... and this is what happened, and this is why the wolf and the caribou are one; for the caribou feeds the wolf, but it is the wolf that keeps the caribou strong.

“He had this wild look about him, like he had just tumbled in from the grasslands. His eyes were all shifty, and it’d make you want to be quiet in case too big a noise frightened him away.”

Though his full height is almost 6’3”, his almost constant tendency to slouch will usually see him standing about 5’10”. He is not a man that likes to stand out, and so he takes pains to remain as far from the spotlight as possible unless absolutely necessary. In fact, to a casual observer he can seem rather timid; Shahar is a cautious soul, perhaps too cautious, would rather go about his business as quickly and quietly as possible, especially in unfamiliar situations or situations that he feels are out of his control. A bit of a strange demeanor to see upon such a strong frame, perhaps, but it is certainly not something Shahar feels compelled to change anytime soon. He dislikes company, and has developed a remarkable ability to get his point across without the need for spoken word. Unless to someone who he considers family or in extremely dire circumstances, it is unlikely that his voice will ever be heard at all. In the rare exceptions to his silence, his voice is deep and a bit rough from misuse, but even then it remains true to the rest of his mannerisms: restrained, quiet and only used when necessary.

He brings with him an air of roughness; his appearance takes up few of his thoughts and is maintained only as far as convenience dictates. His hair is hacked off at his shoulders and tied back if it gets too unruly, his jaw is lined with uneven stubble and he is almost always covered in a thin film of dust. He spares even less effort for what he wears; his clothing is not elaborate by any stretch of the imagination, and in the warmer seasons he prefers to go about shirtless. His skin is tanned, as could be expected, but curious eyes Imagewill be pulled to his hands; his forearms are marred by hundreds of scars, and if examined closely, it is apparent that they were made by claws.

If one were to look at the side of his neck, they might catch sight of the green lines just below and behind his left ear. It is a sweeping mark that is not quite a wing, not quite grass, nor quite wind, but something a little like all of them. It is an almost-bronze type of green, is slightly raised and has Imagejust a hint of a metallic sheen, even when his skin is dirty. This appeared on him in the late days of the summer of 513 a.v, blessed by Cheva to mark his marriage to Khida, and shifted shape in the following year when Rue Nightsong joined them, taking on the name Naiya Dawnwhisper to commemorate the event.

Shahar’s windmarks stretch across almost the entirety of his back, beginning at his pelvis and rising to cling onto both of his shoulders. The tattoo does not depict anything in particular, though an abstract thinker might imagine a stylized bird or face of some sort. Color still deep with freshness, it proves that Shahar has bonded with a Strider and is a proud member of the horseclans.

Shahar’s Phylonura is on his right arm. A crystal clear lake forms above the wrist, a sea of swaying grass growing up around it that changes color with the seasons, turning a rich gold through summer to winter and a brilliant green during the spring. Over his forearm is the twisting, knotted trunk of the Serenity Tree, decorated with life in the form of brightly coloured birds which ruffle their feathers, tree frogs with puffed out throats and slender limbs and multi-coloured snakes winding about the roots. High in the tree’s branches a bird builds her nest, where in spring she will raise chicks that will fledge before summer’s end, one of which will revisit the nest each year to raise a family of their own. In the background on the left, a band of coyotes sings to the moon, and on the right, a pride of Night Lions suns themselves on a hill of rocks. Taking center stage in the tall grass is the burrow of a Spearback, a creature that will seldom reveal himself, but every now and then might peek out of his den.

My face is a mask I order to say nothing
about the fragile feelings hiding in my soul.

a lost past…

He has suffered many wounds in his lifetime, but perhaps the worst of them is the one that cannot be seen. His wounds of the body heal with time. His wounds of the mind do not. Though for all appearances he is a quick, intelligent individual, the twilight within exists like an empty riverbed; silent, still, and steeped in the feeling that something rich and vibrant is supposed to be in its place.

His memories are lost to him.

He knows of nothing before the great djed storm of 512; his first experience was at the bottom of a cliff, battered and bleeding, when out of the night ghosted a great stallion. This was not his first sight of the horse, but, like the rest of what he was, other meetings had been stolen with his past. He dragged himself onto the strider’s back, and together they fled from the cliff, and from spectral images of darkness, pain, and two glowing yellow eyes.

When the storm raged across the world, he and the horse took shelter in a cave, weathering the carnage with other creatures of the grasses. Here his memory fades again, and if he stretches his mind, he can remember traveling through the tunnels, a bloody backpack clutched to his chest.

After what could have been an eternity in the dark, he and the stallion caught sight of a light, and upon discovering a way out of the tunnels they returned to Syna’s warmth.

They had emerged from Semele’s gut to find a crater, one of many strewn about the Sea of Grass. Sheltered from the heat and fed by a generous spring, it was alive with life and protected from predators by the outer walls. Here, he could settle and be safe. Here, he could be at peace.

Spring changed to summer, and as he lived alone he came to encounter a creature that he did not expect: a she-falcon. Though not a stunningly unusual creature, she bore intelligence as keen as her talons, and in her stare was a wisdom far greater than any common bird. He and she were both lone hunters in the endless grasses, and they took to each others’ company for survival; two could kill more than one. Together, they carved a life that was not quite an easy one, but was good nonetheless.

But all things are bound to change, and his life was no different. On the cusp of summer and fall, he came across a creature that was the most foreign he had ever seen: another human. Alien in its similarity to himself, the creature brought him to the stunning realization that he was not the only one of his kind. He followed the stranger to a great city of tents, and he began to unearth that which had been buried; his connection to his people. But as he learned what they were and how they lived, a single question continued to elude him: who was he? He knew how to secure an yvas and speak Pavi, and yet he could not even remember his own name. His identity, whatever it had once been, was gone.

The nameless Drykas followed the great Tent City, neither part of nor separate from it, scraping a living out of the grasslands just as he had before alongside the stallion and she-falcon. The three remained wordless, steadfast companions, and winter turned once again to spring.

It was in this spring, one year after the great Djed storm, that the Drykas journeyed to the Serenity Tree, sacred site of his ancestors, in search of more than what he was. From the tree he came away with an axe, worn and tempered by years unknown, but from the wind and the grass, the rising sun and the hushed rustling of the wild beasts, he came away with something more: a name.

Atop the black bay strider, Endrykas had seen the departure of a man without identity. And upon the strider’s return, it came to know the man named Shahar Dawnwhisper.

Now armed with a title of his own, Shahar claimed residence on the outskirts of Endrykas, somewhere between the Ruby and Topaz districts. Taking up the mantle of a professional hunter, he finally joined the society of the horseclans by feeding those that had no hunters of their own. Though he remained much quieter and more elusive than his loud and fast-paced brethren, he was wholly and undoubtedly Drykas.

She revealed herself to him in the summer of the same year. Though he had seen glimpses of the lean, fierce-eyed stranger on the grasslands in states of half-consciousness, Shahar had always dismissed them as mirages and dreams, at least until the day she stood before him, calmly brushing his horse as if she had done so a hundred times before. Unclothed, unashamed and unyielding in her piercing golden stare, she spoke to him in the common tongue; she was Khida, and he was shocked to find that she was no stranger at all--for Khida was Kelvic, a woman of two skins, and for a year she had known him in grey feathers and talons, hunting and living alongside him. But her eyes remained the same, and Shahar now came to know her in human skin. Their bond had been a long time coming.

Later in the same season, Shahar came to the unexpected defense of a flame-haired woman under attack by two inebriated warriors. The antagonists were subdued and Shahar and the woman parted ways, but not before Shahar learned her name: Rue Nightsong.

As the summer rolled to an end, it brought disaster with it. In a great wave of wings the city of Endrykas was set upon by Zith, and for three days Shahar and Khida fought to survive. When the siege lifted and the carnage was revealed, there was yet another change they were to face: all men of marrying age, in reaction to the hard season behind them, were required to take a wife, or else to face stiff punishment. Khida and Shahar turned to each other, and by the beginning of fall had been blessed with Chevas marks.

The seasons continued on, and Shahar busied himself with carving out a life for himself, his bondmate and his strider, as well as caring for a litter of hunting cats that he come into guardianship of. He became aware of the practice of slavery, both amongst the Drykas and amongst those the Drykas called enemies. He lived, he hunted, he raised his cats, and soon enough fall became winter, and then winter became spring.

It was in the summer of 514 that Shahar once again met the flame-haired woman. In search of new clothes, the hunter had sought out a Ruby pavilion that specialized in such things, as well as the place that coincidentally happened to employ the woman named Rue Nightsong. Soft-spoken and hesitant, Rue was as similar to Shahar as she was different from him; conversation was quiet and heavy with words unspoken, and before he knew it Shahar was in love.

Their courtship was decidedly untraditional and riddled with difficulties; as a low-status member of her pavilion and already facing massive pressure from her family, the two of them met in secret until the onset of winter, when Rue’s activities were discovered by her brother and made clear to her father. Shedding the role of silent outskirter, Shahar stepped forward and formally asked for Rue’s hand in marriage. Her family, glad to be relieved of her, agreed.

On the second day of spring Rue joined Shahar and Khida in marriage. She brought with her a valatia of four zibri, and as she took on Shahar’s last name, so too did she change her first in recognition of her new life. The pavilion, now the new home of Naiya Dawnwhisper, was growing.

Gnosis
Phylonura, Marked

The singularly marked individual is granted the language of Nura and begins to learn to communicate with plants and animals of all sorts. Nura can even cause the witch to actively associate with insects, which are vital forms of life in Caiyha's domain. The witch is granted one biome to look after, and is given often multiple years to hone his or her skills and branch out to invest time and energy in the space she or he protects. The more skills a witch learns and perfects, the more likely he or she will feel the urge to move and resettle, especially when his or her current biome has been in balance for a significantly long period of time. Many witches at this stage can also 'lose' their marks if Caiyha finds them lacking in motivation or determination when it comes to being her guardians of the world.

Snow
Image

Snow
female luvanor grassland hunter
two years of age, born winter 514 (assumed)

Snow came to Shahar in the summer of 515, appearing after Shahar relinquished Hope’s remaining possessions. She follows him, hunts with him and sleeps with him, and becomes uncomfortable when Shahar is out of her sight. Bright, curious and stubbornly optimistic, Snow is willing to face impossible odds that others––even her partner––might see as hopeless. Refusing to abandon her hope even in the darkest of hours, she belongs to Shahar and Shahar belongs to her.

Kyla
Image

Kyla Snowhunt
Drykas woman
19 years of age, born fall 14, 496
10 singing, 10 cooking, 5 riding, 5 storytelling

Kyla Snowhunt is a Drykas, and one of the last living connections Shahar has to his home and people. Like him, she was captured by pirates on the western coast of Cyphrus and taken away, with the intended purpose of being sold as slaves to the highest bidder. Upon landing on the shores of Falyndar, Kyla and Shahar both managed to escape, along with her young son, Kai. The hardships she has faced have taken their toll on her; while she was once optimistic and kind, Kyla's experience have made her much more bitter and opportunistic. She trusts no one save Shahar, realizing that she and her son would undoubtedly be dead without his support, and there is even some warped, distant affection there for the simple fact that he and her son are the only two Drykas she will likely ever meet until they find their way home.

Kai
Image

Kai Snowhunt
Drykas boy
5 years of age, born summer 74, 510
10 riding (horse), 10 brawling, 10 animal husbandry

Like his mother, Kai was taken by pirates in the winter of 515. Through sheer luck and tenacity, the two were not separated from each other, and managed to escape with Shahar Dawnwhisper upon arriving in Falyndar. And like his mother, Kai's experience with slavery has not left him unscathed; Kai hates to be touched by anyone but his mother, and will bite and kick anyone who tries. He doesn't like being trapped and he doesn't like being bossed around; both of these will be met with anger and belligerency, and even violence if it doesn't stop. The only exceptions to this are given to animals; Kai has a way with four-legged creatures and is much more tolerant of them than of people. Despite his fear of contact, Kai is still a relatively curious and invested in his own survival. He can even be well-mannered, provided someone is deemed worthy of it. He yearns for other children to play with, but the difference in experience, culture and language often leaves him annoyed and frustrated with them; in the place of other youth, Kai is quite attached to Snow, and isn't above seeking out Shahar himself for interaction if he's feeling particularly lonely.

Name: Khida
Race: Kelvic, peregrine falcon
Gender: female
Relationship: bondmate and wife
character sheet

Khida found Shahar in the spring of 512, living in the middle of the Sea of Grass. Since she, also, seemed to be in the middle of the Sea of Grass, they began to work together for survival. As time passed, however, more than cold convenience bound them; real trust began to develop. She followed him when he returned to Endrykas, and she helped him retain his sanity while he readjusted to civilization. He is as close to her as he is to his strider; indeed, it is difficult for him to remember a time when she has not been there. Which might eventually lead one to wonder just how he managed to travel around for so long without figuring out that she's a Kelvic...

It was in the summer of 513, however, that the truth about Khida's nature was illuminated, and that she and Shahar finally bonded.

Gender: female
Relationship: wife
character sheet

Rue Nightsong and Shahar met on a dark night of the summer of 513, when he came to her defense against a pair of intoxicated Drykas men. Precisely a year later, the two reconnected and fell in love almost immediately. After a brief courtship in secret, followed by difficulty and disapproval from her family, Shahar asked for Rue's hand in marriage. Her family agreed, and Rue took on the name Naiya Dawnwhisper in recognition of her new life. She is now a treasured part of the Dawnwhisper pavilion.

Shahar's Plotnotes

ImageThis is my language tracking thread, where I'll do my best to keep tabs on what words Shahar learns and when. This will probably be moved somewhere else once I get my plotnotes good and organized, but this is goon enough to just store the info until then.

Shahar's Plotnotes

Season Overview

Winter 515 a.v.

The winter of 515 shatters Shahar’s previous existence, for both better and for worse. After being marked by Caiyha, Shahar is blessed with the powers and responsibilities of a Witch. Unfortunately, his time to explore his new abilities is cut short by a massive fleet of pirates that lay siege to Endrykas, enslaving many of its citizens. Shahar is amongst the taken, eventually ending up on the shores of Falyndar and making his way to Taloba.

This season is going to be a huge challenge. Shahar is going to find himself pitted against many unfamiliar trials and situations, although they come alongside with roleplay opportunities he would otherwise not have. Combat development is a large one, and will be a major theme skill-wise; Shahar will almost certainly lose his javelins and other weaponry, and I’d like to use this to force him into learning a weapon he has never handled before to get back on his feet. A ranged weapon would be preferable, something common in Taloba and the jungle in general, although he’ll definitely want to get more than one method of defense as soon as he can.

Since he’s amongst Myrians, another skill I would like to focus on is intimidation and melee combat. He’s foreigner, a ‘barbarian,’ and the situation will force him to put himself out there in the greater society. He needs to make money, not just to support his new NPCs but also to equip them all to journey outside of Falyndar.

On the topic of journeying, he will likely have to gain a lot of lores in the short amount of time he’s in Taloba, mostly regarding the lay of the land. He’ll be focused on getting home, but doesn’t yet know just how monumental of a journey is now before him; all he needs to know by the end of the season is that there’s a city called Kalinor, and they trade, and they know different cities he can get to. Therefore, his first priority is going to be getting to Kalinor.

Series Of Events

Seasonal Calendar

2nd - The city arrives at the winter grounds and sets up for a hard winter.

3rd - The celebration of 'The First Frost' is held with many gathering to eat, drink, and share stories well into the night.

4th - Spearback, also known to locals as ‘Scout’s Bane’ attack a campsite on the outskirts of the city killing all bar two of the pavilion members residing there. No one knows what caused these animals to leave their winter dens and people become concerned that these attacks might happen again. [Shahar's Challenge]

5th - People everywhere weatherproof their tents and collect what little firewood there is to be found.

7th - The River Flower sees a few people with mild concussions from slipping on the ice further north of the city.

8th - A boy is taken by wolves. Hunters go out to take down the troublesome pack.

10th - People who failed to prepare for the winter start fighting over dried food stocks and some wake to find their own rations raided.

12th - The Watch leads a large group of Drykas who don’t think they will survive winter part way to Riverfall.

13th - The first case of the flu for the season is reported at The River Flower.

15th - The brave go out to forage for what they can.

17th - Good fishing to be done on the coast for those with rods, the water, however, is too rough to consider taking any small boats out.

18th - A man and his two sons are washed out to sea while fishing off the rocks.

19th - Zibri wool sales are up but few are willing to shear their stock in fear that the winter will be too cold for the animals to survive without their wool.

21st - Hunters spot rabbits out on the Sea of Grass.
23rd - Two hunters on horseback go missing; the wife of one of the men explains that her husband was carrying a large amount of gold miza on him.

25th - The moon is extra bright tonight, keeping some awake. At Namak Springs, one of the pools glows a strange purple colour and those who dare to enter its waters find themselves in an alternative reality. [Moderated Event with Guest Storyteller]

27th - The northern part of Star Lake starts to freeze over.

31st - The northern lakes near Endrykas are completely frozen over.

33rd - A fleet of black ships anchor across the coast. Before the 5th bell the men from these ships manage to round up and steal approximately 300 Zibri, 50 Striders, 600 Drykas men, 180 women, and 40 children, and a large part of the winter food stores. Most of the adults were skilled doctors, hunters, labourers, watchmen etc, leaving behind loved ones that will struggle or even pass this winter due to their absence. No one knows where the pirates have come from or where they’re heading too. Not only is the city devastated by the loss of these people, but also by the deaths of almost 400 warriors who lost their lives trying to stop the pirates, including a handful of high ranking Drykas watchmen and women, clan officials, and old teachers. [Super Moderated Event]

45th - Shahar escapes the pirates on the shores of Falyndar, along with a Drykas woman and her young son.

49th - Shahar and co. set out for Taloba.

63rd - Shahar and co. arrive in Taloba.

65th - Children are delighted as the night erupts into fireflies, and the younger crowd of Taloba rejoices in chasing them around into the wee hours of the night.

73rd - An Okapi hunt is held, the group formed from several clans.

88th - A brief but vicious monsoon hits the city, destroying several of the murals, strangely the Blackened Claws image remains largely undamaged.

92nd - End of Winter. Shahar and co. leave Taloba.
